Where to go for unemployment benefits - Washington ESD office locations vs online?

I just got laid off from my construction job and need to file for unemployment benefits but I'm not sure where to go for unemployment benefits. Do I need to visit a Washington ESD office in person or can I do everything online? I've never filed for UI before and I'm pretty confused about the whole process. My former employer said something about filing weekly claims but I don't even know where to start. Any help would be appreciated!

You can file your entire unemployment claim online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. No need to visit an office in person unless you have a really complicated situation. Just create an account and follow the prompts to file your initial claim.

Thanks! Do I need to bring any documents or paperwork when I file online?

You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names and addresses. Have your pay stubs handy too.

I tried filing online last month and kept getting error messages. Ended up having to call Washington ESD but could never get through. The phone lines are always busy.

The online system works fine most of the time. You probably had a browser issue or were trying during peak hours. Clear your cache and try again.

I tried different browsers and times of day. Still couldn't get past the employment verification page.

If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about filing, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me get through to an actual agent. They have this video demo (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ) that shows how it works. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

Never heard of that service. Is it legit or some kind of scam?

It's totally legitimate. They just help you get connected to Washington ESD agents when the phone lines are swamped. Saved me so much time and frustration.

I might need to try that if I can't figure out the online filing. Thanks for the tip!

DO NOT GO TO THE OFFICES! They're mostly closed to walk-ins anyway. Everything is online now or by phone. I learned this the hard way when I drove 45 minutes to the Seattle office only to be told I had to file online.

Good to know! I was thinking about driving to the Tacoma office but I'll skip that now.

Some offices do limited in-person appointments but you have to schedule ahead. Definitely call first.

The Washington ESD website has a really good step-by-step guide for first-time filers. Start there and you'll be fine. Make sure you file your weekly claims every week after your initial claim is processed or you won't get paid for those weeks.

0 coins

How long does it usually take for the initial claim to get processed?

0 coins

NebulaNinja

•

Usually 1-2 weeks if there are no issues. Sometimes longer if they need to verify your employment or if it goes into adjudication.

Mine took 6 weeks because of some adjudication issue I still don't understand. The system is so slow.

Also make sure you register with WorkSource Washington for the job search requirements. You can't just sit at home collecting checks - you have to be actively looking for work and document it.

How many jobs do I need to apply for each week?

I think it's 3 job contacts per week but check the current requirements on the Washington ESD site. They change the rules sometimes.

been through this whole process twice now. first time was a nightmare trying to reach anyone at washington esd. second time i used that claimyr thing someone mentioned and got through right away. wish i'd known about it the first time around

What kind of questions did you need to ask them that you couldn't figure out online?

0 coins

had some weird issue with my previous employer disputing my claim. needed to talk to someone who could explain what documents i needed for the appeal

The whole system is just designed to make it as hard as possible to get benefits. They hope you'll give up and go away. Don't let them discourage you - you paid into this system and you deserve the benefits.

It's really not that complicated if you just follow the instructions. Most people make it harder than it needs to be.

0 coins

Easy for you to say. Try dealing with it when you have a complex employment situation or when they randomly decide to audit your claim.

Make sure you keep all your records organized from day one. Save every email, document every phone call, keep copies of all your job applications. If something goes wrong later you'll need all that documentation.

That's really good advice. I'll start a folder right now to keep everything organized.

Also screenshot everything important on the website. I've had things disappear from my account before.

Quick question - does anyone know if you can file for unemployment benefits if you were working part-time? I was only working 25 hours a week before I got laid off.

NebulaNinja

•

Yes, you can still qualify for unemployment benefits even if you were part-time. It depends on your total earnings over the base period, not just your most recent job.

Thanks! I was worried I wouldn't qualify because it wasn't full-time work.

One thing nobody mentioned - if you're in a union, check with them first. Sometimes they have specific procedures or can help you navigate the Washington ESD system. My union rep knew exactly what forms I needed.

I'm not in a union but that's good advice for others who might be reading this.

Just want to add that if you get stuck anywhere in the process, that Claimyr service really does work. I was skeptical at first but when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD for over a week, I tried it and got connected within minutes. Worth checking out their demo video if you're curious.

How much does it cost though? Is it worth paying for when you're already unemployed?

I found it worth it considering how much time it saved me. Plus getting your claim resolved faster means you get your benefits sooner.

The most important thing is to file as soon as possible after you lose your job. There's a waiting week but you can't get benefits for weeks you don't file for, even if you file later.

0 coins

Good point. I'll file today then. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice!

0 coins

Yep, don't wait. I made that mistake and lost out on a week of benefits because I thought I had more time.

Also remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them when you file your tax return next year. Just something to keep in mind for planning purposes.

0 coins

I hadn't thought about the tax implications. Thanks for mentioning that.

The Washington ESD mobile app is pretty decent too if you prefer using your phone. Makes it easier to file your weekly claims when you're on the go.

I didn't know they had an app. Is it available for both iPhone and Android?

0 coins

Yes, it's in both app stores. Just search for Washington ESD.

Last tip - set up direct deposit right away when you file your claim. Paper checks take forever and can get lost in the mail. Electronic payments are much more reliable.

0 coins

Definitely will do that. I need the money to come as quickly as possible.

Direct deposit usually takes 1-2 business days once your payment is processed. Much better than waiting for a check.
