Where to sign up for Washington ESD unemployment benefits - need help finding the right place
I just got laid off from my construction job last week and I'm trying to figure out where exactly I need to go to sign up for unemployment benefits in Washington. I've been working for the same company for 3 years but this is my first time needing to file for unemployment. I see there's the Washington ESD website but I'm not sure if I need to go somewhere in person or if I can do everything online. Does anyone know the process? I'm worried about missing deadlines or doing something wrong that could mess up my claim.

You can file your initial claim completely online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. There's no need to go anywhere in person unless there are specific issues with your claim. The online system is actually preferred and works 24/7. Just make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment information for the last 18 months ready.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or just the company names and dates? I have most of my recent pay stubs but not sure about older ones.

•Company names, addresses, dates of employment, and your gross wages are what you need. Pay stubs help but aren't required for filing. Washington ESD will verify your wages through employer reports.

Make sure you file your claim right away! You want to file for the week you became unemployed, not when you get around to it. I waited a few weeks when I got laid off and lost out on those benefits because you can't backdate claims in most cases.

•Oh no, I was laid off last Wednesday. Is it too late to file for that week?

•No you should be fine! File today and make sure to claim benefits for the week starting when you were laid off. The system will walk you through it.

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD when I needed help with my claim. The phone lines are always busy and I spent hours trying to reach someone. If you run into issues and need to talk to someone, I recently found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that actually gets you through to ESD agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•Is that legit? I've never heard of paying someone to help you call a government office.

•Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They don't handle your claim or anything, just help you get through to the right person at ESD when you need to talk to someone.

The whole process is online now. Go to esd.wa.gov and look for 'file a new claim' or something like that. took me about 30 minutes to complete when i did it last year after my restaurant closed

One important thing - when you file your claim, you'll create an account on SecureAccess Washington (SAW) if you don't already have one. That's the login system Washington ESD uses. Write down your username and password because you'll need to log in every week to file your weekly claim and check your claim status.

•Weekly claim? I thought once you filed you just get the money automatically.

•No, you have to file a weekly claim every week to certify that you're still unemployed and looking for work. It's usually just a few questions but you have to do it every week to get paid.

•And make sure you do your job search activities! Washington ESD requires 3 job search contacts per week and you have to log them in WorkSourceWA.

UGH the Washington ESD system is so confusing! I filed my claim 2 months ago and it's STILL in adjudication. Nobody can tell me what's wrong or how long it will take. The automated system just keeps saying 'your claim is being reviewed' over and over.

•That's awful! Have you tried calling? I know the wait times are terrible but sometimes they can at least tell you what the hold up is.

•I've called probably 50 times and either get disconnected or they tell me to wait for a letter. It's been 8 weeks!

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. When my claim got stuck they helped me get through to someone who could actually look at my file and explain what was happening.

For anyone reading this, the key things you need to know: 1) File online at esd.wa.gov 2) File immediately, don't wait 3) You'll need employment info for last 18 months 4) Create your SecureAccess Washington account 5) File weekly claims every week 6) Do your job searches and log them. That covers the basics.

•This is super helpful, thank you! One more question - how long does it usually take to get your first payment?

Leslie Parker
•If everything goes smoothly, usually 2-3 weeks from when you file. There's a one week waiting period, then processing time. But if your claim goes into adjudication it can take much longer.

Just want to add that if you worked in construction like the OP, make sure you report ALL your employers from the last 18 months, including any short-term jobs or side work. Sometimes construction workers forget about smaller jobs but Washington ESD needs a complete work history.

•Good point! I did some weekend work for a different contractor a few months ago. Do I need exact dates for that?

Sergio Neal
•As close as you can get. Month and year is usually sufficient if you can't remember exact start/end dates for short-term work.

•Actually WorkSource can help you file your claim if you need assistance with the computer stuff, but you're right that it's not required.

I'm going through this process right now too after getting laid off from my office job. The online filing was pretty straightforward but I'm nervous about the weekly claims. Do they really check if you did your job searches?

Alice Pierce
•They can audit your job search log at any time, so yes, you need to do legitimate job searches and keep good records. Don't risk your benefits by faking it.

•Thanks for the warning! I'll make sure to do real searches and document everything properly.

Pro tip: when you file your claim, you can choose direct deposit or they'll send you a debit card. Direct deposit is faster and more reliable in my experience. The debit cards sometimes have issues or get delayed in the mail.

•How do you set up direct deposit during the filing process?

•There's a section where you enter your bank account and routing number. Just have your bank info ready when you file.

One thing that caught me off guard - after you file your initial claim, Washington ESD sends a bunch of paperwork in the mail. Don't panic when you get multiple letters. Some are just informational, others might require you to send additional documentation. Read everything carefully.

•Yes! And if they ask for additional information, respond quickly. Delays in sending back required documents can hold up your whole claim.

•Good to know. I'll watch for the mail and respond to anything right away.

I used Claimyr when I couldn't figure out why my weekly claims weren't being processed. Turns out there was a system glitch that required an agent to manually fix it. Would have taken me weeks to get through on my own but Claimyr got me connected in a few hours.

•How much does something like that cost?

•I'd rather not get into specific costs on here, but for me it was worth it to get my benefits flowing again. Check their site for current pricing.

The most important thing is just to get started. Don't overthink it. The Washington ESD website walks you through everything step by step. I was so worried about messing something up but it was actually pretty user-friendly.

I need a extension on my unemployment
0 coins
Mateo Silva
@Bruce Jones - Unfortunately, Washington state doesn't have automatic extensions like some other states do. Your regular unemployment benefits are limited to 26 weeks maximum. However, there are sometimes federal extension programs during economic downturns or emergencies. I'd recommend calling Washington ESD directly to ask about any current extension programs, or check their website at esd.wa.gov for updates. You might also want to look into other assistance programs like SNAP or local food banks while you continue your job search.
