How do you file for unemployment with Washington ESD - first time filing

I just got laid off from my construction job yesterday and I've never filed for unemployment before. I know I need to go through Washington ESD but I'm completely lost on where to start. Do I just go to their website? What information do I need to have ready? I've been working for the same company for 3 years so I should qualify, but I have no idea what the actual process looks like. Any help would be appreciated!

You'll need to file online at esd.wa.gov. Start by creating an account on SecureAccess Washington (SAW) if you don't have one. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history from the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. Also have your bank account info ready for direct deposit.

Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic employment info?

0 coins

Just the basic info to start. They might ask for pay stubs later if there are any issues with your claim.

0 coins

Make sure you file ASAP! There's a waiting week but the sooner you file the better. I waited like 2 weeks after I got fired and it delayed everything.

0 coins

Good point - I'll do it today. Is there a specific time of day that's better to avoid crashes?

0 coins

Early morning or late evening usually works better. Avoid lunch time and right after work hours when everyone's trying to file.

If you run into issues getting through to Washington ESD by phone (which happens a lot), there's a service called Claimyr that helps people reach ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really helpful when you need to talk to someone about your claim status.

0 coins

Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to get through to ESD.

0 coins

Yeah it's real. I used it when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

0 coins

I've heard good things about Claimyr too. My sister used it last month when she had issues with her weekly claims.

Construction workers sometimes have special considerations because of seasonal work patterns. Make sure you report all your employers from the last 18 months, even short-term jobs. Washington ESD looks at all your wages to determine your benefit amount.

0 coins

I did work a side job for about 2 months last summer. Should I include that even though it was only part-time?

0 coins

Absolutely! Include everything. They'll calculate your benefits based on all reported wages.

0 coins

ugh the ESD website is such a pain to navigate. took me forever to figure out where to actually start the application. once you're in the system though its not too bad

0 coins

Any tips on navigating it? I'm not great with websites.

0 coins

Look for 'Apply for Benefits' on the main page. It's usually the most prominent button. Don't get confused by all the other links.

0 coins

After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Don't forget about that part - it's easy to miss and then you lose payments.

0 coins

How do I know when to file the weekly claims? Do they send reminders?

0 coins

You can set up email reminders in your account. I think it's usually every Sunday but check your account for your specific schedule.

0 coins

Yeah don't rely on just remembering. Set phone reminders or whatever works for you.

0 coins

One thing nobody tells you is that if you get laid off due to lack of work (which sounds like your situation), that's usually considered a qualifying separation. If you quit or got fired for misconduct, it's more complicated.

0 coins

Yeah it was definitely a layoff - they ran out of projects. Should be straightforward then.

0 coins

Perfect, that makes the process much easier. Your claim should go through without issues.

0 coins

BE CAREFUL about the job search requirements! You have to actively look for work and keep a log. Washington ESD can audit you and if you don't have proper documentation, you could owe back all the benefits.

0 coins

How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?

0 coins

I think it's 3 job search activities per week minimum. Check the requirements in your account after you file.

0 coins

Yeah and keep detailed records! Date, company name, how you applied, everything. I keep a spreadsheet.

0 coins

Expect your first payment to take 2-3 weeks if everything goes smoothly. There's a waiting week plus processing time. Don't panic if it seems slow at first.

0 coins

Good to know - I was worried about how quickly I'd get money coming in.

0 coins

If there are any issues with your claim, it could take longer. That's when services like Claimyr become really helpful for getting answers.

0 coins

Make sure your address is correct in the system! I had mail going to an old address and missed important notices about my claim. Caused a huge headache.

0 coins

Thanks for the heads up. I'll double-check everything before submitting.

0 coins

Also set up direct deposit if you can. Paper checks take forever and can get lost in the mail. Much easier to just have it go straight to your bank account.

0 coins

Definitely will do direct deposit. Do they need a voided check or just account numbers?

0 coins

Just your routing and account numbers. You can find those on any check or ask your bank.

0 coins

If your claim goes into adjudication for any reason, don't freak out. It's pretty common but can take weeks to resolve. That's another situation where calling ESD becomes important, and again, Claimyr can help you actually get through to talk to someone.

0 coins

What causes adjudication? Want to avoid that if possible.

0 coins

Could be anything - conflicting information, employer disputes, identity verification. Sometimes it's random. Just respond quickly to any requests for information.

0 coins

Keep copies of everything! Screenshot your application, save confirmation numbers, print important documents. The system can be glitchy and you want proof of what you submitted.

0 coins

Smart idea. I'll make sure to document everything as I go through the process.

0 coins

honestly the whole system is frustrating but once you get the hang of it its not terrible. just be patient and dont expect it to work perfectly the first time

0 coins

Appreciate the realistic expectations. I'll try to stay patient with the process.

0 coins

One last tip - read everything carefully before clicking submit. I made a typo in my SSN and it caused weeks of delays while they sorted it out.

0 coins

Yikes, definitely will double-check all the numbers. Thanks for all the help everyone!

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! The initial filing is actually the easy part - it's the weekly maintenance and job search stuff that trips people up later.

0 coins

I'll make sure to stay on top of the weekly filings. This thread has been super helpful!

0 coins

Just remember - Washington ESD processes thousands of claims, so some delays are normal. Don't stress too much if it takes a couple weeks to get your first payment. Focus on your job search and stay on top of your weekly claims.

0 coins

Will do. Thanks again everyone for walking me through this!

Construction work can be unpredictable - you might end up needing unemployment again in the future. Now that you know the process, it'll be much easier next time.

0 coins

True, hopefully I won't need it again anytime soon but good to know the process now.

0 coins

Welcome to the unemployment club! It sucks but at least WA has decent benefits compared to some states. You should be fine if you follow all the advice in this thread.

0 coins

Thanks! Feeling much more confident about the process now.

0 coins

Final reminder about Claimyr - keep their info handy in case you run into issues later. Much better than spending hours on hold with ESD. The peace of mind is worth it when you need to actually talk to someone about your claim.

0 coins

Bookmarked their site just in case. Hopefully won't need it but good to have as backup.
