How to draw unemployment benefits in Washington - complete filing process?
I just got laid off from my retail job last week and I'm totally lost on how to draw unemployment benefits through Washington ESD. I've never filed for UI before and I'm not sure where to even start. Do I need to go somewhere in person or can I do everything online? What documents do I need to have ready? I keep seeing references to weekly claims but I don't understand what that means. Can someone walk me through the whole process step by step?

Everything is done online now through Washington ESD's website. You'll need to create an account first, then file your initial application. Make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. The weekly claims are something you file every week to certify you're still unemployed and looking for work.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or will they verify my wages some other way?

Liam McConnell
•Washington ESD gets your wage information directly from employers, but having your pay stubs handy can help if there are any discrepancies.

The online system can be confusing at first. You'll file your initial claim, then wait for them to process it. They'll send you information about your weekly benefit amount and when to start filing weekly claims. Just be patient because it can take 2-3 weeks to get your first payment.

•2-3 weeks?! I need to pay rent next week. Is there any way to speed this up?

•Unfortunately no, that's just how long the processing takes. Make sure you file weekly claims on time even if your initial claim is still pending.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD on the phone to ask questions, I discovered this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call on my own.

•Is that legitimate? I'm worried about giving my info to third parties.

•Yeah it's legit, they just help you get through the phone queue. You still talk directly to Washington ESD agents, not them.

•I used Claimyr too when I couldn't reach anyone about my adjudication issue. It definitely works.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements! You need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. They can audit this at any time and if you don't have proper documentation you could lose benefits.

•What counts as a job search contact? Just applying online or do I need to do more?

•Applying for jobs, contacting employers directly, attending job fairs, networking activities. Keep detailed records with dates, company names, and contact methods.

ugh the whole system is so confusing, took me forever to figure out what adjudication meant when my claim got stuck

Mei Zhang
•What's adjudication? Should I be worried about that?

Liam McConnell
•Adjudication is when they need to investigate something about your claim before approving benefits. Not everyone goes through it, usually happens if there are questions about why you left your job.

The most important thing is to file your weekly claims EVERY week even if you haven't been approved yet. Missing a week can cause delays in your payments. You have to certify that you're able to work, available for work, and actively seeking work.

•When do I file the weekly claims? Is there a specific day?

•You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. I always do mine on Sunday morning to get it out of the way.

Don't forget you might have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits. They'll ask if you want taxes withheld when you file.

Mei Zhang
•Should I have taxes taken out or pay later?

Dmitry Petrov
•I'd recommend having them take taxes out. Otherwise you might owe a lot come tax time.

just went through this whole process myself last month after getting fired, it's not as scary as it seems once you get started

•How long did it take you to get your first payment?

•about 3 weeks total from when I first applied to when money hit my account

Make sure you report ANY income you earn while collecting unemployment, even small amounts. They'll find out eventually and you'll have to pay it back if you don't report it.

•What if I do some gig work like DoorDash while collecting?

Ava Martinez
•You have to report all earnings. They'll reduce your weekly benefit based on how much you earn, but you won't lose benefits entirely unless you earn more than your weekly benefit amount.

The Washington ESD website has a pretty good guide that walks through everything step by step. Start there before calling because the phone lines are usually swamped.

•I looked at their website but it's so much information, I got overwhelmed.

Miguel Castro
•Yeah it can be a lot. Focus on just the initial claim filing section first, then worry about the other stuff later.

If your claim gets denied for any reason, you have 30 days to appeal. Don't just accept it if you think they made a mistake.

Mei Zhang
•Why would a claim get denied?
0 coins
Zainab Abdulrahman
•Common reasons are if they think you quit voluntarily, were fired for misconduct, or don't meet the wage requirements. Most can be appealed if you have documentation.

I remember being so stressed about this whole process when I first had to file. The key is just taking it one step at a time and not getting overwhelmed by all the information.

Mei Zhang
•That's exactly how I'm feeling right now. Thanks for the encouragement.

•You got this! The hardest part is just getting started. Once you file that initial claim, the rest follows a routine.

Pro tip: screenshot everything when you're filing claims online. The system sometimes glitches and you'll want proof you submitted on time.

Mei Zhang
•Good thinking, I'll definitely do that.

Yara Elias
•Yeah learned that lesson the hard way when their system crashed right after I submitted and I had no way to prove it.

depending on your industry you might be able to get standby status instead of regular UI if your employer expects to call you back within a few weeks
0 coins
Mei Zhang
•What's standby status? My manager said they might call me back when business picks up.
0 coins
Liam McConnell
•Standby means you don't have to look for work because you're expected to return to your job. But it has to be approved by Washington ESD and your employer has to verify the callback date.

The waiting week thing caught me off guard - you don't get paid for your first week of unemployment even though you file a claim for it.
0 coins
Mei Zhang
•Wait, what? So I won't get paid for the first week at all?
0 coins
Keisha Jackson
•Correct, the first week is a waiting period. You'll get paid starting from the second week if your claim is approved.

Washington ESD fraud prevention is pretty strict these days so make sure all your information is accurate. Double check everything before submitting.

•What happens if I make a mistake on my application?

Paolo Moretti
•Small mistakes can usually be corrected, but major discrepancies might trigger an investigation. Just be as accurate as possible from the start.

If you can't get through on the phone and need help, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but it got me connected when I'd been trying for days.
0 coins
Mei Zhang
•How much does it cost?
0 coins
Amina Diop
•I don't remember the exact price but it was worth it to actually talk to someone instead of hanging up on busy signals all day.

Remember that you can work part-time while collecting unemployment, but your benefits will be reduced dollar for dollar after the first $5 you earn each week.
0 coins
Mei Zhang
•So if I earn $100 in a week, they'd take $95 off my unemployment?
0 coins
Oliver Weber
•Exactly. So you'd get your full weekly benefit amount minus $95. Sometimes it's still worth it depending on how much you earn.

The whole process seems intimidating but honestly once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims it becomes second nature.

One last thing - if you have direct deposit set up it'll get your payments faster than waiting for a debit card to arrive in the mail.
0 coins
Mei Zhang
•I'll make sure to set that up when I file. Thanks for thinking of that detail!

CosmicCaptain
•And if you need to call Washington ESD about setting up direct deposit or anything else, remember Claimyr can help you actually get through to talk to someone.
