First time filing - how to claim unemployment benefits through Washington ESD?
Just got laid off from my retail job after 2 years and I've never had to file for unemployment before. I'm completely lost on how to claim unemployment benefits and where to even start. I know I need to go through Washington ESD but their website is confusing and I don't want to mess anything up. Can someone walk me through the basic steps? Do I need to file right away or can I wait a few days? Also heard something about weekly claims but not sure what that means. Any help would be appreciated!

You'll want to file your initial claim as soon as possible since there's usually a waiting week. Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'File a Claim' section. You'll need your SSN, employment history for the last 18 months, and your reason for separation. The process takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your info ready.

•Thank you! Should I gather pay stubs before I start or will they ask for those later?

•They might ask for pay stubs during adjudication if there are questions about your wages, but you don't need them to file the initial claim. Just have your employer info and dates of employment ready.

The weekly claims part means once your initial claim is processed, you have to file a weekly claim every week to actually get paid. It's basically reporting that you're still unemployed and looking for work. You can do it online or by phone but online is way easier.

•How often do I need to do the weekly claims? Every Sunday?

Isabella Silva
•You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. Most people do it Sunday or Monday. Just don't miss the deadline or you won't get paid for that week.

One thing that really helped me when I was trying to get through to Washington ESD about my claim status was using Claimyr. It's this service that helps you actually reach a real person at ESD when the phone lines are always busy. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at ESD.

•Yeah I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They basically keep calling for you until they get through to an agent. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Might need to try that if I run into issues. The phone thing sounds like a nightmare.

Make sure you're really eligible before filing. You need to have worked enough hours and earned enough wages in your base period. If you quit your job or got fired for misconduct, you might not qualify. Washington ESD will review your separation reason during adjudication.

•I was laid off due to store closure, not fired or anything. Should be okay right?

•Layoffs due to lack of work are usually approved. You should be fine as long as you meet the wage requirements.

ugh the whole system is such a mess. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because they kept asking for more documentation. be prepared to wait forever

Emma Taylor
•6 weeks?? That's crazy. Did you eventually get all the back pay?

Omar Fawzi
•yeah eventually but bills don't wait. just saying don't count on getting money right away

Don't let that scare you - most claims go through fine if you provide complete and accurate information upfront. The key is being thorough on your initial application and responding quickly to any requests for additional info.

•This is good advice. I had my claim approved in about 10 days because I made sure everything was accurate.

•That makes me feel better. I'll make sure to double check everything before submitting.

Also remember you have to actively look for work and keep a record of your job search activities. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search activities per week once your claim is approved. This includes applying for jobs, networking, attending job fairs, etc.

•Do I need to prove this somehow or just keep my own records?

•Keep detailed records because they can audit your job search at any time. Use their online job search log or keep your own spreadsheet with dates, employers, and activities.

•WorkSourceWA is connected to the ESD system so using that for job searches makes the tracking easier.

One more tip - set up your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account before you start if you don't have one. That's how you'll access your ESD account online. Way better than trying to do everything by phone.

•Is that the same login I use for other state services or separate?

StellarSurfer
•Same one. If you've renewed your license online or anything like that, you probably already have a SAW account.

Just filed mine last week and it was pretty straightforward. The hardest part was remembering all my previous employers and their addresses. Make sure you have that info handy before you start.

•How far back do they ask for employment history?

Sean Kelly
•18 months I think, but it might depend on your situation. Better to have more info than not enough.

The Washington ESD website has step by step instructions but honestly they're not great. YouTube has some helpful videos that walk through the whole process if you're more of a visual learner.

Don't forget about the tax implications! Your unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them when you file your return next year.

Emma Taylor
•Oh I didn't even think about taxes. Is it better to have them withheld?
0 coins
Luca Greco
•Depends on your situation but I'd recommend having them withheld so you don't get hit with a big tax bill later.

If your claim gets stuck in adjudication like mine did, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier is actually pretty useful. I used it to finally talk to someone about why my claim was taking so long. Worth checking out if you run into problems.

•How long was your claim in adjudication before you used that?

•About 3 weeks with no updates. Called through Claimyr and found out they needed additional verification that I never got notified about.

•Good to know there's a backup option if things get stuck. Hopefully I won't need it but I'll keep it in mind.

MAKE SURE YOU FILE RIGHT AWAY! I waited a week thinking I had time and it delayed my whole claim. The sooner you file, the sooner your waiting week starts.

•Okay that settles it - I'm filing today! Thanks for the push.

•Smart move. Every day you wait is potentially money lost.

Just want to add that if you have any issues with your employer disputing your claim, don't panic. You'll get a chance to provide your side of the story during the adjudication process. Keep any documentation you have about your layoff.

Emma Taylor
•They gave me a layoff letter when I left. Should I upload that somewhere?

•Keep it safe for now. If ESD needs it during adjudication, they'll tell you how to submit it.

Good luck with your claim! The system isn't perfect but it does work for most people. Just be patient and thorough with your application.

One last thing - if you get denied for any reason, you can appeal the decision. You only have 30 days to file an appeal though, so don't wait if you disagree with their determination.
0 coins
Emma Taylor
•Hopefully won't need to appeal but good to know the timeline. 30 days isn't very long.
0 coins
Andre Lefebvre
•Exactly why I mentioned it. A lot of people miss the appeal deadline because they don't realize how short it is.

Another vote for using Claimyr if you need to reach ESD. Used it twice now and both times got through to an agent within an hour instead of spending all day calling. The video demo on their site explains it better than I can.

Alright I think we've covered everything! File soon, be thorough, keep records, and don't panic if things take a while. The system works even if it's slow sometimes.
