How to claim unemployment benefits in Washington State - need help with filing process
I just got laid off from my warehouse job and I'm completely lost on how to claim unemployment benefits. I've never filed for UI before and the Washington ESD website is confusing me. Do I need to go somewhere in person or can I do everything online? What documents do I need to have ready? I'm worried I'm going to mess something up and delay my benefits. Can someone walk me through the basic steps of how to actually start a claim?

You can file your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov - don't need to go anywhere in person unless there's a specific issue. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment info for the last 18 months (employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason you left each job). The process takes about 30-45 minutes if you have everything ready.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic job info?

Fiona Gallagher
•Just the basic info for the initial claim. They might ask for pay stubs later during adjudication if there are any questions about your wages.

Make sure you file as soon as possible! Your claim starts the week you file, not when you lost your job. I made that mistake and lost a week of benefits.

•Oh wow, I didn't know that. I got laid off last Tuesday, so I should file today then?

Thais Soares
•Yes, file today! The sooner the better. Each week you wait is potentially money lost.

The Washington ESD system can be really frustrating to navigate, especially if you run into issues and need to talk to someone. I spent weeks trying to get through their phone lines when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Finally discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which actually got me connected to an ESD agent the same day. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Saved me so much stress!

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - they basically handle the calling for you and get you connected when an agent is available. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

Here's what you need to know about the actual filing process: 1) Go to SecureAccess Washington (SAW) first to create your account if you don't have one. 2) Then go to the ESD unemployment section and start your claim. 3) Answer all questions honestly - they cross-check everything. 4) Submit your claim and write down your confirmation number. 5) Wait for your monetary determination letter in the mail. 6) Start filing weekly claims the Sunday after you submit your initial claim.

•This is super helpful! How long does it usually take to get approved?

•If there are no issues, you should get your monetary determination within a week and first payment within 2-3 weeks. But if your claim goes to adjudication for any reason, it can take much longer.

•What causes a claim to go to adjudication? I'm worried mine might get delayed.

•Common reasons include: quit vs laid off disputes, working while claiming benefits, availability issues, or if your former employer contests the claim. Most adjudications are routine though.

Don't forget you have to do job search activities once you start claiming! Washington requires 3 job search activities per week and you have to keep a log. I learned this the hard way when they asked for my records during an audit.

•What counts as a job search activity?

•Applying for jobs, attending job fairs, networking events, job interviews, creating profiles on job sites. Keep detailed records with dates, employer names, and what you did.

ugh the whole system is such a nightmare. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because they "needed more information" but never told me what information they needed until i finally got through to someone

•That sounds awful! How did you finally get through to talk to someone?

•called like 100 times a day for weeks. the phone system hangs up on you constantly

One important thing - make sure you understand the difference between your initial claim and your weekly claims. Your initial claim establishes your benefit year and weekly benefit amount. Then you have to file a weekly claim every week to actually get paid for that week, even if nothing has changed in your situation.

•So I have to do something every single week? I thought once I filed I would just get payments automatically.

Fiona Gallagher
•Nope, you have to actively file every week certifying that you're still unemployed and looking for work. Miss a week and you don't get paid for that week.

•This is so confusing compared to other states. Why can't they just make it automatic?

Another heads up - if you worked for multiple employers in the last 18 months, make sure you have ALL their information ready. Washington ESD will want details on every job, even short-term ones. Missing employer info can delay your claim.

•What if I can't remember exact dates or addresses for old jobs?

Destiny Bryant
•Do your best to estimate, but try to be as accurate as possible. Check old tax documents or pay stubs if you have them. ESD will verify with employers anyway.

Just want to mention Claimyr again since phone issues came up - if you do run into problems and need to reach ESD, it's been a lifesaver for me and several people I know. The regular phone system is basically unusable during busy periods.

•How much does something like that cost though?

•I'd rather pay something reasonable than waste days of my life on hold or getting hung up on. Check their site for current info - claimyr.com

Pro tip: file your weekly claims on Sunday mornings when the system is less busy. I've had much fewer technical issues filing early in the week versus waiting until Friday or Saturday.

•Good to know! Is there a deadline for filing weekly claims?
0 coins
TillyCombatwarrior
•You have until the following Saturday to file for the previous week, but don't wait that long. File as early as possible each week.

Make sure you read the handbook they send you! I know it's boring but it explains a lot of rules that aren't obvious from the website. Like you can't just refuse job offers or you might lose benefits.

•What if a job offer is way below my previous salary?

Anna Xian
•There are rules about 'suitable work' that consider your skills and previous wages, but after a certain period you might have to accept lower-paying jobs. Read the handbook for specifics.

been on unemployment twice in the last 5 years and honestly the hardest part is dealing with their customer service when something goes wrong. the automated system works fine for routine stuff but god help you if you need an actual person

Xan Dae
•That's what I'm worried about. What's the best way to avoid problems?

Jungleboo Soletrain
•be completely honest on everything, keep detailed records, and file consistently every week. most problems come from inconsistencies or missing information

Don't forget about the waiting week! Washington has a one-week waiting period for new claims, so you won't get paid for your first week even if you're approved immediately.

Xan Dae
•So I file weekly claims but don't get paid for the first week?
0 coins
Thais Soares
•Exactly. You still have to file the weekly claim for that first week, but you won't receive payment for it. It's just how the system works.

If you get a separation notice from your employer, bring that info when you file. Sometimes employers contest claims and having documentation helps your case.

Xan Dae
•My employer said it was a layoff due to slow business. Should that be pretty straightforward?
0 coins
Rajan Walker
•Yes, layoffs for business reasons are usually approved quickly as long as your employer doesn't contest it. Keep any paperwork they gave you just in case.

One thing that caught me off guard - you have to report ANY work or income during your weekly claims, even just a few hours of freelance work or odd jobs. Don't try to hide anything because they will find out.
0 coins
Xan Dae
•What happens if you work a few hours? Do you lose all benefits for that week?
0 coins
Nadia Zaldivar
•No, they just reduce your benefits based on how much you earned. It's better to report it honestly than get caught hiding income.

The ESD website has a bunch of tutorial videos that are actually pretty helpful if you're confused about any step. I watched them before filing and it made the process much smoother.

•Thanks! I'll check those out before I start filing.

•Yeah they're on the main unemployment page. Way more helpful than trying to figure it out from the written instructions alone.

Last mention of this but seriously, if you do need to contact ESD for any reason during your claim, save yourself the headache and use Claimyr. I've recommended it to several friends now and everyone has had success getting through. The peace of mind is worth it when you're dealing with benefit delays.

•I was skeptical at first but tried it last month when my claim got stuck. Actually worked - got connected to an agent within a few hours instead of calling for days.

•Good to know this option exists if I run into problems. Hopefully everything goes smoothly but it's reassuring to have a backup plan.

Main thing is don't panic if the process seems overwhelming at first. Thousands of people file unemployment claims every week and most go through without major issues. Take it step by step and you'll be fine.
