How do I claim my unemployment benefits through Washington ESD?
I just got laid off from my warehouse job last week and I'm completely lost on how to actually claim my unemployment benefits. I know I need to file with Washington ESD but I don't even know where to start. Do I need to go somewhere in person or can I do it online? What information do I need to have ready? I'm really stressed about this because I have rent due next week and I don't want to mess anything up.

Everything is done online now through the Washington ESD website. You'll need to create an account first, then file your initial application. Make sure you have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months ready. Don't wait - you want to file as soon as possible after your last day of work.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic job info like dates and employer names?

Ava Johnson
•Just the basic info for the initial application - employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. They might ask for documentation later if needed.

The Washington ESD website can be really confusing at first. After you file your initial claim, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to actually get paid. Don't skip weeks even if you think you might not qualify - it's better to file and let them decide.

•Weekly claims? So filing the first application isn't enough to get benefits?

Miguel Diaz
•Nope, the initial claim just establishes your eligibility. You have to certify every week that you're still unemployed and looking for work to get your weekly payment.

•This is really important - missing even one weekly claim can delay your benefits. Set a reminder on your phone.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone (which you probably will), I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true with how impossible it is to reach anyone at Washington ESD.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending all day redialing.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements too. In Washington you need to make 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. They can audit you at any time so don't slack on this part.

•3 job searches per week? That seems like a lot when I'm just starting to look.

•It's really not that bad once you get into a routine. Applying online, networking, even attending job fairs all count as contacts.

•And make sure you're using WorkSourceWA to log your job searches. Washington ESD integrates with that system.

ugh the whole system is such a mess. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because they kept asking for more verification documents. make copies of EVERYTHING before you submit

•6 weeks?? I can't wait that long for money. What kind of verification did they want?

Keisha Williams
•identity verification mostly. they wanted multiple forms of ID and kept rejecting what i sent. super frustrating

Pro tip: After you file your initial claim, it typically takes 2-3 weeks for your first payment IF everything goes smoothly. Don't panic if your claim shows 'pending' or goes into adjudication - that's normal for many claims, especially if there are any questions about your separation from work.

ElectricDreamer
•What does adjudication mean exactly? That sounds scary.
0 coins
Zainab Ahmed
•Adjudication just means they're reviewing your claim to make sure you qualify. Could be because of how you left your job, wage discrepancies, or just random verification. Usually resolves within a few weeks.

•Mine was in adjudication for a month because my employer disputed my claim. Eventually got approved but the wait was brutal.

I'm dealing with this right now too. Filed 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard anything. Should I be worried?

Zainab Ahmed
•3 weeks isn't unusual, especially if your claim is being reviewed. Check your account online - does it show any action items or just 'pending'?
0 coins
Paolo Rizzo
•Just says pending. No action items or anything to do on my end.

•This is exactly when Claimyr helped me. I was able to call and get an actual update on my claim status instead of just wondering what was happening.

Don't forget about the waiting week! Washington has a one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits, so your first payable week is actually your second week of unemployment.
0 coins
ElectricDreamer
•Wait, so even if I file this week I won't get paid for it?
0 coins
Amina Sy
•Exactly. You still need to file the weekly claim for that first week, but you won't get paid for it. It's just how the system works.

also make sure you're available for work every day. if you go on vacation or have any days you can't work, you need to report that on your weekly claim or they'll think you're committing fraud

•Good to know. I was thinking about visiting family next week but maybe I should wait.

•You can still travel, just make sure you report it honestly on your weekly claim. They deduct those days from your payment.

The Washington ESD mobile app is actually pretty decent once you get used to it. Easier than the website for filing weekly claims in my opinion.

•There's an app? What's it called?

Oliver Fischer
•Just search 'Washington ESD' in your app store. Makes the weekly filing much quicker.

Quick question - do I need to report unemployment income on my taxes?
0 coins
Zainab Ahmed
•Yes, unemployment benefits are taxable income. Washington ESD will send you a 1099-G form at the end of the year. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments if you want.

•Thanks, good to know ahead of time so I don't get surprised next tax season.

Been on unemployment twice in the last 5 years. My advice: be patient with the system but persistent about following up. Document everything and keep calling if something seems wrong with your claim.

ElectricDreamer
•How often should I call to follow up? I don't want to be annoying but I also need to make sure things are moving.

•If your claim has been pending for more than 3-4 weeks with no updates, definitely call. Before that, probably once a week is reasonable.

•Or use Claimyr to actually get through instead of spending hours redialing. Much less frustrating than the regular phone system.

What happens if I make a mistake on my initial application? Can I fix it later?
0 coins
Ava Johnson
•You can make corrections, but it's better to be careful the first time. Some changes require calling Washington ESD or submitting forms, which can delay your claim.
0 coins
Javier Garcia
•Okay, I'll double-check everything before submitting. Better safe than sorry.

THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! Filed 2 months ago and still fighting for my benefits. They keep asking for the same documents over and over. So frustrated with Washington ESD right now!!!

Zainab Ahmed
•That's really frustrating. Have you tried contacting your state representative's office? Sometimes they can help escalate issues that are stuck in the system.

Emma Taylor
•Didn't know that was an option. Thanks for the tip!

Make sure your bank account info is correct when you file. Had a friend who got his first payment delayed by weeks because he had an old account number in the system.

ElectricDreamer
•Do they do direct deposit or mail checks?
0 coins
Malik Robinson
•Both options available, but direct deposit is much faster. Checks can take up to a week to arrive in the mail.

i filed online last month and it was pretty straightforward. took maybe 30 minutes to complete the whole application. just make sure you have all your employment info handy first

ElectricDreamer
•30 minutes doesn't sound too bad. Was there anything that tripped you up?

•just remembering exact dates for all my previous jobs. wish i had kept better records

One thing they don't tell you is that your benefit amount is based on your highest-earning quarter from the past year. So if you had a really good quarter, your weekly amount will be higher.
0 coins
ElectricDreamer
•Interesting, I didn't know that. How do they calculate the exact weekly amount?
0 coins
Ravi Choudhury
•It's pretty complicated - based on your total wages in your base period divided by a certain number. The Washington ESD website has a calculator you can use to estimate.

Remember that if you do any part-time work while collecting unemployment, you MUST report it on your weekly claim. Even just a few hours can affect your payment.

•What if I just do some gig work like DoorDash occasionally?
0 coins
CosmosCaptain
•That counts as work too. Report all income, even gig work. They'll reduce your weekly benefit accordingly but you won't get in trouble for fraud.

Ava Johnson
•This is super important. Unreported income is one of the main reasons people get overpayment notices later.
