When can unemployment be filed with Washington ESD - timing requirements?
I'm getting laid off next month and want to make sure I file my unemployment claim at the right time. I've heard conflicting info about when you can actually file with Washington ESD. Can you file before your last day of work or do you have to wait until after? Also does it matter what day of the week you file? I don't want to mess this up and delay my benefits.

You can file your initial claim the Sunday of the week you become unemployed or have your hours reduced. Don't wait - Washington ESD recommends filing as soon as you're eligible because there's a waiting week before benefits start.

•So if my last day is Friday, I can file that Sunday? That's good to know.

•Yep exactly. I filed the Sunday after my last day and it went smooth.

Just to clarify - you file for the week you become unemployed, not before. So if you're working Monday through Friday of week 1, you file on Sunday of week 2. The system won't let you file for weeks you're still employed.

•That makes sense. So timing is important to get it right.

•Yeah and make sure you have all your employer info ready when you file. Last 18 months of work history.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim timing issues. Their phone lines are always busy and I keep getting disconnected. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•The phone situation is really frustrating. I discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They have a demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that. Does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point.

•Yeah it worked for me. You go to claimyr.com and they handle the calling and waiting. Much better than spending hours on hold.

IMPORTANT: Don't file too early! I made this mistake and filed while I was still technically employed (even though I knew I was getting laid off). Washington ESD rejected my claim and I had to wait even longer. Only file after your employment actually ends.

•Oh no that sucks! How long did it take to get it straightened out?

•About 3 weeks total. Had to reapply and they had to review everything again. Not fun when you need the money.

Also remember that Washington ESD processes claims differently depending on when you file. Weekend filings get processed Monday, so there's no real advantage to filing on a specific day of the week.

•Good to know. I was worried about that part too.

Don't forget about the one week waiting period. Even if you file immediately, your first payable week is the second week of unemployment. Plan your finances accordingly.

•Wait, so you don't get paid for the first week at all?
0 coins
Gabrielle Dubois
•Correct. The first week is unpaid. It's been that way for years with Washington ESD.

•That's something I didn't know. Thanks for the heads up.

Quick question - what if you're getting laid off but they're giving you severance pay? Do you wait until the severance runs out to file?

Aisha Patel
•Severance might affect your benefits timing. You should still file when you become unemployed but report the severance on your weekly claims. Washington ESD will determine how it affects your eligibility.

Carlos Mendoza
•Ok so file right away but be honest about the severance. Got it.

I filed my claim 3 weeks ago and it's still pending in adjudication. Anyone know how long this usually takes? I'm getting really worried about my bills.

•Adjudication can take 3-6 weeks depending on the complexity. Keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending.

•I used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD about my adjudication delay. The agent was able to tell me exactly what they were waiting for and it got resolved faster.

•I might try that. This waiting is killing me.

One more thing - make sure you're available to work when you file. If you're going on vacation right after getting laid off, it might affect your claim. Washington ESD requires you to be able and available.

Klaus Schmidt
•What counts as available? Like you have to be ready to start a job immediately?

Raj Gupta
•Basically yes. You need to be ready, willing, and able to work. No major restrictions that would prevent you from accepting suitable employment.

Does anyone know if the timing is different for part-time workers? I'm having my hours cut to almost nothing but not completely laid off.

Aisha Patel
•You can file for partial unemployment if your hours are reduced. Same timing rules apply - file for the week your hours get cut, not before.

Lena Müller
•Thanks! I wasn't sure if partial unemployment had different rules.

Just want to add - keep track of your filing date! Washington ESD uses that date for determining your benefit year and when you can file again if needed. It's important for their records.

•Good point. I'll make sure to write it down somewhere safe.

Anyone else think the Washington ESD system is confusing? I had to call them three times just to understand when I could file. The website isn't very clear about timing.

Paolo Bianchi
•Yeah the website is pretty confusing. The phone system is even worse though.

•I agree. That's why I ended up using Claimyr - couldn't get through on my own and needed answers about my filing date.

For anyone reading this - document everything! Write down when you file, what you report, and any correspondence with Washington ESD. It helps if there are issues later.

•That's really good advice. I'll start a file folder for everything.

Quick tip - have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employer information ready before you start filing. It'll make the process go much faster.

•Thanks! I'll gather all that stuff ahead of time.

Remember that Washington ESD has specific hours when you can file online. I think it's 6 AM to 10 PM most days. Don't try to file in the middle of the night and get frustrated when it doesn't work.

•Oh wow I didn't know there were specific hours. Good to know.

•Yeah that would have been frustrating to find out the hard way!

Last thing - if you're filing near a holiday weekend, expect delays in processing. Washington ESD doesn't process claims on state holidays so plan accordingly.

Klaus Schmidt
•Good point about holidays. I didn't think of that.

•Yeah I filed right before Labor Day weekend one year and it took forever to get processed.
