When can I file for unemployment - Washington ESD timing requirements?
I'm getting laid off next Friday and want to make sure I file for unemployment at the right time. Should I wait until after my last day of work or can I file beforehand? I heard there's specific timing rules with Washington ESD but I'm not sure what they are. Don't want to mess this up and delay my benefits.

You should file your claim on the Sunday after your last day of work. So if Friday is your last day, file that Sunday. Don't file before your last day or it can cause issues with your claim.

•Thanks! So I should wait until the Sunday after my termination date?

Christian Bierman
•Exactly. That way your claim starts the right week and you won't have any backdating issues.

I made the mistake of filing too early once and it screwed up my whole claim. Had to call Washington ESD like 20 times to get it sorted out.

•What happened when you filed early? Did it delay your payments?

Emma Olsen
•Yeah it created a whole mess with the dates. They had to adjust everything and it took weeks to fix.

The official rule is you can file your initial claim starting the Sunday of the week you become unemployed. You'll need your separation information from your employer - make sure you get that paperwork before you leave.

•What separation paperwork should I ask for from HR?

Lucas Lindsey
•Your final pay stub, any severance info, and the reason for separation. Washington ESD will need those details for your claim.

I struggled for weeks trying to get through to Washington ESD when I had timing issues with my claim. Finally used Claimyr.com and got connected to an agent in like 20 minutes. They have this video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Saved me so much frustration!

•Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work to get through the phone lines?

•Worked for me! I was spending hours on hold every day and getting nowhere. This got me through right away.

Lucas Lindsey
•File the Sunday of the week you lose your job. So if you're fired Wednesday, file that coming Sunday.

Don't forget you have to be able and available for work when you file. If you're taking a vacation right after your layoff, that could affect your claim timing.

•Good point - I was thinking about taking a few days off but maybe I should wait until after I file.

•Yeah, you need to be ready to work when you file your claim or it can cause complications.

The Washington ESD website has a whole section about when to file but honestly it's pretty confusing. The basic rule is Sunday of the week you become unemployed though.

•That website is terrible. Half the links don't even work properly.

•True, it's not user friendly at all. But the timing info is buried in there somewhere.

Also make sure you have all your employment history ready. Washington ESD will ask for details about your jobs from the last 18 months, including dates and wages.

•Do I need exact dates or just approximate months?

Christian Bierman
•Try to get exact dates if possible. The more accurate your info, the smoother your claim process will be.

I filed my claim at like 2am on a Sunday because I couldn't sleep. Worked fine - the system is available 24/7 online.

Makayla Shoemaker
•Good to know I don't have to wait for business hours to file online.

•Nope, anytime after midnight Sunday you can file for that week.

Question - if I'm getting severance pay does that affect when I can file? My company is giving me 2 weeks severance.
0 coins
Lucas Lindsey
•Severance can affect your claim timing. You may need to wait until your severance period ends before you can collect benefits.

Miles Hammonds
•Ugh, so I might not get unemployment for 2 weeks even if I file right away?
0 coins
Lucas Lindsey
•Depends on how your severance is structured. Washington ESD will review it when you file your claim.

Pro tip: file early in the morning on Sunday if you can. The system tends to be slower later in the day when more people are online.

Makayla Shoemaker
•Thanks for the tip! I'll set an alarm for Sunday morning.

•Yeah, I always filed around 6am and never had any website issues.

Make sure your employer doesn't contest your claim if you're being laid off. Sometimes they mark it as termination for cause even when it's just downsizing.

Makayla Shoemaker
•How would I know if they contest it? Would Washington ESD tell me?
0 coins
Micah Franklin
•Yes, you'll get a notice if there's any dispute about your separation reason. Then you might have to provide more documentation.

If you do run into any issues with your claim timing or need to talk to someone at Washington ESD, definitely check out Claimyr. I wish I had known about it sooner - would have saved me weeks of frustration trying to get through on the phone.

•How much does that service cost? Is it worth it?

Sophie Duck
•For me it was totally worth it just to avoid the stress of calling all day. Much easier than sitting on hold for hours.

I'm in a similar situation - getting laid off in 2 weeks. Good to know about the Sunday rule. Do I need to register with WorkSource before filing?
0 coins
Lucas Lindsey
•You don't need to register with WorkSource before filing, but you'll need to do it eventually as part of your job search requirements.

PrinceJoe
•Ok thanks, one less thing to worry about right now.

The whole system is so confusing. Why can't they just let you file whenever you lose your job instead of having these weird Sunday rules?
0 coins
Christian Bierman
•It's because unemployment benefits are calculated by the week, and their system runs on a Sunday to Saturday schedule.
0 coins
Brooklyn Knight
•I guess that makes sense but it's still annoying if you get fired on a Monday and have to wait almost a week to file.

Don't forget to keep track of any job applications you submit after you lose your job. Washington ESD requires proof of job search activities.
0 coins
Makayla Shoemaker
•How many job applications do I need to submit each week?
0 coins
Owen Devar
•I think it's 3 job search activities per week, but check the current requirements when you file your claim.

File online if you can. The phone system for filing new claims is a nightmare. The website works much better.

•Good to know - I was planning to file online anyway.

•Smart choice. The online system walks you through everything step by step.

I had to call Washington ESD about my filing date and spent literally 3 hours on hold. Finally got through with Claimyr and the agent explained everything perfectly. Wish I had tried that first!

•Yeah definitely keep it handy. You never know when you'll need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD.

One more thing - make sure you file for the correct week. If you mess up the dates it can cause delays in your first payment.
0 coins
Makayla Shoemaker
•So as long as I file on the Sunday after my last day of work, I should be good?
0 coins
Connor Rupert
•Exactly. And double check all your dates before submitting the application.
