When can I apply for unemployment benefits in Washington state?
I'm about to lose my job next week and I'm trying to figure out the timing for filing my unemployment claim. Should I wait until my last day of work or can I apply before then? I've never done this before and don't want to mess up the process. Does Washington ESD have specific rules about when you can submit your initial application?

You should file your claim as soon as you become unemployed, but not before your last day of work. Washington ESD processes claims based on when you actually become unemployed, so filing early can cause delays or complications with your claim.

•Thanks! So I should wait until the day after my last day of work to file online?

•Exactly. File the day after your last day of work or as soon as possible after that. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed.

The Washington ESD website says you can file your claim online at esd.wa.gov starting the Sunday after your last day of work. There's also a waiting week before you can receive benefits, so don't delay filing.

•Wait, is there still a waiting week? I thought they got rid of that during COVID.

•The waiting week was suspended during the pandemic but it's back now as of 2023. You still need to file for that first week but won't receive payment for it.

I tried calling Washington ESD to ask about filing timing and couldn't get through after hours of trying. The phone system is terrible - kept getting disconnected. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual agent in like 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They don't publish pricing but it was worth it to get real answers instead of being stuck in phone hell.

•I've heard of Claimyr before, my cousin used them when her claim got stuck in adjudication. She said it was a lifesaver.

make sure you have all your documents ready when you file!! you'll need your social security number, employment history for the past 18 months, and your employer's information. don't file without having everything ready or it will slow down your claim

•What kind of employment history do they need exactly?

Lucas Adams
•You need employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation for each job in the past 18 months. Also keep any documentation about why you lost your job.

Just a heads up - even if you file right away, it can take weeks to get your first payment. My claim took 3 weeks to process and that was without any issues. If there are any problems with your application, it goes into adjudication which can take much longer.

•What causes a claim to go into adjudication?

•Lots of things - if you quit vs were fired, if there are questions about your work history, if your employer contests the claim. Pretty much any discrepancy can trigger it.

•My claim went into adjudication because I had a second job that I kept working. Took 6 weeks to resolve even though I reported everything correctly.

The Washington ESD system is so confusing. I filed my claim but then realized I made a mistake on one of the dates. Tried to call to fix it but couldn't get through. Should I file a new claim or just wait?

•Don't file a new claim! Contact Washington ESD to correct the information. Filing multiple claims will cause bigger problems.

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr. When you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD for corrections or questions, their phone system is impossible. At least with Claimyr you can actually reach an agent.

Also remember you have to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. Even if you haven't received your first payment yet, you still need to file every week starting the week after you become unemployed.

•How do you file the weekly claims? Is it the same website?

Michael Adams
•Yes, same website. You log into your account and file your weekly claim every Sunday for the previous week. Don't miss filing or you could lose benefits for that week.

I'm in a similar situation, getting laid off next month. Do I need to wait until I'm officially unemployed to create my account on the Washington ESD website?

•You can create your account ahead of time, but don't file your actual claim until after your last day of work. Having the account set up can save time when you're ready to file.

•Good idea, I'll set up the account this weekend so I'm ready to go.

The whole unemployment system is a nightmare. I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my claim status. Why do they make it so hard to get help?? They act like they're doing us a favor when it's our money we paid into the system.

•I feel your frustration. The system is definitely overwhelmed. Have you tried calling at different times of day?

•I've tried everything - early morning, lunch time, late afternoon. Nothing works. Someone mentioned that Claimyr service earlier, might have to try that.

Just want to add that you should file even if you're not sure you qualify. Let Washington ESD determine eligibility rather than assuming you don't qualify. I almost didn't file because I thought I wouldn't qualify, but I ended up getting benefits.

•That's good advice. What made you think you wouldn't qualify?

•I was a contract worker and thought that disqualified me, but it turns out I had enough regular employment in my base period to qualify for benefits.

Does anyone know if there's a deadline for filing? Like if I wait a few weeks after losing my job, can I still file?

Lucas Adams
•You should file as soon as possible because benefits are only paid from the date you file your claim, not from when you became unemployed. So waiting costs you money.

Katherine Harris
•Yeah, don't wait. I waited 2 weeks to file and lost out on those 2 weeks of benefits. They don't backdate payments to when you actually lost your job.

The timing thing is confusing but basically: lose job on Friday, file claim on Sunday or Monday. Then file weekly claims every Sunday after that. Simple once you know the pattern.

•That makes sense. Thanks for breaking it down simply!

•Exactly. The key is don't overthink it - just file as soon as you're unemployed and then stay on top of your weekly claims.

One more thing - make sure you have a good phone number and email address on file. Washington ESD will contact you if they need additional information, and if they can't reach you, it delays your claim.

•Good point. I should update my contact info before I file.

•Yes, and check your email regularly. Sometimes important notices get sent to email instead of regular mail.

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the helpful advice here! I was really stressed about the timing and process, but now I have a clear plan. I'll set up my account this weekend, gather all my employment documents, and then file my claim the day after my last day of work. It's reassuring to know that so many people have gone through this successfully. One question though - should I expect any confirmation email or notification after I submit my initial claim?

Jeremiah Brown
•Yes, you should receive a confirmation email after submitting your initial claim, and Washington ESD will also send you a determination letter (usually within a week or two) that tells you if your claim is approved and what your weekly benefit amount will be. Make sure to save all these documents! Also, you'll get instructions on how to file your weekly claims. The determination letter is really important because it has your claim details and any requirements you need to meet to keep receiving benefits.

As someone who recently went through this process, I can confirm the advice here is spot on. File the day after your last day of work, not before. I made the mistake of filing too early thinking it would save time, but it actually caused delays because Washington ESD had to adjust my claim start date. Also, be patient with the phone system - it's frustrating but the online system at esd.wa.gov works much better for most things. Make sure you have your Social Security card, ID, and pay stubs ready before you start. The whole process took about 20 minutes online once I had everything organized. Don't stress too much - thousands of people do this successfully every week!

•This is really helpful! I'm glad to hear the online system works well once you're organized. Quick question - when you say you filed too early and it caused delays, how long did it take to get that sorted out? I'm worried about making any mistakes that could slow down my benefits since I'll need them pretty quickly after losing my job.
