What makes you qualified for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD?
I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD and honestly the website is confusing me. I worked at a restaurant for 8 months but got let go because business was slow. I made about $28,000 last year between two jobs. I know there are work history requirements and stuff about being able to work, but what exactly makes someone qualified? Do I need to have worked a certain number of hours or earn a minimum amount? Also heard something about having to look for jobs - how does that work exactly?

Basic qualifications for Washington ESD unemployment: you need sufficient work history (usually 680 hours in your base year), lost your job through no fault of your own, able and available to work, and actively seeking work. Since you worked 8 months and earned $28k, you probably meet the earnings requirement. Being laid off due to slow business typically qualifies you.

•Thanks! What's a base year though? Is that just the last 12 months?

•Base year is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you file. So if you file now in 2025, it would be Q1 2024 through Q4 2024.

The job search requirement is 3 work search activities per week. You log them in WorkSourceWA and they can be things like applying for jobs, networking, going to job fairs, etc. You have to keep detailed records.

•Do I have to do that right away or can I wait a few weeks?

•You need to start immediately once your claim is approved. Don't wait or you could get disqualified.

Just be warned that getting through to Washington ESD on the phone is nearly impossible. I've been trying for weeks to get my claim sorted out and can't reach anyone. The system is so backed up. If you need to talk to someone about your qualification questions, you might want to try Claimyr.com - they have a service that helps you get through to ESD agents. I saw their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and it looks legit.

•Really? How does that work exactly?

•They basically handle the calling for you and connect you when they get through. Way better than spending hours on hold.

•I used Claimyr too when I had adjudication issues. Definitely worth it if you're stuck.

omg the qualification stuff is so confusing! I thought I qualified but then they wanted all this documentation about my work history and I had to provide pay stubs from like 2 years ago. Make sure you have all your employment records ready when you apply.

•What kind of documentation do they usually want?

Axel Far
•Pay stubs, W-2s, anything showing your wages and employment dates. The more you have the better.

Another important qualification is that you have to be physically able to work and available for work. If you have any restrictions or limitations, you need to report those. Also, if you're going to school full-time, that can affect your eligibility unless you're in an approved training program.

•I'm not in school so that shouldn't be a problem. What about if I can only work certain hours due to childcare?

Jasmine Hernandez
•You can have some restrictions but you still need to be available for a reasonable amount of work. Childcare restrictions are pretty common and usually acceptable.

•Yeah I had childcare restrictions and still qualified. Just be honest about your availability.

The earnings requirement is based on your highest earning quarter in your base year. You need at least $1,736 in your highest quarter AND total base year earnings of at least 1.5 times your high quarter amount. With $28k you should be fine.

Melody Miles
•That sounds complicated but I think I earned more than that in my best quarter.

•The system will calculate it automatically when you apply. Don't stress too much about the math.

Wait I'm confused about the work search thing. Do you have to apply for jobs every single week or can you do other activities?

Eva St. Cyr
•You need 3 activities per week but they don't all have to be job applications. You can attend job fairs, do networking, take skills assessments, etc.

•Oh that's not as bad as I thought. Thanks for clarifying!

The system is SO broken. I've been waiting 6 weeks for my claim to be reviewed and still haven't heard anything. They say I'm in 'adjudication' whatever that means. This is ridiculous!

Nathaniel Mikhaylov
•Adjudication means they're reviewing your claim to determine eligibility. It can take a while unfortunately.

•6 weeks is not 'a while' - it's completely unacceptable. People have bills to pay!

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. When you're stuck in adjudication that long, you really need to talk to someone.

Another thing to know - if you quit your job, you generally won't qualify unless it was for 'good cause.' Being laid off like you were should be fine though.

Melody Miles
•Yeah I was definitely laid off, not quit. Business was just really slow after the holidays.

•That's a pretty standard reason for layoffs. You should be good to go.

Don't forget about the waiting week! Even if you qualify, you won't get paid for your first week. It's unpaid but you still have to file that week to establish your claim.

Melody Miles
•Wait, so I have to wait a whole week before getting any money?
0 coins
Finnegan Gunn
•Yep, the first week is unpaid. After that you get weekly payments if you keep filing and meet the requirements.

Just want to add that you also can't be receiving certain other benefits while on unemployment. Like if you're getting workers comp or disability, that could affect your eligibility.

Melody Miles
•I'm not getting any other benefits so that shouldn't be an issue.

The monetary determination letter will tell you exactly how much you qualify for and for how long. Usually you can get benefits for up to 26 weeks if you have enough work history.
0 coins
Melody Miles
•26 weeks sounds like a decent amount of time to find something new.

Ashley Simian
•Yeah it gives you some breathing room to find the right job instead of just taking anything out of desperation.

I had to provide so much documentation when I applied. They wanted proof of every job I'd had in the past 2 years. Just be prepared for that.

•Good to know. I'll try to gather everything before I apply.

One more thing - make sure you report any work you do while collecting benefits. Even if it's just a few hours, you have to report it or you could get in trouble for fraud.

Melody Miles
•What if I pick up just a couple shifts here and there?

Taylor To
•Still have to report it. They'll reduce your benefits for that week but you won't get in trouble if you're honest about it.

The whole process is honestly pretty straightforward once you get started. Don't overthink it too much.

I've been on unemployment twice and both times it was fine. Just follow the rules and you'll be okay. The job search requirement isn't that hard to meet.
