What is the number to file for unemployment with Washington ESD?
I just got laid off from my warehouse job yesterday and need to file for unemployment benefits. I've been searching online but can't find a clear phone number to actually file my initial claim with Washington ESD. The website keeps directing me to online filing but I'm more comfortable doing this over the phone. Does anyone know the actual number to call to file for unemployment? I'm worried about missing deadlines and want to get this started ASAP.

You can file online at esd.wa.gov which is actually faster than calling. The phone lines are usually swamped and you'll be on hold for hours. The online system walks you through everything step by step.

•I tried the website but it seems confusing to me. I'm not great with computers and would rather talk to a real person if possible.

•I get it, but honestly the online system is pretty straightforward once you start. Just have your social security number, last employer info, and work history ready.

The main Washington ESD customer service number is 800-318-6022, but like others said, expect long wait times. They're usually busiest on Mondays and right after people get paid. Try calling early morning or late afternoon for better chances.

•Thank you! I'll try calling tomorrow morning. Do you know what information they'll need from me when I call?

•You'll need your SSN, driver's license, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation from your last job. Have pay stubs handy if you have them.

I spent 3 hours on hold last week trying to get through to Washington ESD and finally gave up. Tried calling back the next day and same thing happened. The system is completely overwhelmed.

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they actually get you connected to a real Washington ESD agent without the endless hold times. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before. How does it work exactly? Is it legit?

•Yeah it's totally legitimate. They basically handle the waiting and calling for you, then connect you when they get an actual agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration honestly.

•I might have to try that if I can't get through by phone. Did you have any problems with the online system?

Word of warning - don't wait too long to file. You need to apply within a certain timeframe or you could lose benefits. I think it's like 4 weeks from when you became unemployed but double check that.

•Actually in Washington you should file as soon as possible after becoming unemployed. There's no specific deadline but the sooner the better since benefits are calculated from when you file, not when you lost your job.

•Good to know, thanks. I definitely want to get this filed today or tomorrow then.

I filed online last month and it was pretty straightforward. The trick is to have all your employer information ready - names, addresses, dates of employment, reason you left each job. If you're missing info it gets confusing.

•That's helpful. I worked at a few different places over the past year so I'll need to gather all that info first.

•Make sure you list all employers from the last 18 months, even short-term jobs. It affects your benefit calculation.

THE PHONE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! I've been trying to reach someone at Washington ESD for 2 weeks about my claim and can never get through. It's like they don't want to help people.

•I hear you on the frustration. Have you tried using different numbers? Sometimes the technical support line (855-682-0785) has shorter waits.

•I'll try that number, thanks. At this point I'm willing to try anything.

Pro tip: if you do call, have everything ready before you dial. They won't hold while you go find documents and if you get disconnected you're back to square one.

•Good advice. I'll make sure to have everything organized before I call.

I had good luck with Claimyr too when I needed to talk to someone about my adjudication issue. Way better than sitting on hold for hours just to get hung up on.

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already tight on money being unemployed.

•It's worth checking out their site for pricing info. For me it was worth it just to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD without the runaround.

Just went through this process myself. The online filing really isn't that bad once you get started. They have help text for each section that explains what they're asking for.

•Maybe I'll give the online system another try. I was probably just overwhelmed when I first looked at it.

•Yeah, take your time with it. You can save your progress and come back to it later if you need to find more information.

Whatever you do, don't let them tell you that you can't file by phone. That's your right as a claimant. They might try to push you to online filing but you can insist on phone filing if that's what you prefer.

•Good to know I have that option. I'll keep that in mind when I call.

Make sure you understand the difference between filing your initial claim and filing weekly claims. Your initial claim is the big application, then you have to file weekly claims every week to actually get paid.

Alexander Evans
•Oh I didn't realize there were two different things. So I file once to get approved, then file every week to get the money?
0 coins
William Schwarz
•Exactly. The initial claim establishes your eligibility and benefit amount. Then you file weekly claims to certify that you're still unemployed and looking for work.

I used Claimyr when I had issues with my standby claim and they were really helpful. Got me connected to an actual person at Washington ESD who could explain what was going on with my claim status.

•Seems like a lot of people have had success with that service. I might look into it if I can't get through the regular way.

Don't forget you'll also need to register with WorkSource Washington for the job search requirements. They'll tell you about this when you file but it's good to know ahead of time.

•Job search requirements? What exactly do I need to do for that?

•You have to do 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. WorkSource has the details but it includes things like applying for jobs, networking, going to job fairs, etc.

Been there with the phone runaround. Sometimes it's faster to just drive to a WorkSource office if you have one nearby. They can help you file in person.

•That's a good backup plan. I'll look up where the nearest WorkSource office is just in case.

Good luck with everything! The whole process is stressful but once you get your initial claim filed it gets easier. Just stay on top of your weekly claims and job search requirements.
