What does awaiting processing mean for unemployment - Washington ESD claim stuck
Filed my Washington ESD unemployment claim two weeks ago and it's been showing 'awaiting processing' status ever since. I can log into my account but there's no movement on my weekly claims either. Is this normal? Should I be worried that something's wrong with my application? I really need to know what this status means and how long it typically takes.

Awaiting processing basically means Washington ESD received your claim but hasn't started reviewing it yet. It's like being in a queue waiting for your turn. Usually takes 1-3 weeks depending on how busy they are.

•Thanks for explaining that! I was starting to panic thinking I did something wrong on my application.

•Mine was stuck there for almost a month last year, so don't freak out if it takes longer than expected.

The 'awaiting processing' status means your claim is in the initial review phase. Washington ESD staff will verify your employment history, wages, and reason for separation. Once they complete this review, your claim will either move to 'approved' status or 'adjudication' if they need more information.

•What happens if it goes to adjudication? That sounds scary.

•Adjudication just means they need to investigate something further - could be your separation reason, wage discrepancies, or other eligibility issues. It's not necessarily bad, just takes longer.

I had this same status for weeks and couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to check on it. The phone lines are always busy and the online messaging system is useless. Finally found claimyr.com which actually got me connected to a real person who could check my claim status. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service before, is it legit? I'm desperate to talk to someone about my claim.

•Yeah it's real, they basically keep calling Washington ESD for you until they get through. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•How much does it cost though? I'm already tight on money waiting for my claim to process.

THE AWAITING PROCESSING STATUS IS JUST WASHINGTON ESD'S WAY OF SAYING THEY'RE BACKED UP AND DONT CARE ABOUT US!!! I've been waiting 3 weeks and still nothing. This system is broken.

•I get the frustration but the status is actually normal processing. They're just overwhelmed with claims right now.

•same here, filed 3 weeks ago and still awaiting processing. at least we're not alone i guess

From what I understand, 'awaiting processing' is the first stage after you submit your initial claim. Washington ESD has to verify your wages with your employer, check your work history, and make sure you meet all the eligibility requirements. This can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on their workload.

•Do they contact your employer during this phase? I'm worried about my former boss knowing I filed for unemployment.

•Yes, they typically send a notice to your employer asking them to verify your separation reason and wages. It's standard procedure.

I work in HR and deal with Washington ESD notices regularly. The 'awaiting processing' status means they're working through the initial eligibility determination. They'll verify your wages, check if you were laid off or quit, and review any other separation issues. Most claims move out of this status within 2-3 weeks unless there are complications.

•What kind of complications would cause delays? I'm worried mine might have issues.

•Common delays include missing wage information, employer disputes about separation reason, or if you worked in multiple states recently.

•That's reassuring to hear! Did you get backpay for the weeks you were waiting?

•yep got backpay for all the weeks i was waiting, as long as u keep filing ur weekly claims

The worst part about awaiting processing is not knowing if you should keep filing weekly claims or not. I kept filing mine just in case, but it felt weird claiming benefits when I didn't know if I was even approved yet.

•You should definitely keep filing your weekly claims even during awaiting processing. If you're approved, you'll get backpay for those weeks. If you don't file, you lose those weeks forever.

•This is important - I missed filing for 2 weeks thinking I had to wait for approval and lost those weeks permanently.

I tried calling Washington ESD every day for a week to ask about my awaiting processing status and never got through. The automated system just says they're experiencing high call volume and hangs up. It's ridiculous that there's no way to get a simple status update.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - they handle all the calling for you and actually get through to agents. Worth checking out if you're tired of the runaround.

•I might have to try that service too. This is getting ridiculous.

My claim showed awaiting processing for exactly 10 business days then switched to approved overnight. I think they process them in batches or something because I know other people who filed around the same time and theirs all got approved the same day as mine.

•That makes sense about batch processing. I noticed a bunch of people on Facebook groups saying their claims all got approved on the same day last week.

•Mine's been processing for 12 business days now so hopefully I'm in the next batch!

Just to clarify something I see people getting confused about - 'awaiting processing' is different from 'adjudication'. Awaiting processing is normal initial review that every claim goes through. Adjudication happens if they find issues that need investigation. Most claims never go to adjudication.

•Thank you for clarifying that! I was worried awaiting processing meant there was already a problem with my claim.

•What does it mean if your claim goes straight to adjudication without showing awaiting processing first?
0 coins
Sean Matthews
•If it goes straight to adjudication, that usually means Washington ESD identified a potential issue immediately - like if you were fired for misconduct or there's a wage discrepancy.

I'm on week 3 of awaiting processing and starting to get really anxious. Bills are piling up and I have no idea when this will resolve. The uncertainty is almost worse than being denied because at least then I'd know where I stand.

Declan Ramirez
•I totally understand that anxiety. The waiting is the worst part. Have you tried using the online messaging system to ask for an update?

A Man D Mortal
•I sent a message through the system but it just says they'll respond within 5-7 business days. That was 6 days ago.

Pro tip: if your claim has been awaiting processing for more than 3 weeks, you might want to call and ask if they need any additional documentation from you. Sometimes they're waiting for something specific but don't tell you.

•Good advice but how do you actually get through to talk to someone? I've tried calling dozens of times.

•I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and they got me through to an agent who told me exactly what Washington ESD was waiting for. Turned out they needed additional wage verification from a previous employer.

Does anyone know if weekends count toward the processing time? Like if they say 2-3 weeks, is that business days or calendar days?
0 coins
Harper Collins
•I believe it's business days since Washington ESD doesn't process claims on weekends. But I'm not 100% sure about that.
0 coins
Kelsey Hawkins
•It's definitely business days. I counted and mine took exactly 15 business days to move from awaiting processing to approved.

The thing that bothers me most about the awaiting processing status is that there's no estimated timeframe given. Like, it would be so much less stressful if they just said 'expect 2-4 weeks' or something instead of leaving you completely in the dark.

Edwards Hugo
•Agreed! The lack of communication is really frustrating. Even a generic timeline would help manage expectations.

•I think they don't give timeframes because it varies so much depending on your situation and their workload. But yeah, some guidance would be nice.

For what it's worth, I've gone through this twice (got laid off again last year) and both times the awaiting processing phase took almost exactly 2 weeks. So there does seem to be some consistency in their processing times.

Jackson Carter
•That's actually really helpful to know. I'm coming up on 2 weeks so maybe mine will change status soon.

Sydney Torres
•Mine took 3 weeks the first time and only 10 days the second time, so I think it really depends on how busy they are when you file.

Just wanted to update everyone - my claim that was stuck in awaiting processing for 18 days finally got approved this morning! Hang in there everyone, it does eventually happen.

This thread has been really helpful. I was starting to think there was something wrong with my claim since it's been awaiting processing for 2 weeks, but sounds like that's totally normal. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!
