What documents to take to Washington ESD unemployment office appointment?

I have an in-person appointment at the Washington ESD office next week and I'm not sure what documents I need to bring. The letter just says 'bring relevant documentation' but doesn't specify what that means. This is for an adjudication issue on my claim - they want to verify my separation reason. Should I bring my termination letter, pay stubs, tax forms? I don't want to show up unprepared and have to reschedule. Has anyone been to an in-person appointment recently and know what they typically want to see?

Definitely bring your termination letter or separation notice if you have one. Also bring your ID, Social Security card, and at least 4-6 recent pay stubs. If you have any written communication with your employer about the separation (emails, texts, etc.), bring those too.

Thank you! I have the termination letter and pay stubs. Should I bring copies or originals?

0 coins

Bring originals but also make copies to leave with them if they need them. They usually just look at originals and make their own copies though.

0 coins

Bring everything you can think of honestly. I went last month and they asked for stuff I didn't expect like my W-2 from the previous year and bank statements showing my direct deposits.

0 coins

Bank statements? That seems excessive. What did they need those for?

0 coins

They wanted to verify the pay amounts matched what I reported. My case was about potential overpayment though so might be different than yours.

I had the same issue getting through to Washington ESD for weeks before my appointment. If you're having trouble reaching them by phone to clarify what to bring, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a real person at claimyr.com. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth trying if you need to ask specific questions before your appointment.

Interesting, I've never heard of that. Is it legitimate?

0 coins

Yeah it's legit, they just help you get through the phone queue. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

For separation issues specifically, bring: 1) Government ID 2) Termination letter/separation notice 3) Last 6 pay stubs 4) Any disciplinary actions or warnings 5) Unemployment benefit award letter 6) Any correspondence from your employer about the separation. Also bring a notebook to take notes during the meeting.

0 coins

This is super helpful, thank you! I didn't think about bringing disciplinary records but that makes sense.

0 coins

Good point about the notebook. I forgot half of what they told me in my appointment because I was so nervous.

0 coins

ugh i hate these appointments they always want MORE paperwork than what they tell you initially. bring EVERYTHING unemployment related you have in a folder

0 coins

That's what I'm worried about. I don't want to have to come back again.

0 coins

Better safe than sorry. I've had to reschedule twice because I didn't have the right documents.

0 coins

Also make sure you arrive 15 minutes early and have your Social Security number memorized. They'll ask for it multiple times throughout the appointment. If your case involves job search activities, bring your WorkSourceWA job search log as well.

0 coins

Good reminder about the job search log. I've been keeping track on WorkSourceWA so I should print that out.

0 coins

Don't forget to bring proof of address too - utility bill or lease agreement. They asked me for that at my appointment even though it wasn't on the list they gave me over the phone.

0 coins

Adding that to my list. It's crazy how they don't tell you everything upfront.

0 coins

They probably assume you know to bring basic ID documents but it should definitely be clearer in their communications.

0 coins

If you're dealing with adjudication issues, definitely bring any medical documentation if that's relevant to your separation. I had to bring FMLA paperwork for my case.

0 coins

Mine's not medical related but good to know for others who might see this thread.

One more thing - if you haven't been able to get through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions beforehand, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier can really help. I used it twice before my appointment to clarify what I needed to bring and it saved me from bringing a ton of unnecessary paperwork.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? Seems like we shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to unemployment.

0 coins

I don't think it's expensive but honestly it was worth it to me to not waste another whole day at the appointment because I had the wrong documents.

0 coins

bring a snack and water bottle too these appointments can take FOREVER. i was there for 3 hours last time

0 coins

Oh wow, 3 hours? I only blocked out an hour for this.

0 coins

yeah they were running behind and then my case was complicated. definitely plan for longer just in case

Here's a complete checklist for Washington ESD in-person appointments: Government-issued photo ID, Social Security card, termination/separation documents, last 6 pay stubs, any employer correspondence about separation, benefit award letter, WorkSourceWA job search log (if applicable), proof of address, and any medical documentation if relevant to your case. Bring originals plus copies.

0 coins

This is perfect, thank you! I'm going to print this out and use it as my checklist.

0 coins

Saving this comment too, very thorough list.

0 coins

Make sure all your documents are organized in a folder or binder. Don't just throw everything in a bag - it looks unprofessional and wastes time during the appointment.

0 coins

Good point about organization. I'll put everything in labeled sections.

0 coins

If you have any questions about what specific documents they need for your particular case, you might want to call ahead. Though getting through can be tough - I know some people have used services like Claimyr to actually reach a human at Washington ESD when the regular phone lines are jammed.

0 coins

I might try that if I think of more questions after reading through everything here.

0 coins

The wait times on the regular phone line are insane right now. Anything that can help get through faster is probably worth it.

0 coins

Also bring a pen! They might have forms for you to fill out at the appointment and you don't want to have to ask to borrow one.

0 coins

Good thinking, adding a pen to my bag right now.

0 coins

question - do they allow phones/electronics in the building? i want to have my phone for any digital documents but some government buildings dont allow them

0 coins

Yes phones are allowed in Washington ESD offices. But definitely have paper copies of everything as backup in case there are connectivity issues.

0 coins

That's a good point about having both digital and paper copies. Better safe than sorry.

0 coins

Don't forget to check the weather and dress appropriately. You might be walking between buildings or waiting outside if they're running behind and the waiting room is full.

0 coins

Thanks for the practical advice! I'll check the forecast before I go.

0 coins

One last tip - write down your questions beforehand. It's easy to forget what you wanted to ask when you're in the appointment and they're going through everything quickly.

0 coins

Great idea. I'll make a list of questions along with my document checklist.

0 coins

Yes! Having everything written down keeps the appointment focused and ensures you get all your questions answered.

Update us after your appointment and let us know how it went! This thread has been really helpful for preparing.

Will do! Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice. Feeling much more prepared now.

Yes please update! I have an appointment coming up next month and this thread has been super informative.
