What documents do I need for Washington ESD unemployment application - first time filing
I'm about to file for unemployment for the first time and I want to make sure I have everything ready before I start the application on the Washington ESD website. I've been working at the same retail job for 2 years but got laid off last week due to store closure. What documents and information do I need to have on hand when I apply? I don't want to start the application and then realize I'm missing something important.

You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license or state ID, and employment history for the last 18 months. Make sure you have your employer's business name, address, and the dates you worked there. Also gather your pay stubs or W-2 forms to verify your wages.

•Thanks! Do I need the exact dollar amounts from my pay stubs or just approximate earnings?

Giovanni Colombo
•Exact amounts are better if you have them, but Washington ESD will verify with your employer anyway. Just be as accurate as possible.

Don't forget your bank account information for direct deposit setup. You'll also need to know the reason you're no longer working - in your case it sounds like a layoff which is good for UI eligibility. Washington ESD will ask for specific details about your separation.

•Should I set up direct deposit right away or can I get paper checks?

Fatima Al-Qasimi
•Direct deposit is faster and more secure. Paper checks take longer and can get lost in the mail.

•I did paper checks at first and regretted it - took an extra week to get my first payment.

The application process can be frustrating if you need to contact Washington ESD for help. I spent hours trying to call them when I had questions about my application. Recently discovered claimyr.com which actually helped me get through to a real person at Washington ESD. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that service legit? I'm always suspicious of third-party things for government stuff.

•Yeah it's legitimate, they just help you get through the phone queue. Saved me tons of time when I needed to talk to someone about my claim status.

make sure you have your alien registration number if you're not a US citizen. also if you worked in multiple states in the last 18 months that gets more complicated

•I'm a US citizen and only worked in Washington so that shouldn't be an issue for me.

One important thing - file your application as soon as possible. Your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you became unemployed. So even if you're still gathering some documents, go ahead and start the process on secure.esd.wa.gov.

•Really? I thought I should wait until I had everything perfect before filing.

Giovanni Colombo
•Nope, timing matters for your benefit year. You can always provide additional documentation later if needed.

•This is so true! I waited two weeks thinking I needed more paperwork and basically lost two weeks of benefits.

The Washington ESD application will also ask about any severance pay or vacation pay you received. Make sure you have those amounts ready too. It might affect when your benefits start.

•I didn't get any severance but I did get paid for unused vacation days. How much detail do they want about that?
0 coins
StarStrider
•Just the total amount and the date you received it. Washington ESD needs to know about any payments from your former employer.

•That's exactly what I'm worried about! Did you eventually get it submitted successfully?

You'll also need to register with WorkSource Washington as part of the process. It's integrated now but just be prepared for that step. You'll create a job search profile and that's where you'll log your work search activities later.

•Is WorkSource registration required immediately or can I do that later?

Fatima Al-Qasimi
•It's part of the initial application process now. You'll need to complete it to finish your UI claim.

•The WorkSource part is actually pretty helpful for job searching once you get used to it.

If you have any military service make sure you have your DD-214 form. Washington ESD needs to see military wages too if you served recently.

Amara Okafor
•No military service for me but good to know for others reading this.

Pro tip: have your phone number and email ready and make sure they're current. Washington ESD will contact you through both if they need additional information about your claim.

•Should I use my personal email or is it okay to use a work email I still have access to?
0 coins
Connor Gallagher
•Definitely use personal email. You don't want to lose access if your work email gets deactivated.

•Learned this the hard way when my work email got shut off and I missed important messages from Washington ESD.

Double check that your Social Security card matches exactly what you put on the application. Any discrepancy can delay your claim approval.

•What if I don't have my physical Social Security card? I know my number but can't find the actual card.
0 coins
Keisha Johnson
•You just need the number for the application, but you might need the physical card later for verification. Check if you have it on your W-2 or tax forms.

I had issues reaching Washington ESD when I needed help with my application. Someone mentioned Claimyr earlier and that actually worked for me too. Got connected to an agent in like 10 minutes instead of calling for hours.

•How much does something like that cost though? I'm already unemployed and watching every penny.

•It was worth it for me to avoid the phone frustration, but I understand budgets are tight when you're not working.

Keep copies of everything you submit! Screenshot the confirmation page when you file your application. Washington ESD systems can be glitchy and you want proof you filed on time.

Amara Okafor
•Good thinking! I'll definitely save screenshots of everything.

•Also write down your confirmation number somewhere safe. You'll need it if you have to call Washington ESD about your application.

The hardest part for me was remembering exact start and end dates for all my jobs in the last 18 months. If you worked multiple jobs or had gaps, write out a timeline before you start the application.

Amara Okafor
•I only had one job but I should still double-check my start date to make sure I have it right.

•Yeah even with one job it's good to verify. Check your first pay stub or any paperwork you kept from when you were hired.

don't stress too much about having every single detail perfect. washington esd will contact you if they need more info. the important thing is to get your application in quickly

•Agreed! I was overthinking it and delayed filing for a week. Just get it started and they'll guide you through any issues.

One last thing - if your employer contests your claim they'll schedule a fact-finding interview. Be prepared to explain the circumstances of your job loss, but since you were laid off due to store closure that should be pretty straightforward.

Amara Okafor
•Why would my employer contest it if they laid me off? That seems weird.
0 coins
Malik Thomas
•Most employers don't contest legitimate layoffs, but it's something to be aware of. Store closure is a clear-cut case for unemployment eligibility.

NeonNebula
•My employer contested mine even though it was obvious I qualified. Some companies just do it automatically. Wasn't a big deal though, just had to explain what happened.

Good luck with your application! The first time filing can seem overwhelming but Washington ESD's online system is pretty user-friendly once you get started. You've got this!

One thing I didn't see mentioned - make sure you have your mailing address correct and up to date. Washington ESD will send important documents by mail including your monetary determination letter that shows your benefit amount. If you've moved recently or your mail delivery is unreliable, consider using a PO box or trusted address where you know you'll receive mail consistently.
