What do I need to file for unemployment - Washington ESD requirements?
I just got laid off from my warehouse job yesterday and I'm pretty lost about what I need to file for unemployment benefits. I've never done this before and the Washington ESD website is confusing me. What documents do I need to gather before I start my application? Do I need my pay stubs, tax forms, or what? Also how long does it usually take to get approved? I'm worried about making rent next month if this takes forever.

You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months. That includes employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. Also gather your most recent pay stub and any separation paperwork your employer gave you.

•Do I need the exact addresses for every job? I worked at a few temp agencies and honestly don't remember all the specific locations.

•Get as close as possible. The temp agency main office address should work, and Washington ESD can verify details during processing.

Make sure you have your alien registration number if you're not a US citizen. Also any military discharge papers if you served in the last 18 months. The Washington ESD application will ask for all this stuff.

•I'm a US citizen so I don't need to worry about that part, but good to know for others.

Here's what you absolutely must have ready: 1) SSN 2) Driver's license or state ID 3) Complete work history for past 18 months including employer names, addresses, phone numbers, dates worked, gross wages earned, and reason you left each job. 4) Bank account info for direct deposit. The process usually takes 2-3 weeks if there are no issues, but can take longer if your claim goes into adjudication.

•What does adjudication mean? That sounds scary.

Declan Ramirez
•Adjudication just means they need to investigate something about your claim before approving it. Could be verifying employment dates, wages, or reason for separation. It's not necessarily bad, just takes extra time.

•I've been stuck in adjudication for 6 weeks now. Can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to find out what's going on.

Pro tip: if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual person. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a video demo showing how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Is that legit? I'm nervous about using third-party services for something this important.

Katherine Hunter
•Yeah it's real. They basically call for you and connect you when they get through. Saved me so much time and frustration.

•How much does it cost though? I'm already broke from being laid off.

DON'T FORGET TO FILE ASAP!!! Benefits are calculated from the week you file, not the week you lost your job. I made this mistake and lost out on a whole week of benefits because I waited thinking I needed to get all my paperwork perfect first.

•Oh crap, I should file today then? Even if I don't have everything organized?

Donna Cline
•YES! File today! You can always provide additional documentation later if they ask for it.

Also be prepared for the job search requirements. You'll need to register with WorkSource and do job search activities each week. Keep detailed records of everything because they can audit your job search log at any time.

•How many jobs do I need to apply to each week?
0 coins
Zadie Patel
•It depends on your situation, but generally 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking, job fairs, etc.

•I hear you. The bureaucracy is ridiculous. But once you get through the initial filing it gets easier.

Ali Anderson
•Yeah it's overwhelming but I guess we just have to push through it.

One more important thing - make sure you understand the difference between being laid off vs fired vs quitting. Washington ESD treats each differently. If you were laid off due to lack of work, you should qualify. If you were fired for misconduct or quit without good cause, you might be disqualified.

Ali Anderson
•I was definitely laid off - they eliminated my position due to budget cuts and gave me paperwork saying so.

Declan Ramirez
•Perfect, that should make your claim straightforward then. Keep that paperwork handy.

I'm still waiting on my claim from 6 weeks ago. Tried calling every day but either get disconnected or told to call back later. This is ridiculous.

•Seriously try Claimyr. That's exactly the situation I was in before I found them. They got me through to someone who could actually help.

•I might have to at this point. I'm desperate.

Quick question - do I need to report my vacation payout when I file? My employer gave me money for unused vacation days.
0 coins
Declan Ramirez
•Yes, you need to report any severance pay, vacation payout, or other compensation when you file. It might affect your benefit start date.

•Ugh, I figured. Thanks for the heads up.

Update: I started my application online and it's asking for my last employer's federal employer ID number. I don't have that - is it on my pay stub somewhere?

Zadie Patel
•It might be on your W-2 or pay stub, but if you can't find it you can skip it and Washington ESD will look it up. Don't let that stop you from filing.

•OK good, I was worried I'd have to call my old HR department.

Been through this process twice now. My advice is to file online late at night or early morning when the system is less busy. During business hours it crashes constantly.

•Good tip! I'll try tonight after dinner.

•I filed at like 6 AM and had no problems with the website.

Does anyone know if I can file if I'm working part-time? I got my hours cut way down but I'm still technically employed.

Declan Ramirez
•Yes, you can file for partial unemployment if your hours were reduced. You'll need to report your earnings each week when you file your weekly claim.

Lucas Parker
•That's a relief. I thought it was all or nothing.

Make sure your direct deposit info is correct! I messed up my account number and it delayed my first payment by two weeks while they sorted it out.

Ali Anderson
•Yikes, I'll double check that. Can't afford any delays.

Gianna Scott
•Yeah triple check the routing and account numbers. One wrong digit and you're screwed.

The whole thing took me about 45 minutes to complete online. Just take your time and don't rush through it. Better to get it right the first time than have to deal with corrections later.

Ali Anderson
•45 minutes doesn't sound too bad. I was expecting it to take hours.

One thing they don't tell you upfront - you have to file a weekly claim every week even if you haven't received your approval yet. I missed doing this and had to backtrack.
0 coins
Ali Anderson
•Wait, what? I have to file weekly claims before I'm even approved?
0 coins
Sydney Torres
•Yeah, you file your initial claim then every week after that you file a weekly claim to certify you're still unemployed and looking for work.
0 coins
Declan Ramirez
•Exactly. The weekly claims are how you actually get paid. Miss a week and you lose that week's benefits.

UPDATE: I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. Turns out my employer disputed my claim and that's why it was stuck. The agent helped me understand what I need to do for the appeal process. Would have saved me weeks of stress if I'd known about this earlier.

•Oh wow, glad you got answers finally! I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems.

Thanks everyone for all the help! I successfully filed my initial claim tonight. The system was actually pretty user-friendly once I had all my info ready. Now I just wait and do my weekly claims. Fingers crossed it goes smoothly!

•Congrats! You should get a confirmation email and then they'll send you info about filing your weekly claims.

•Remember to file your first weekly claim this Sunday even if you haven't heard back about approval yet. Good luck!
