How to apply for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD - confused about the process
I got laid off from my warehouse job last Friday and need to figure out how to apply for unemployment benefits. I've never done this before and the Washington ESD website is confusing me. Do I need to apply right away or can I wait? What documents do I need to have ready? I'm worried I'm going to mess something up and delay my benefits. Can someone walk me through the basic steps?

You should apply as soon as possible since there's a waiting week. Go to esd.wa.gov and look for the 'Apply for Benefits' link. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment information for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic info about where I worked?

Benjamin Kim
•Basic info is fine for the application, but keep your pay stubs handy in case Washington ESD requests them later during adjudication.

You'll want to apply online through the Washington ESD website at esd.wa.gov. You'll need to create a SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account first if you don't have one - that's the login system they use. Have your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment info for the last 18 months ready. Don't wait too long to apply since benefits are backdated to when you file, not when you lost your job.

•Thank you! Do I need pay stubs or just employer contact info?

Mei Wong
•Just employer contact info and dates of employment. Washington ESD will verify wages through their system. Pay stubs aren't required for the initial application.

honestly the online application is pretty straightforward once you get started. took me like 20-30 minutes. hardest part was remembering all my previous employers contact info

GalaxyGlider
•That's reassuring! I was worried it would take hours.

•nah not too bad. just make sure you have all your info ready before you start so you don't have to stop halfway through

The online application usually takes about 30-45 minutes. Make sure you have accurate dates and wages for all jobs in the past year and a half. If you worked for multiple employers, you'll need info for all of them.

•I had two part-time jobs before my full-time warehouse job. Do I need to include those too even if they were over a year ago?
0 coins
Samantha Howard
•Yes, include everything within the 18-month base period. Washington ESD uses that to calculate your benefit amount.

One thing to be aware of - if you have any issues with your application or it gets stuck in adjudication, calling Washington ESD can be a nightmare. I spent weeks trying to get through on the phone lines. If you run into problems, there's actually a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps people get through to Washington ESD agents. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me so much frustration when my claim got held up.

•Good to know about potential calling issues. Hopefully my application goes smoothly but I'll keep that in mind just in case.

•Never heard of Claimyr before but the phone situation at Washington ESD is definitely terrible. Might be worth looking into if you get stuck.

Don't stress too much about the application process. The hardest part is actually getting through to someone at Washington ESD if you have questions. I spent hours on hold trying to reach them when I had issues with my claim. Recently discovered this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps you get through to ESD agents faster. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•How much does that cost? I'm already broke from being laid off.

•It's worth checking out their site for pricing. Honestly saved me so much time and frustration when I needed to talk to someone about my claim status.

Make sure you apply for the right week. Your claim starts the Sunday of the week you apply, not the day you were actually laid off. So if you were laid off Friday like you said, applying this week means your claim starts this past Sunday.
0 coins
Victoria Stark
•Wait, so I should have applied on Sunday? Am I already behind?
0 coins
Ryan Vasquez
•No you're fine! You can still apply now. Just means your benefit year starts from this past Sunday instead of last Sunday.

The Washington ESD system will ask about your reason for separation. Since you were laid off, that should be straightforward. Just be honest about the circumstances - no fault of your own, reduction in force, etc.
0 coins
Victoria Stark
•They said it was due to slow business. Should I mention that specifically?
0 coins
Avery Saint
•Yes, that's perfect. 'Lack of work' or 'reduction in force due to business conditions' are common reasons that typically don't cause adjudication delays.

ugh the washington esd website is such a pain... took me like 3 tries to get through the application without it timing out

Victoria Stark
•Oh no, really? Should I try at a specific time of day?

•Early morning or late evening usually works better. Avoid peak hours like lunch time or right after work.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements before you start collecting benefits. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you have to keep a log. They can audit you at any time and if you don't have proper documentation, they'll make you pay back benefits. Also register with WorkSourceWA immediately after filing - it's required.
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
•Oh wow, I didn't know about the job search log requirement. What counts as a job search activity?
0 coins
Fatima Al-Qasimi
•Job applications, interviews, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews. Has to be documented with employer names, dates, and contact methods. WorkSourceWA has more details on acceptable activities.

After you submit your application, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to actually receive benefits. Don't forget about that part! The first week is usually a waiting week with no payment.
0 coins
Victoria Stark
•How do I file the weekly claims? Is that on the same website?
0 coins
Keith Davidson
•Yes, same site. You'll get login credentials after your application is processed. Weekly claims are due by midnight on Saturday each week.

just applied last month after my restaurant closed permanently. the application itself was fine but then my claim went into adjudication and I haven't heard anything for 3 weeks. apparently they need to verify my reason for separation even though it was obviously not my fault. so frustrating

GalaxyGlider
•That sounds really stressful. Have you tried calling to check on the status?
0 coins
Dylan Campbell
•tried calling dozens of times, either get busy signal or sit on hold for hours then get disconnected. thinking about trying that claimyr thing someone mentioned

•Definitely try Claimyr if you're having phone issues. That's exactly the situation I used it for when my claim was stuck in adjudication.

Important tip: apply on Sunday evenings or very early Monday mornings if possible. The system is less busy and you're more likely to get through without technical issues. Also screenshot everything as you go through the application process.

•Great advice about timing and screenshots. Didn't think about system traffic patterns.

•Yeah, weekday afternoons are the worst. System crashes and error messages constantly. Early mornings or late evenings work best.

Don't forget you can't collect benefits for the first week (waiting week) and you have to file weekly claims every week to keep getting paid. Missing even one weekly claim filing can mess up your whole claim.
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
•When do I file the weekly claims? Is there a specific day?
0 coins
Dmitry Sokolov
•You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. I always do mine Sunday mornings. Don't wait until the last minute - deadline is Saturday night.

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource too. It's required as part of the job search requirements. They'll probably tell you about this after your claim is approved.
0 coins
Victoria Stark
•What's WorkSource? Is that different from applying for unemployment?
0 coins
Ezra Bates
•It's Washington's job search system. You have to register there and do job search activities to keep getting benefits. Part of the work search requirements.

been collecting UI for 2 months now and the process is pretty routine once you get started. biggest thing is being honest about everything. they cross-check with employers and other agencies so don't try to hide anything
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
•That makes sense. Better to be upfront about everything from the beginning.

Ava Martinez
•exactly. if there's anything complicated about why you lost your job, better to over-explain than under-explain

I'm in the same boat - got laid off two weeks ago and still waiting for my claim to be approved. The adjudication process is taking forever. At least you're getting started sooner than I did.

Victoria Stark
•How long is adjudication supposed to take? I'm already worried about paying rent next month.

•They say 3-6 weeks but mine's been pending for almost a month. Trying to get through to someone to check on it but the phone lines are always busy.

The Washington ESD website has a pretty good tutorial that walks through the application step by step. I'd recommend going through that first before you actually apply. Also make sure you apply in the right week - there are specific rules about when your claim can start.
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
•I'll definitely check out the tutorial. What do you mean about applying in the right week?
0 coins
Miguel Ramos
•Your claim effective date is based on when you file, and there are rules about backdating. Generally you want to file in the week after you lose your job, not weeks later.

Megan D'Acosta
That's exactly the situation where Claimyr helped me. I was stuck in adjudication for weeks and couldn't get through to ask about my claim status. Used their service and finally got connected to an ESD agent who explained what was holding up my claim.

Make sure your direct deposit info is correct when you apply. If there are any issues with payments, it's much harder to fix later. Also keep copies of everything you submit.

•Good point about direct deposit. I'll double check my bank account info.

Pro tip: if you worked in multiple states recently, you might be able to file in the state where you earned the most wages. Washington has agreements with other states for this. Could potentially get you higher benefits.
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
•I've only worked in Washington so that shouldn't be an issue for me, but good to know.
0 coins
Connor Gallagher
•Yeah if you've been in Washington the whole time it's straightforward. The multi-state thing only helps people who moved recently.

just want to add that you should apply even if you're not sure you qualify. let washington esd make that determination. I thought I wouldn't qualify because of my specific situation but ended up getting approved

•That's encouraging. I'm pretty sure I qualify but it's good to know they'll figure it out.

One more thing - if you get any kind of severance pay or vacation payout, make sure to report it correctly. Those can affect when your benefits start. The application will ask about all this stuff.
0 coins
GalaxyGlider
•I did get a small severance. I'll make sure to report that accurately.

•Good. It might delay when your benefits kick in but it's better to be honest upfront than deal with problems later.

Last thing - once you file your claim, you should get a determination letter in the mail within a week or two. That will tell you if you're approved and how much your weekly benefit will be. Don't panic if it takes a little while to arrive.

After you submit your application, you should get a confirmation number. Write that down! You might need it if you have to call about your claim later.

Marcus Williams
•Smart thinking. Having that reference number makes it easier for ESD agents to look up your claim.
