What days can you file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD?
I just got laid off from my job last Friday and need to file for unemployment benefits. I've been looking at the Washington ESD website but I'm confused about when I can actually submit my initial claim. Can I file on weekends or do I have to wait until Monday? Also, once I get approved, what days of the week am I supposed to file my weekly claims? I don't want to mess this up and delay my benefits.

You can file your initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD any day of the week, including weekends. The online system is available 24/7 for new applications. However, for your weekly claims once you're approved, you'll need to file every Sunday for the previous week. The weekly claim filing window is typically Sunday through Saturday night.

•Thanks! So I can start my application right now even though it's Saturday? That's a relief.

•Yes, but keep in mind that if you need to speak with someone at Washington ESD about your claim, their phone lines are only open Monday through Friday during business hours.

I filed mine on a Sunday night and it went through fine. The weekly claims thing is important though - you have to file every Sunday for the week that just ended. If you miss the Sunday deadline, you might have issues getting paid for that week.

•What happens if I'm out of town on a Sunday and can't file? Can I file early or late?

•You can file your weekly claim anytime from Sunday through the following Saturday, but Sunday is recommended to avoid delays. Just don't skip a week entirely.

Actually had a nightmare trying to get through to Washington ESD when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Spent weeks calling during their business hours and could never get through. Finally used Claimyr.com to get connected to an agent - they have this system that calls you back when an agent is available. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Game changer for actually reaching someone.

•Never heard of that service. Did they charge you anything?

Vanessa Figueroa
•They do charge a fee but it was worth it to finally talk to a real person about my claim status. Way better than spending hours redialing the main number.

•Good to know there are options if I run into problems. Hopefully my claim goes smoothly though.

washington esd system is trash tbh, filed my claim three weeks ago and still waiting for them to process it. but yeah you can file anytime online

•Three weeks sounds like your claim might be in adjudication. Have you checked your account for any outstanding issues or documents they need?

Sadie Benitez
•checked everything, no issues showing up. just says 'processing' forever

The 24/7 filing is convenient but I'd recommend filing during business hours if possible, especially for your initial claim. If there are any technical issues or questions, at least the support lines are open. I filed mine at 2 AM and ran into a glitch that took days to resolve because I had to wait for business hours to get help.

•That's a good point. Maybe I'll wait until Monday morning to be safe.

•I disagree - I've filed plenty of claims late at night with no issues. The system works fine outside business hours.

•You're probably right for most people. I might have just had bad luck with timing.

Just make sure you have all your documentation ready before you start - Social Security card, employment history for the last 18 months, bank info for direct deposit. The application can time out if you take too long gathering documents.

•How long does the application usually take to complete?

Noland Curtis
•About 30-45 minutes if you have everything ready. The employment history section takes the longest.

Remember that your weekly claims are for the week ENDING on Saturday. So when you file on Sunday, you're reporting for Monday through Saturday of the previous week. This confused me at first and I was reporting the wrong dates.
0 coins
Sasha Reese
•That is confusing! So if I file this Sunday, I'd be reporting for last Monday through last Saturday?
0 coins
Isabel Vega
•Exactly. The system will show you the specific dates when you log in to file your weekly claim.

•This tripped me up too. I kept thinking I was filing for the upcoming week, not the week that just ended.

Does anyone know if the system goes down for maintenance on certain days? I've heard some states have scheduled downtime.

Muhammad Hobbs
•Washington ESD occasionally has scheduled maintenance but they usually post notices on their website. It's rare though - maybe once or twice a year for major updates.

•Good to know, thanks. I was worried about trying to file right at the deadline and having the system be down.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit when you file your initial claim. Paper checks take forever and can get lost in the mail. I learned this the hard way.

Sasha Reese
•Definitely planning on direct deposit. How long after approval do the first payments usually come?
0 coins
Louisa Ramirez
•If there are no issues with your claim, usually 1-2 weeks after your first weekly claim is processed.

Make sure you understand the waiting week too. In Washington, there's a one-week waiting period before you can receive benefits, so your first payable week is actually your second week of unemployment.

Sasha Reese
•Wait, so even if I get approved quickly, I won't get paid for my first week of being unemployed?
0 coins
TommyKapitz
•That's right. The first week serves as a waiting period. You still need to file for it, but you won't receive payment for that week.

•This is one of the most frustrating parts of the system. You're already stressed about money and then they make you wait an extra week.

Also remember that you need to be actively looking for work and keeping track of your job search activities. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week once you start receiving benefits.

Sasha Reese
•Do I need to start the job search right away or only after I'm approved?
0 coins
Payton Black
•You should start looking for work immediately. The job search requirement begins with your first claimed week, even if you haven't received payment yet.

I had issues with my claim getting held up for identity verification. Even though I could file online anytime, getting that resolved required calling during business hours. Took me three tries using Claimyr to finally reach an agent who could help me submit the right documents.

Sasha Reese
•What kind of identity verification did they need?

Harold Oh
•Driver's license, Social Security card, and proof of employment. The tricky part was getting them submitted in the right format through their system.

Quick question - if I was terminated on a Friday, do I file my claim starting that same week or the following week?
0 coins
Muhammad Hobbs
•You can file your initial claim right away, but your benefit year starts with the week you became unemployed. So if you were terminated Friday, that week counts as your first week of unemployment.

Amun-Ra Azra
•Thanks, that makes sense. Better to get the process started as soon as possible.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any vacation pay or severance, that might affect when your benefits start. I had two weeks of severance and couldn't claim benefits until after that period ended.

Sasha Reese
•I don't have any severance, just my final paycheck. Should be okay then?
0 coins
Summer Green
•Your final paycheck for work already performed shouldn't affect your claim. It's only future-dated pay like severance or vacation that can delay benefits.

The mobile app works pretty well for filing weekly claims if you're ever away from a computer. Just search for 'Washington ESD' in your app store.

•Good to know! I travel sometimes for family stuff so that'll be helpful.

•The app is okay but I still prefer the full website. Easier to see all the details and make sure I'm answering questions correctly.

Remember to keep records of everything - when you filed, confirmation numbers, any correspondence from Washington ESD. If there are ever disputes or issues, having documentation is crucial.

Sasha Reese
•Should I print everything out or are screenshots sufficient?

Darcy Moore
•Screenshots are usually fine, but I like to print important stuff like approval notices. Just in case something happens to my computer.

Last thing - don't panic if your claim goes into adjudication. It's pretty common and doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem. They just need to review certain aspects of your employment separation.

Sasha Reese
•How long does adjudication usually take?

•Can vary widely. Anywhere from a few days to several weeks depending on the complexity. The key is staying on top of any requests for additional information.

•If you end up in adjudication and need to talk to someone, that Claimyr service mentioned earlier is really helpful. Used it myself when my claim was stuck for a month.

Thanks everyone for all this helpful info! I'm feeling much more confident about filing now. Sounds like I can go ahead and submit my initial claim this weekend, then make sure to file my weekly claims every Sunday once I'm approved. Really appreciate the heads up about the waiting week and the job search requirements - I would have been caught off guard by those. Going to get all my documents together and file tomorrow morning.
