Washington ESD weekly certification day - what day do i certify for unemployment?

I just got approved for benefits last week and I'm confused about when exactly I'm supposed to certify for my weekly claims. My account doesn't show a specific day or time. I know I need to do it every week but I can't figure out what day of the week I'm supposed to log in and complete the certification. Does Washington ESD assign specific days or can I do it any day? Really don't want to mess this up and miss a payment.

You can certify any day of the week once your claim week opens up. Most people certify on Sundays since that's traditionally when the new claim week starts, but Washington ESD doesn't require a specific day. Just make sure you certify before the deadline which is usually the Saturday after your claim week ends.

Thanks! So I can do it whenever during the week as long as it's before Saturday?

0 coins

Exactly. Just don't wait until the last minute because the system can get slow on Saturdays.

I've been certifying every Sunday morning for 8 months now. It's become part of my routine - coffee, newspaper, then log into my Washington ESD account and knock out the weekly claim. Takes maybe 5-10 minutes if you have all your job search activities ready to enter.

0 coins

Do you have any trouble getting into the system on Sundays? I heard it can be really slow.

0 coins

Early Sunday morning is usually fine, like 7-8am. It's when everyone tries to do it Sunday night that it gets jammed up.

Actually had this same confusion when I first started. The key thing is understanding that your claim week runs Sunday to Saturday, and you certify FOR that week after it's over. So you're always certifying for the previous week's activities. You can certify starting the Sunday after your claim week ends.

0 coins

Oh that makes more sense! So I'm reporting on what happened the week before, not the current week.

0 coins

Right, and if you worked any hours or had any income during that claim week, make sure you report it accurately or you could get hit with an overpayment later.

Honestly I got so frustrated trying to get through to Washington ESD to ask this exact question. Spent hours on hold multiple times just to get hung up on. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me through to a real person at Washington ESD in like 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Worth checking out if you need to talk to someone about your certification schedule or any other claim issues.

0 coins

Never heard of that but honestly anything that helps get through to ESD sounds amazing. The phone system is absolutely terrible.

0 coins

Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind if I run into issues.

Just a heads up - some people think you HAVE to certify on Sunday but that's not true. I usually do mine on Tuesday or Wednesday when I have more time to double-check my job search entries. As long as you do it before the Saturday deadline you're good.

0 coins

Same here, I do mine midweek. Less traffic on the website too.

0 coins

Good to know I have flexibility with the timing!

Make sure you have your job search log ready before you start certifying. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week and you need to enter the details during certification. Company names, dates, method of contact, etc. Don't try to wing it or make stuff up - they do audit these.

0 coins

I've been keeping a spreadsheet with all my job applications and networking activities. Should that cover it?

0 coins

Perfect! That's exactly what you need. Just make sure you have at least 3 qualifying activities for each week you're certifying for.

0 coins

What counts as a qualifying job search activity? I've been doing online applications but not sure what else counts.

Pro tip: Set up a weekly reminder on your phone or calendar. I use Sunday at 9am as my reminder to certify. Helps avoid accidentally missing a week and having to deal with the hassle of reactivating your claim later.

0 coins

That's smart! I'll set one up right now.

0 coins

I learned this the hard way - missed one week and had to call Washington ESD to reactivate. Was a nightmare trying to get through.

The Washington ESD website usually sends you an email reminder when it's time to certify, but don't rely on it completely. Sometimes those emails go to spam or just don't send. Better to keep track yourself.

0 coins

I haven't gotten any emails yet. Should I be worried?

0 coins

Check your spam folder first, and make sure your email address is correct in your ESD account. You can update it through the secure messaging system if needed.

Been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and both times it took me a few weeks to get into a good rhythm with the weekly certifications. Don't stress too much about getting everything perfect right away - you'll figure out what works best for your schedule.

0 coins

Thanks for the reassurance! It's all pretty overwhelming at first.

0 coins

Definitely overwhelming but it becomes routine pretty quick. The job search requirements are probably the most time-consuming part.

0 coins

Quick question - if I certify on Sunday for the previous week, when do I actually get paid? Is it right away or does it take a few days?

0 coins

Usually takes 1-2 business days after you certify, assuming there are no issues with your claim. Direct deposit is faster than debit card.

0 coins

Got it, thanks! I set up direct deposit so hopefully it'll be quick.

0 coins

WARNING: Do NOT certify late! I was 2 days late one time and my claim got deactivated. Had to go through the whole reactivation process which took forever. Washington ESD is not forgiving about deadlines.

0 coins

Yikes! Thanks for the warning. I'll definitely make sure to do it on time every week.

0 coins

How late is too late? Like if I do it Saturday night am I cutting it too close?

0 coins

Saturday night should be fine but I wouldn't risk it. The deadline is 11:59 PM on Saturday but the website sometimes crashes from high traffic.

Another Claimyr success story here - I used them when I couldn't figure out why my weekly claims weren't processing properly. Got connected to a Washington ESD rep who walked me through the whole certification process step by step. Super helpful and way better than trying to navigate their phone maze.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? Seems like it could be expensive.

0 coins

Actually pretty reasonable considering the time and frustration it saves. Check out their site for details - claimyr.com. They have different options depending on what you need help with.

0 coins

I always double-check my entries before submitting. Once you hit submit, you can't go back and change anything for that week. Better to take an extra minute to review than realize you made a mistake later.

0 coins

Good point! I'm definitely going to be extra careful with my first few certifications.

0 coins

Same here. I made a typo in a company name once and stressed about it for weeks thinking it would cause problems.

0 coins

The mobile app version of the Washington ESD site works pretty well for weekly certification if you prefer doing it on your phone. Sometimes easier than trying to use a computer, especially if you're tracking your job search activities on your phone anyway.

0 coins

I didn't know there was a mobile version! That would be way more convenient for me.

0 coins

Just go to the regular ESD website on your phone browser - it should automatically show you the mobile-friendly version.

0 coins

One more thing - if you're on standby status (like if you're temporarily laid off but expect to return to work), your certification process might be slightly different. Make sure you understand your specific claim type requirements.

0 coins

I'm on regular unemployment, not standby. But good to know there are different types!

0 coins

Yeah standby claims have different job search requirements. Regular UI claims need the full 3 job search activities per week.

0 coins

Honestly the hardest part isn't knowing when to certify - it's keeping up with the job search requirements week after week. Make sure you're staying on top of that because they can audit your claim at any time and ask for proof of your job search activities.

0 coins

I've been keeping detailed records of everything I do. Hopefully that's enough!

0 coins

That's perfect. Screenshots of online applications, business cards from networking events, emails from recruiters - keep it all organized.

0 coins

If anyone else is struggling to get through to Washington ESD for certification questions, definitely try Claimyr. I was stuck in phone hell for days trying to ask about my claim status and they got me connected in minutes. Really takes the stress out of dealing with the bureaucracy.

0 coins

I might have to try that. Spent 3 hours on hold yesterday just to get disconnected at the end.

0 coins

Thanks for all the help everyone! I feel much more confident about the certification process now.
