How to know if unemployment was approved - Washington ESD claim status confusion
I submitted my unemployment application through Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm going crazy trying to figure out if it got approved or not. I can log into my account but the status just says 'claim processed' which doesn't really tell me anything useful. I tried calling but after sitting on hold for 2 hours I got disconnected. Is there supposed to be some kind of approval letter or email? My first weekly claim is due this Sunday and I don't want to mess anything up if my claim isn't actually approved yet. How did you guys know when your unemployment got approved?

Check your SecureAccess Washington account under 'Correspondence' - that's where they put important notices. Also look for any monetary determination letter that shows your benefit amount.

•I don't see any correspondence section in my account, just the weekly claim filing area and payment history which is empty

•Try logging out completely and back in, sometimes the interface is glitchy. The correspondence tab should be there if your claim is fully processed.

If your claim was approved you should have received a monetary determination in your online account within 7-10 business days. This letter tells you your weekly benefit amount and how many weeks you're eligible for. Without this letter, your claim might still be under review.

•That makes sense, I haven't seen anything like that yet. Should I be worried that it's taking this long?

•Not necessarily, Washington ESD has been slower than usual lately. But if you don't see anything by day 14, definitely try to get through to them by phone.

I had the same problem trying to reach Washington ESD by phone - spent literally hours on hold just to get hung up on. Finally found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ and their website is claimyr.com. Saved me so much time and frustration.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems too good to be true honestly

•It's actually pretty reasonable considering how much time it saves. Way better than burning whole days trying to get through on your own.

•I might have to try this if I can't figure out my claim status soon. Thanks for the tip!

WASHINGTON ESD IS THE WORST. I've been waiting 3 WEEKS just to find out if my claim is approved and every time I call I get the runaround. Their online system is confusing and doesn't tell you anything useful. How is this acceptable in 2025??

•I feel your pain, the whole system is outdated and frustrating

•I get the frustration but they are dealing with high volumes. The key is understanding what to look for in your account to track progress.

Here's what to look for: 1) Monetary determination letter showing your benefit amount 2) Any requests for additional information or documents 3) Your claim status should change from 'processed' to 'active' once approved 4) You'll be able to file weekly claims without getting error messages. If none of these have happened after 2 weeks, your claim likely needs manual review.

•This is super helpful! My status still says 'processed' so maybe that's why I'm confused. When does it change to 'active'?

Kiara Greene
•Usually within 1-2 days after the monetary determination is issued. The system has to finalize all the calculations first.

•What if you get the monetary determination but status stays at 'processed'? That happened to my brother

Just want to add - don't skip filing your weekly claims even if you're not sure about approval status. You can always file them and if there's an issue, Washington ESD will let you know. It's worse to miss filing deadlines.

•Good point, I was worried about filing if I wasn't approved yet but you're right about the deadlines

•Yeah I made that mistake my first time - missed two weeks of claims because I was waiting for 'confirmation' that never came

The easiest way is to just try filing your weekly claim. If your account lets you complete it without errors, your claim is approved. If you get blocked or error messages, then something needs to be resolved first.

Elin Robinson
•That's actually a really practical way to test it, thanks!

•This worked for me too - the system won't let you file if there are issues with your claim

I'm in the exact same situation! Filed 8 days ago and still no clear answer. The waiting is killing me because I need to know for budgeting purposes.

•Will do! Thinking about trying that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier

One more thing - check your email including spam folder. Washington ESD sometimes sends notifications there that people miss. Also make sure your contact info is updated in your account.

•Just checked spam folder and found nothing, but good suggestion. My contact info looks correct in the system.

•I almost missed an important email from them because it went to spam. Always worth checking!

The monetary determination letter is key - it will show your weekly benefit amount, total available benefits, and benefit year dates. Without this document, your claim isn't fully approved even if the status looks processed.

•Still haven't received this letter. Should I be able to see it online or does it only come by mail?

Christian Burns
•It should appear in your online account first, then you might get a paper copy by mail depending on your preferences

When I was dealing with this same issue, I used Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD and found out my claim was stuck because they needed to verify my identity. The agent was able to tell me exactly what documents to upload. Saved me weeks of wondering.

Elin Robinson
•That's exactly what I'm worried about - that something is stuck and I don't know it. How quickly did they get you connected?

Sasha Reese
•About 10-15 minutes total. Way faster than the 3+ hours I wasted trying to call myself. Check out their demo video to see how it works.

honestly the whole system is confusing, took me forever to figure out where everything was in my account when I first filed

•Right? The interface is not intuitive at all

If you're really anxious about it, the surest way is to call and ask an agent directly. Yes the wait times are terrible but at least you'll get a definitive answer about your claim status.

•Yeah that's the main problem with their phone system. Maybe try during less busy times like early morning or late afternoon?

Pro tip: if you can successfully file your first weekly claim without any error messages, your initial claim was approved. The system won't let you file ongoing claims if your initial application wasn't approved first.

•This makes a lot of sense! I'm going to try filing this Sunday and see what happens

Vanessa Figueroa
•Exactly! The weekly claim filing is basically the confirmation that everything went through properly

I remember being so stressed about this same thing. Turns out my claim was approved but I just didn't know where to look for the confirmation. The system should email you when the monetary determination is ready.

•No problem! The waiting period is definitely the most stressful part of the whole process

Last resort if nothing else works - try reaching out through the 'Ask a Question' feature in your online account. Takes longer than a phone call but sometimes you get better answers that way.
0 coins
Elin Robinson
•I didn't even know that feature existed! Where do I find it in the account?

Sadie Benitez
•Should be under the Help or Contact section when you log in. Response time is usually 3-5 business days.

The whole approval process is way more confusing than it needs to be. You'd think they'd just send a clear 'APPROVED' or 'DENIED' message but instead you have to piece it together from different parts of your account.

Elin Robinson
•Exactly! A simple status update would make this so much easier for everyone

•Will do! Planning to try filing my weekly claim this weekend and see if that gives me any clarity. Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice!
