How to know if I was approved for unemployment Washington ESD claim status
I filed my Washington ESD unemployment claim about 10 days ago and I'm not sure how to tell if it got approved or not. I can log into my account but it's confusing what all the different statuses mean. There's something about 'pending' and 'adjudication' but I don't know what that means for my situation. Do they send you a letter or email when you're approved? I tried calling but the phone lines are always busy. My last job ended because of layoffs so I think I should qualify but I'm worried something went wrong with my application.

Check your online account on the Washington ESD website. Once you log in, look for the 'Claim Status' section. If it says 'Valid' or 'Payable' that means you're approved. If it says 'Pending' or 'Adjudication in Progress' then they're still reviewing your claim.

•Thanks! I see it says 'Pending' right now. How long does that usually take to change?

•Usually 1-3 weeks depending on how busy they are. If there are no issues with your claim it should be faster.

They'll also send you a determination letter in the mail once they make a decision. But honestly the online account updates faster than the mail usually.

•Good to know, I'll keep checking online then.

•Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending! That's super important.

I had the same problem trying to get through to Washington ESD on the phone. Spent hours calling and either got busy signals or got disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr that calls for you and connects you to an agent. Saved me so much time and frustration. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before, does it actually work? How much does it cost?

•Yeah it really works! I was able to get my claim status clarified in like 20 minutes instead of spending all day trying to call. They don't require any personal info upfront which I liked.

•Interesting, might have to try that if I can't get through myself.

When you log into your Washington ESD account, also check the 'Correspondence' section. They post important notices there before they mail them out. Look for anything titled 'Determination' or 'Eligibility Notice' - those will tell you if you're approved or denied.

•Oh I didn't know about the correspondence section! I'll check that right now.

•Yes this is really important! I missed an important notice because I only checked my claim status page.

•I know right? It's like they designed it to be as confusing as possible.

•Yeah the interface could definitely be better but once you learn where things are it's not too bad.

Also make sure you understand the difference between being approved for unemployment and actually getting paid. Even if you're approved, you might have a waiting week or other issues that delay payment. The key statuses to look for are: Valid/Payable = approved, Pending = under review, Disqualified = denied.

•What's a waiting week? Is that something I need to worry about?

Malik Robinson
•Washington eliminated the waiting week in 2023, so you don't have to worry about that anymore. But there can still be other delays like if they need to verify your identity or work history.

•Oh good, I was worried about that waiting week thing from when my friend filed a few years ago.

Don't forget you can also check your payment history once you start getting benefits. That's another way to confirm everything is working properly.

•Where do I find the payment history section?

GalaxyGlider
•It should be under 'Payment Information' or 'Benefit Payment History' in your account menu.

I remember being so stressed about this same thing when I first filed. The uncertainty is the worst part! But once you get that first approval it's such a relief.

•Yeah I'm definitely stressed about it. Just want to know one way or the other.

•Hang in there! Most people who qualify do get approved, especially for layoffs.

Pro tip: take screenshots of your claim status and any important notices. I had an issue once where something disappeared from my account and having screenshots helped when I had to call Washington ESD.

•That's smart, I'll start doing that.

•Good advice! I always screenshot everything now after having problems before.

If you're really worried about your claim status and can't get through by phone, you might want to try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I used them last month when I had an adjudication issue and needed to talk to someone at Washington ESD urgently. Worked way better than trying to call myself.

•How long did it take them to connect you?

•About 15 minutes or so. Way faster than the hours I spent trying to call on my own.

Also check if you have any 'fact finding' questionnaires or other tasks that need to be completed. Sometimes your claim stays pending because there's something you need to do.

•How do I check for those?

•Look for a 'To Do' list or 'Required Actions' section in your account. It should show if there's anything you need to submit.

The mail can be really slow too so don't rely on that. I got my determination letter like 2 weeks after I could already see the approval online.

Make sure you're continuing to file your weekly claims! Even if your initial claim is still pending, you need to keep certifying or you might lose benefits for those weeks.

Javier Morales
•Yes someone else mentioned that too. I've been doing that thankfully.

Mateo Martinez
•That's the most important thing - keep filing those weekly claims no matter what!

I was in the same boat a few months ago. The waiting is terrible but most layoff claims get approved pretty quickly once they process them. Just keep checking your account every day or two.

If you do get denied for some reason, don't panic! You can appeal the decision. But since you were laid off you should be fine.

Javier Morales
•Hopefully it won't come to that but good to know I have options.

StarStrider
•Yeah appeals aren't too complicated if you need to do one. But layoffs are usually straightforward approvals.

One more thing - make sure your direct deposit info is set up correctly if you want to get paid faster. Otherwise they'll send you a debit card which takes longer.

Javier Morales
•I think I set that up but I'll double check. Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone!

Just to add to what others said about Claimyr - I was skeptical at first but it really does work. When I had questions about my claim status that I couldn't figure out online, they got me connected to someone at Washington ESD who could explain everything. Worth it for the peace of mind.

The good news is that since you were laid off, you should definitely qualify for benefits. Most of the time when claims get denied it's for things like quitting without good cause or getting fired for misconduct.
