How to fix ineligible week unemployment Washington ESD - need help fast
I've been getting unemployment for 2 months but this week when I filed my weekly claim it came back as 'ineligible week' and I have no idea why. I answered all the questions the same as usual - still looking for work, didn't work or earn any money, available for work. My claim status still shows active but this one week is marked ineligible. Has anyone dealt with this before? I really need to figure out how to fix this because I can't afford to miss a week of benefits.

There are several reasons Washington ESD marks a week ineligible. Did you answer any questions differently this week? Sometimes it's something small like answering the 'able and available' question wrong or reporting you weren't actively looking for work that week.

•I don't think I answered anything different but maybe I clicked the wrong thing by accident? Is there a way to see exactly why it was marked ineligible?

•Check your correspondence inbox on the Washington ESD website. They usually send a determination letter explaining the reason for ineligibility.

this happened to me too last month! turned out I had answered that I wasnt available for work one of the days because I was sick. even though I was still looking for jobs online they marked the whole week ineligible

•Oh no, I might have done something like that. How did you fix it?

•I had to call them and explain what happened. took forever to get through though

Most common reasons for ineligible weeks are: 1) Not being able and available for work all 7 days, 2) Not actively seeking work, 3) Refusing suitable work, 4) Working or earning money without reporting it properly, 5) Having a disqualifying separation issue. You can appeal an ineligible week determination within 30 days if you believe it's incorrect.

•Thank you for the detailed list! I definitely didn't refuse work or earn money. Maybe it was the able and available thing.

•Wait, you have to be available ALL 7 days? I thought weekends didn't count since most places don't hire on weekends.

•Yes, you must be able and available for work all 7 days of the week you're claiming. Weekends absolutely count - many retail, restaurant, and service jobs require weekend availability.

I had a similar issue and couldn't get through to Washington ESD on the phone for weeks. Finally used Claimyr to get connected to an agent who helped me understand what went wrong with my weekly claim. The video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ shows exactly how it works - basically they call Washington ESD for you and get you connected when an agent is available. Saved me hours of calling.

•Never heard of Claimyr before but I'm desperate at this point. How much does it cost?

•Check their website at claimyr.com for details. For me it was worth it just to avoid the endless busy signals and getting hung up on.

•Sounds too good to be true. Why would they be able to get through when we can't?

THE WASHINGTON ESD PHONE SYSTEM IS A NIGHTMARE. I've been trying to call for THREE WEEKS about my ineligible week and either get busy signal or they hang up after 2 hours on hold. This is ridiculous!

•Same here, it's impossible to reach anyone

•This is exactly why I'm so frustrated. I need to talk to someone but can't get through.

Check if you have any outstanding issues on your claim that might have triggered the ineligible week. Sometimes Washington ESD will mark weeks ineligible if there's a pending adjudication or if they need additional information from you.

•Good point, I'll check my account for any alerts or pending issues.

You might be able to fix this online if it was just a mistake in how you answered the weekly claim questions. Log into your Washington ESD account and see if there's an option to restart or correct your weekly claim for that week.

•I looked but don't see any option to change my answers after submitting. Is there a specific section I should look in?

•Unfortunately once you submit a weekly claim you usually can't change it online. You'll need to contact Washington ESD to correct it.

I work at WorkSource and see this issue frequently. Often it's because people don't understand that being 'available for work' means you must be ready to accept any suitable job offer immediately. If you have any restrictions on your availability (can't work certain days, only certain hours, transportation issues) that might trigger an ineligible week.

•I didn't know it was that strict! I do have some limitations on hours because of childcare but I've been getting benefits for months.

•Childcare issues can sometimes be worked around if you're actively seeking solutions, but Washington ESD is very strict about availability requirements. You should discuss this specific situation with an agent.

ugh this whole system is so confusing. I got an ineligible week last year and never figured out why. Just gave up trying to call.

•You should have appealed it! Even if it was just one week.

If you think the ineligible week determination is wrong, you absolutely should appeal it. The appeal form is on the Washington ESD website and you have 30 days from the date of the determination. Don't just let it go - these things can affect your benefit year total.

•How long does the appeal process take? I really can't afford to wait months for this to be resolved.

Tony Brooks
•Appeals can take 4-8 weeks typically, but if you win you'll get back pay for the week. Still worth filing even if it takes time.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even with the ineligible week issue. Don't let other weeks become ineligible because you're dealing with this problem.

•Good reminder, thank you. I was so focused on this one week I almost forgot to file for this week.

I had success with Claimyr when I had an adjudication issue that was making my weeks ineligible. They got me connected to a Washington ESD agent who was able to see exactly what was causing the problem and walk me through fixing it. Much better than trying to navigate the phone system yourself.

Whatever you do, don't ignore this. Ineligible weeks can sometimes trigger a review of your entire claim if there's a pattern. Get it sorted out ASAP.

Sometimes the issue is as simple as a system glitch. I had a week marked ineligible that turned out to be a processing error on Washington ESD's end. The agent fixed it in like 5 minutes once I finally got through.

Document everything - when you filed, what you answered, any correspondence you receive. If this goes to appeal or if there are more issues, you'll need a paper trail.

Update us when you get this resolved! I'm dealing with something similar and want to know what worked for you.

•Will do! I'm going to try calling first thing Monday morning, and if that doesn't work I'll look into Claimyr.
