Washington ESD showing 'ineligible week' - what does this mean for my unemployment claim?
I've been filing my weekly claims regularly but this week when I checked my account it shows 'ineligible week' for last week's claim. I have no idea what this means or why it happened. I didn't do anything different - reported my job search activities like always and marked that I was available for work. Has anyone seen this before? Should I be worried about my benefits getting cut off?

An ineligible week usually means something in your weekly claim flagged their system. Could be you reported earnings that were too high, missed reporting job contacts, or answered one of the eligibility questions wrong. Check your claim details to see if there's a specific reason listed.

•I looked but it doesn't give any specific reason, just says 'ineligible week' with no explanation. This is so frustrating.

•Same thing happened to me last month. Turned out I accidentally said I wasn't available for work when I meant to say I was. Had to call to get it fixed.

There are several reasons Washington ESD marks a week ineligible. Most common ones are: reporting earnings over your weekly benefit amount, not meeting job search requirements, indicating you weren't available for work, or having a disqualifying separation issue from a previous employer come up. You'll need to contact them to find out the specific reason and how to resolve it.

•I've been trying to call for two days but keep getting disconnected after waiting on hold forever. Is there another way to find out what happened?

•You can try sending a secure message through your online account, but that usually takes several days for a response. Calling is still the fastest way to get answers about claim issues.

I had the same problem trying to reach Washington ESD about an ineligible week. Spent hours calling with no luck until someone told me about Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you get through to an actual ESD agent instead of getting stuck in phone tree hell. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much time and frustration.

•Is that legitimate? I'm always wary of third-party services when it comes to government stuff.

•Yeah I was skeptical too but they just help you navigate the phone system to reach a real person. You still talk directly to the ESD agent yourself. Way better than calling hundreds of times on your own.

•At this point I'm willing to try anything. The phone system is impossible.

ineligible week could also mean you had a holiday or something where you couldn't work. did you report any days you weren't available?
0 coins
Paolo Rizzo
•No, I marked that I was available all seven days. I'm really confused about what triggered this.

•Sometimes their system glitches too. I've seen people get ineligible weeks that were later corrected once they spoke to an agent.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN!!! I've been dealing with random ineligible weeks for months and they can never explain why it happens. It's like they just randomly decide to stop paying people and make us jump through hoops to prove we deserve benefits we already qualified for. This whole system needs to be scrapped and rebuilt from scratch.

•I feel your frustration but getting angry won't solve the problem. OP still needs to figure out what happened with their specific week.

•You're right, I'm just so fed up with this system. OP - definitely try to get through to someone on the phone to sort this out before it affects more weeks.

Check if you reported any work or earnings for that week. Even small amounts can make you ineligible if they exceed your partial benefit threshold. Also make sure you completed the required number of job search activities.

•I didn't work at all that week and I logged my three job search activities like always. This is so confusing.

•If your job search activities weren't detailed enough or didn't meet their requirements, that could trigger an ineligible week. They're pretty strict about the specifics.

Another possibility is that you have a pending adjudication issue that just got processed. Sometimes they'll mark weeks as ineligible retroactively if there's a disqualification from a previous employer or eligibility issue they're investigating.

Paolo Rizzo
•How would I know if there's an adjudication issue? My account doesn't show anything pending.

QuantumQuest
•Not all adjudication issues show up clearly in the online portal. Sometimes you only find out when they make a determination and it affects your benefits.

This happened to my sister and it turned out she accidentally answered 'no' to being able to work when she meant to answer 'yes'. One wrong click and boom - ineligible week. The questions are confusing and easy to mess up.

Paolo Rizzo
•That's possible! Those questions are worded so strangely. Was she able to get it fixed?

Isabella Silva
•Yeah but she had to call multiple times before getting someone who could help. Took like a week to resolve.

I'm dealing with the same issue right now. Got an ineligible week out of nowhere and can't figure out why. The online system gives zero helpful information about what went wrong.

•It's crazy how many people are having this problem! You'd think they'd at least tell us what we did wrong.

•The system is designed to deny first and make you prove eligibility later. It's backwards but that's how they operate.

Don't panic yet - sometimes ineligible weeks get automatically corrected once the system processes everything properly. But definitely try to reach someone to get clarification so you know what to avoid in future weeks.

Paolo Rizzo
•I hope you're right about it getting corrected automatically. I really can't afford to lose any benefits right now.

•I wouldn't count on it fixing itself. Better to be proactive and get answers from ESD directly.

Had this exact same thing happen and used Claimyr to finally get through to ESD. The agent was able to see exactly why my week was marked ineligible (turned out to be a system error) and fixed it while I was on the phone. Definitely recommend trying their service if you can't get through the regular way.

•How long did it take to get connected through Claimyr?
0 coins
Omar Farouk
•Much faster than calling on my own. Instead of hours of busy signals and disconnects, I was talking to an agent within like 30 minutes.

make sure you didnt report any holiday pay or vacation time. even if you worked it before getting laid off they count it as earnings for the week they pay it out

Paolo Rizzo
•No holiday or vacation pay - I haven't received any money from my former employer since I was laid off.

This is exactly why I hate the unemployment system. They make it so complicated and then don't even tell you what you did wrong when they deny benefits. It's like they want people to give up and stop claiming.

•The system is definitely frustrating but complaining won't help OP figure out their specific issue.

Chloe Harris
•True, but it helps to know other people understand how messed up this process is.

OP, here's what I'd recommend: 1) Review your weekly claim answers carefully to see if anything looks wrong, 2) Check if you have any unread messages in your online account, 3) Try calling first thing Monday morning when call volume is usually lower, and 4) If you can't get through, consider using a service like Claimyr to help connect you with an agent who can explain exactly what happened.

Paolo Rizzo
•This is really helpful, thank you! I'll try calling early Monday and if that doesn't work I'll look into Claimyr.

•Good advice. Early morning calls are definitely your best bet for getting through to ESD.

I work at a workforce center and see this issue come up regularly. Most of the time it's either job search requirement problems or accidentally answering eligibility questions incorrectly. The key is getting someone on the phone who can look at your specific claim details.
0 coins
Paolo Rizzo
•Do workforce centers have any special line to ESD or is it the same number everyone else calls?
0 coins
Sean Flanagan
•We use the same number but we have some internal contacts for complex cases. For most issues though, claimants need to call directly.

Whatever you do, don't stop filing your weekly claims while you're trying to resolve this. Even if weeks show as ineligible, you need to keep filing to maintain your claim. Missing weeks can cause bigger problems.
0 coins
Paolo Rizzo
•Good point, I'll make sure to keep filing even if I'm not sure about the answers.

QuantumQuest
•Exactly right. You can always appeal ineligible determinations but you can't go back and file missed weeks.

just wanted to say thanks for posting this - I was about to ask the same question! got an ineligible week yesterday and had no clue what it meant. sounds like we're all in the same boat trying to figure out this confusing system

I had three ineligible weeks in a row last year and it turned out my former employer had contested my claim and ESD was investigating. They never told me about the investigation until I finally got through to someone on the phone. Definitely try to speak with an agent ASAP.

Paolo Rizzo
•That's scary - how did that investigation turn out? Were you able to get the benefits restored?
0 coins
Luca Ferrari
•Yeah, took about two months but I eventually got all the back pay. The employer's contest was bogus but I had to prove it with documentation.

Amina Sy
•Two months?! That's way too long to go without benefits while they investigate.

Update: I ended up using Claimyr after seeing it mentioned here and finally got through to ESD. Turns out my ineligible week was because I reported job search activities that weren't specific enough. The agent helped me understand exactly what they need and fixed the week. Definitely worth it if you're stuck trying to reach them the regular way.

•That's so helpful to know! I bet my issue is something simple like that too. Thanks for the update.

•What kind of details do they want for job search activities? I might be making the same mistake.

Natasha Petrova
•They want company names, specific job titles, dates, and method of contact. Generic entries like 'applied online' aren't enough anymore.
