What does WW served mean for unemployment NYS Department of Labor claim status?
I just checked my claim status online and it shows 'WW served' next to one of my weekly claims. I have no idea what this means and I'm getting worried because my payment is delayed. I've been filing my weekly claims on time and reporting my job search activities. Has anyone seen this status before? Should I be concerned about my benefits being stopped?

WW served means 'Waiting Week Served' - it's actually a good thing! In NY, you have to serve one unpaid waiting week before you can start receiving benefits. This status shows that you've completed your waiting week requirement. Your payments should start processing after this.

•Oh thank goodness! I was panicking thinking I did something wrong. So this means I'll get paid for the weeks after the waiting week?

yeah i had that too when i first filed. basically you dont get paid for your first week but every week after that you should get your benefits as long as you keep filing weekly claims and doing your job search stuff

The waiting week is required for all new unemployment claims in New York. You'll see 'WW served' for that first week, then your subsequent weekly claims should show as payable once they're processed. Make sure you're still filing every week even though that first one won't be paid.

•Wait, I'm confused - do I still need to do job search activities during the waiting week? I thought since I wasn't getting paid I didn't have to look for work that week.

•Yes, you still need to do your job search activities during the waiting week. The waiting week is still a week you're claiming benefits, you're just not getting paid for it. You need to maintain all the requirements.

I had so much trouble getting through to someone at NYS Department of Labor to ask about this same thing. If anyone else is having issues reaching them, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Way easier than sitting on hold for hours.

This whole waiting week thing is ridiculous if you ask me. People file for unemployment because they NEED money immediately, not because they want to wait around for a week without pay. Just another way the system makes things harder for people who are already struggling.

I totally understand the frustration with the waiting week - it does seem counterintuitive when you're already in a tough financial situation. From what I've learned, the waiting week is supposed to help manage the state's unemployment fund and ensure people are genuinely unemployed rather than just taking a brief break from work. It's been a requirement in NY for years, though I know some other states have eliminated theirs. The good news is that once you get through it, the benefits should flow more smoothly. Hang in there!
