What does WW served mean for Washington ESD unemployment claim?

I'm looking at my Washington ESD claim status online and it shows 'WW served' next to one of my weekly claims. I have no idea what this means and can't find any explanation anywhere. My claim was approved last month and I've been filing weekly claims normally. This is the first time I've seen this code. Does anyone know what WW served means? Should I be worried about my benefits?

WW stands for 'Waiting Week' - it means you've served your waiting week requirement. In Washington, you have to serve one unpaid waiting week before you can start receiving benefits. The 'served' part means you've completed that requirement.

Oh that makes sense! So I won't get paid for that week but it's normal?

0 coins

Exactly. Everyone has to do one waiting week when they first file. It's unpaid but counts toward your benefit year.

yeah the waiting week thing is confusing at first. i thought there was something wrong with my claim too when i saw that

Did you eventually start getting paid after that week showed as served?

yep, next week was normal and i got my payment

I had a similar confusion when I first saw this. If you're having trouble getting clear answers from Washington ESD directly, I found Claimyr really helpful. They can actually get you through to an ESD agent who can explain your specific claim status. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

How much does that service cost? I'm already barely making it on unemployment.

It's worth it when you need real answers. Way better than spending hours trying to call ESD directly.

I might check that out if I run into more issues. Thanks for the suggestion!

The waiting week is such a stupid policy. Like we're not already struggling enough when we lose our job, now they make us wait an extra week for benefits we already paid into through taxes.

I totally agree. It's like they're trying to discourage people from filing.

I get the frustration but it's been the law for decades. At least it's only one week per benefit year.

Wait, does everyone have to do a waiting week? I thought that was only for certain types of claims.

0 coins

Nope, everyone who files for regular unemployment in Washington has to serve one waiting week. It's different from standby claims though.

Good to know. I'm planning to file soon so this is helpful info.

Another question - will that waiting week ever get paid out? Like at the end of my claim or something?

0 coins

No, the waiting week is never paid. It's just a requirement you have to meet to establish your claim.

0 coins

Okay, that's what I figured but wanted to make sure. Thanks everyone!

This is helpful. I was wondering about the same thing but was too embarrassed to ask. The ESD website doesn't explain these codes very well.

Don't be embarrassed! The unemployment system is confusing and they don't make it easy to understand.

That's exactly why services like Claimyr exist. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person who can explain what's happening with your specific claim.

Pro tip: keep track of all your claim statuses and payment dates. I use a simple spreadsheet to track everything including when I filed, what the status shows, and when payments hit my account.

That's a great idea. I should start doing that too.

Same here. Helps a lot when you need to reference something later or if there are issues.

I've been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years and still get confused by all the different status codes. WW served, adjudication pending, ID required - it's like they speak a different language.

ID required is the worst one. That usually means they want additional documentation.

0 coins

Yeah, I had to deal with that last time. Took forever to get resolved.

For anyone else who might be confused about claim status codes, the waiting week thing is pretty standard across most states. It's not just a Washington thing.

Good point. My sister in Oregon had to do the same thing when she filed there.

0 coins

Interesting. I didn't realize it was so common.

Just want to add that if you see WW served and then your next weekly claim shows as paid, you're good to go. That means you've met the waiting week requirement and should get regular payments going forward.

0 coins

Perfect, that's exactly what happened. My next claim shows as paid so I think I'm all set.

0 coins

Congrats! The hardest part is usually getting through that initial approval and waiting week.

This thread is really helpful. I wish there was better documentation about all these status codes somewhere official.

Agreed. The ESD website could definitely be more user-friendly.

That's another reason why I like using Claimyr when I have questions. The agents they connect you with can actually explain what everything means in plain English.

Quick question - does the waiting week count toward your total benefit weeks? Like if you're eligible for 26 weeks, do you still get 26 paid weeks or is it 25 paid weeks plus the waiting week?

0 coins

You still get your full 26 weeks of paid benefits. The waiting week doesn't count against your total benefit entitlement.

Thanks for clarifying that! That's a relief.

Man, unemployment is so stressful even when everything is going right. Every little status change makes you worry something's wrong.

I totally feel this. I screenshot everything just in case.

Same! I was panicking over nothing apparently.

Thanks for asking this question OP. I learned something new today and I've been dealing with unemployment claims for years.

Happy to help! This community is great for figuring out confusing ESD stuff.

Absolutely. And when you can't find answers here, Claimyr is a good backup option for getting through to ESD directly.
