How to fill out Washington ESD unemployment application - need help with the forms
I'm completely lost trying to fill out my Washington ESD unemployment application online. I got laid off last week and everyone keeps telling me to file right away but the questions on the website are confusing. Some sections ask about my work history going back 18 months, others want weekly earnings, and I'm not sure what counts as 'separation reason.' I worked at three different jobs in the past year and one was part-time. Do I need to list all of them? Also what's the difference between the initial claim and weekly claims? I don't want to mess this up and delay getting benefits.

The Washington ESD application can definitely be overwhelming at first! For your work history, yes you need to list ALL employers from the past 18 months, including part-time jobs. The system uses this to calculate your benefit amount. For separation reason, just be honest - if you were laid off, select 'lack of work' or 'layoff.' The initial claim establishes your benefit year, then you file weekly claims every week to actually get paid.

•Thank you! So I list all three jobs even though one was only 10 hours a week? And do I need pay stubs for all of them?

GalacticGladiator
•Yes list everything! You don't need to upload pay stubs during the initial application, but keep them handy in case Washington ESD requests them later during adjudication.

I just went through this process last month. The trick is to have all your employment info ready before you start - dates of employment, gross wages, reason you left each job. Take your time filling it out because you can't easily change answers once submitted.

•How long did it take you to complete the whole application?

Omar Zaki
•About 45 minutes because I had to dig up old W-2s and remember exact dates. Don't rush it.

Pro tip - if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone to ask questions while filling out your application, I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to live agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true that they can actually get you through to Washington ESD.

•I was skeptical too but it actually worked. They handle the calling and wait times, then connect you when an agent picks up. Saved me literally hours of frustration.

•I might need this if I mess up my application! Thanks for sharing.

Make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if your initial claim is still being processed! I made the mistake of waiting and lost out on benefits for those weeks. You can't go back and claim them later.

•Wait, so I file weekly claims before my initial claim is approved? That seems backwards.

Anastasia Ivanova
•Exactly! The weekly claims are what triggers payment once your initial claim gets approved. If you don't file them, those weeks are just gone forever.

•This is absolutely correct. File your weekly claims every Sunday starting the week after you submit your initial application.

•Oh no, did you lose all your progress? I'm worried about that happening to me.

•yeah it doesn't save anything. now i copy my answers into a word doc as i go just in case

For the earnings section, make sure you report gross wages (before taxes) not net wages. Common mistake that can mess up your benefit calculation. Also if you had any vacation payout or severance, that goes in a separate section.

•I did get two weeks severance pay. Does that delay when I can start collecting unemployment?
0 coins
StarStrider
•It depends on Washington state rules but typically severance creates a waiting period. You still file your initial claim right away though, just report the severance honestly.

Whatever you do, don't lie on the application. Washington ESD will find out eventually and you'll have to pay back benefits plus penalties. Not worth it!

•I wasn't planning to lie but some of the questions are confusing. Like what if I can't remember exact dates from 15 months ago?

•Do your best to be accurate but don't stress about being off by a few days. They mainly care that you're being honest, not that you remember every detail perfectly.

One more important thing - after you submit your initial claim, you'll get a monetary determination letter showing your weekly benefit amount. Review it carefully and appeal within 30 days if anything looks wrong. It's much harder to fix errors later.

Freya Larsen
•How long does it usually take to get that letter?
0 coins
GalacticGladiator
•Usually 7-10 business days if there are no issues with your claim. If it goes to adjudication, could be weeks longer.

I worked for a temp agency last year and that was confusing to report. Turns out you list the temp agency as the employer, not the companies where you actually worked. Might save someone else the headache.

Freya Larsen
•Good to know! I didn't have temp work but that would definitely be confusing.

The job search requirements section confused me too. You don't have to start job searching immediately but you do need to register with WorkSource within a certain timeframe. The application should tell you the deadline.

Freya Larsen
•What's WorkSource? Is that different from Washington ESD?
0 coins
Nia Davis
•WorkSource is the job search system. You'll need to create an account there and log your job search activities once you start claiming benefits.

If you worked in another state recently, that makes the application more complicated. You might need to file an interstate claim. The Washington ESD website has info about that but honestly it's confusing enough that I'd call them.

•All my work was in Washington so hopefully I'm good there.

•If you do need to call Washington ESD, definitely check out that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Calling the regular way is brutal.

Just a heads up that if you were fired (not laid off), you'll probably have to go through adjudication where they investigate whether you qualify for benefits. Be prepared for that to take several weeks.

Freya Larsen
•I was definitely laid off due to company downsizing, so hopefully no issues there.

The hardest part for me was calculating my hours worked at each job. Some places I was salary, others hourly. For salary jobs I just divided my weekly salary by minimum wage to estimate hours, seemed to work fine.
0 coins
Freya Larsen
•That's a smart approach. Two of my jobs were salary so I'll try that method.

Make sure you answer the availability questions correctly. If you say you're not available for full-time work or can't work certain days, it might affect your benefits.

Freya Larsen
•I'm available for any work schedule so that should be straightforward.

Does anyone know if you can save a partially completed application and come back to it later? I started mine but realized I need to gather more documents.
0 coins
Sean Murphy
•nope, you have to complete it in one session or start over. learned that the hard way

Ethan Brown
•Ugh, that's so frustrating. Thanks for the warning.

For anyone still struggling with the application or having questions they can't find answers to online, seriously consider using Claimyr to talk to an actual Washington ESD person. Sometimes you just need to talk through your specific situation with someone who knows the system.

Yuki Yamamoto
•How much does something like that cost though?

Chloe Taylor
•Way less than the stress and potential lost benefits from filing incorrectly. Plus they show you exactly how it works before you commit to anything.

The application asks about union membership too. If you were in a union, make sure to report that accurately as it might affect your benefit calculation.

Freya Larsen
•I wasn't in a union but good to know for others.

Remember that Washington ESD can take up to 6 weeks to process your claim if there are any complications. File as soon as possible after becoming unemployed, don't wait!

Freya Larsen
•That's exactly why I'm trying to get this done this week. I can't afford to wait longer than necessary.

The biggest thing is just being thorough and honest. I know it's tempting to rush through it but taking your time on the initial application can save you weeks of headaches later.

•Thanks everyone for all the advice! I feel much more confident about filling this out now.

Good luck with your application! Remember to file your weekly claims every Sunday once you submit it, and don't hesitate to reach out if you run into issues during the process.
