How to do weekly unemployment claims on Washington ESD - step by step help needed
I'm totally lost on filing my weekly claim with Washington ESD. Got approved for unemployment last week but now I'm staring at this weekly claim form and have no idea what I'm doing. The website keeps asking about job search activities and work hours but I'm not sure how to fill it out correctly. Do I need to report every single job I applied to? What if I worked a few hours at my part-time gig - how do I report that without messing up my benefits? Really don't want to screw this up and lose my claim. Anyone have a simple walkthrough?

The weekly claim process is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. Log into your Washington ESD account and look for the 'File Weekly Claim' option. You'll need to answer questions about any work you did that week and report gross earnings (before taxes). For job search, you need at least 3 job search activities per week - applications, interviews, networking events all count.

•Thanks! So if I worked 8 hours at $15/hour, I report $120 gross earnings right? And do online applications count as job search activities?

•Exactly right on the earnings. Yes, online applications definitely count as job search activities. Just keep records of where you applied and when.

Make sure you file your weekly claim every Sunday for the previous week. I almost missed my first one because I thought it was due on Monday. The system locks you out if you're late and then you have to call Washington ESD to reopen it.

•Good to know! What time on Sunday does it become available?

•Usually available Sunday morning around 6am. I just make it part of my Sunday routine now.

I've been filing weekly claims for months now and honestly the hardest part is getting through to Washington ESD when you have questions. Their phone lines are absolutely swamped. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually gets you connected to an agent - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•How does that work exactly? Do they just call for you or something?

•They handle the calling process and get you connected to an actual Washington ESD representative. Super helpful when you need to resolve claim issues that can't be fixed online.

•That sounds useful. I'm worried I'll mess something up and need to talk to someone.

Pro tip: Screenshot or print your confirmation page after filing each weekly claim. Washington ESD's system sometimes glitches and you'll want proof you filed on time. I learned this the hard way when my claim got held up for 'failure to file' even though I definitely submitted it.

•This happened to me too! They said I didn't file but I had the confirmation number. Took weeks to sort out.

•Exactly why I always take screenshots now. The confirmation number isn't always enough - they want to see the actual page sometimes.

Don't stress too much about perfect job search documentation at first. As long as you're making genuine efforts to find work and can show 3 activities per week, you'll be fine. I keep a simple spreadsheet with company name, position, date applied, and method (online, in person, etc).

•That spreadsheet idea is smart. Do they actually check your job search log regularly?

•They can audit randomly but in my experience it's not super common. Just be honest and keep good records in case they ask.

•I got audited after 3 months and had to submit my job search log. Glad I kept track!

One thing that confused me at first - if you work part-time while collecting, you still might get some unemployment benefits. Washington ESD has a formula where they reduce your weekly benefit but don't eliminate it entirely unless you earn too much. Worth reporting the work honestly rather than trying to hide it.

•How much can you earn before they cut off benefits completely?
0 coins
Natalie Khan
•It depends on your weekly benefit amount. Generally if you earn more than 1.5 times your weekly benefit, you won't get any unemployment that week.

The Washington ESD website can be really slow on Sundays since everyone files their weekly claims then. If it's timing out or running slow, try filing later in the evening or early Monday morning. You have until the following Saturday to file without penalty.

•I always file Monday morning for this reason. Much faster and less stressful.

•Good tip! I was planning to do it right at midnight Sunday but maybe I'll wait.

Make sure you understand the difference between being 'able and available' for work versus actively searching. You need to answer yes to able and available every week (unless you're sick or have other qualifying reasons), but the job search requirement is separate. Don't confuse the two questions on the weekly claim form.

•What counts as not being available for work? Like if I have a doctor's appointment?

Kirsuktow DarkBlade
•A single doctor's appointment wouldn't make you unavailable for the whole week. It's more about being ready to accept work if offered and not having major barriers.

Anyone else having trouble with the mobile version of the Washington ESD site? I tried filing my weekly claim on my phone and it kept erroring out. Ended up having to use a computer.

•Yeah the mobile site is terrible. I always use my laptop now.

•Glad it's not just me. You'd think they'd have a better mobile experience by now.

If you run into any issues with your weekly claims or need clarification on something specific, seriously consider using Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD. I was stuck for weeks trying to resolve a discrepancy in my earnings report and couldn't get anyone on the phone. Claimyr got me connected same day and the agent cleared everything up in 10 minutes.

•Is there a cost for using Claimyr?

Daryl Bright
•There is a fee but honestly it was worth it to get my issue resolved quickly instead of calling for weeks with no luck.

Pro tip from someone who's been doing this for 6 months: set up a calendar reminder for every Sunday to file your weekly claim. I use my phone's weekly recurring reminder and it's been a lifesaver. Easy to forget when you're dealing with job search stress.

Quick question - if I start a new job mid-week, do I still file a weekly claim for that week? I'm starting Wednesday and not sure how to handle the partial week.
0 coins
Rudy Cenizo
•Yes, file the claim and report your earnings for the days you worked. Washington ESD will calculate the partial benefit based on what you earned that week.

•Thanks! I was worried about accidentally claiming benefits I wasn't entitled to.

Does anyone know if volunteer work counts toward the job search requirement? I've been doing some volunteer work in my field hoping it leads to connections.
0 coins
Ahooker-Equator
•Volunteer work itself doesn't count as job search, but networking events or job fairs through the volunteer organization would count.

Jamal Brown
•That makes sense. I'll focus on the networking aspects when I report my activities.

Been filing weekly claims for 4 months now and the routine becomes automatic. Just remember to be honest about everything - work hours, earnings, job search efforts. Washington ESD does audit claims and it's not worth the risk of benefit fraud charges to try to game the system.

•What happens if you make an honest mistake on a weekly claim?

•Usually they'll just adjust the payment and might ask for clarification. Honest mistakes are different from intentional fraud.

The Washington ESD system automatically deposits benefits if you have direct deposit set up, usually by Wednesday after filing your Sunday claim. If you're getting a debit card, it takes a bit longer.
0 coins
Harmony Love
•How do you set up direct deposit? I'm still waiting for my debit card to arrive.
0 coins
Lena Kowalski
•You can add banking info in your Washington ESD account under payment methods. Much faster than waiting for the card.

Just want to echo what others said about keeping records. I keep a simple notebook with my weekly filing dates, earnings reported, and job search activities. Old school but it works and I never worry about losing digital files.

•That's smart. I lost my spreadsheet when my computer crashed and had to recreate everything from memory.

For anyone struggling with the Washington ESD phone system like I was, I ended up using Claimyr after reading about it here. Game changer for getting actual help when you need it. The video demo they have really shows how much easier it makes the whole process.

One last tip - if you're having trouble with your weekly claim or it gets stuck processing, don't wait weeks hoping it resolves itself. Contact Washington ESD as soon as possible because delayed payments can create a backlog that takes forever to clear up.
