How to file for unemployment in Washington - confused about the process
I just moved to Washington from out of state and lost my job last week. I'm completely lost on how to file for unemployment here. I've heard about Washington ESD but I don't know where to start or what documents I need. The website seems overwhelming and I'm worried I'll mess something up. Can someone walk me through the basic steps? I worked in retail for the past 2 years if that matters.

You'll need to file your initial claim online at esd.wa.gov. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked. Make sure you have your last employer's information handy too.

•Do I need pay stubs or just the basic info?

Nia Williams
•Just the basic employment info for the initial filing. They might ask for pay stubs later if there are any issues with your claim.

The Washington ESD online system can be tricky at first. You'll create an account through SecureAccess Washington (SAW) first, then access the unemployment services. Take your time filling everything out - accuracy is more important than speed.

•How long does it usually take to get approved?

Luca Ricci
•If everything goes smoothly, about 2-3 weeks. But if your claim goes into adjudication for any reason, it can take much longer.

I spent HOURS trying to get through to Washington ESD when I had questions about my claim. The phone lines are always busy and you get disconnected constantly. Super frustrating when you just need basic help.

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but honestly anything that helps with the phone situation sounds good to me.

make sure u file within the first week after losing ur job or u might lose benefits

Nia Williams
•That's not exactly right. You should file as soon as possible but you won't lose all benefits if you're a few days late. There might be a waiting period though.

•oh ok my bad, thought i heard that somewhere

Washington ESD is the WORST. Their system crashes constantly, the phone lines don't work, and don't even get me started on how long adjudication takes. I've been waiting 6 weeks just to get someone to look at my claim!

Luca Ricci
•Six weeks in adjudication is really long. Have you tried calling to check on the status?

Carmen Sanchez
•TRIED calling? I've called hundreds of times and never gotten through to a human.

•This is exactly why I started using Claimyr. They handle the calling process for you so you don't have to deal with busy signals and getting hung up on.

What happens after I file the initial claim? Do I just wait?

Nia Williams
•No, you need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. You'll also need to do job search activities and report them.

Mateo Gonzalez
•How many job searches do I need to do per week?
0 coins
Nia Williams
•Currently it's 3 job search activities per week. You can do this through WorkSourceWA or on your own, but you need to keep records.

I filed 3 months ago and still haven't seen a penny. Every time I try to call Washington ESD I get the runaround. This system is broken.

Luca Ricci
•Three months with no payment usually means there's an issue that needs to be resolved. What does your account show when you log in?
0 coins
Andre Dupont
•It just says 'adjudication in progress' but no details about what the issue is.

Does anyone know if you can file if you were self-employed? I had a small business that failed.

Luca Ricci
•Self-employed people usually don't qualify for regular UI unless they paid into the system. You might want to check if you're eligible for any other programs.

•Darn, that's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the info.

Thanks everyone for all the help! I'm going to start the application process today. Wish me luck with the Washington ESD website.

•Good luck! Take screenshots of everything as you go through the process in case you need them later.

•And remember, if you run into issues reaching ESD by phone, Claimyr can help. Much less stressful than trying to call on your own.

I got my first payment this week after filing 4 weeks ago. The process worked fine for me, no issues with adjudication or anything.

Mateo Gonzalez
•That's encouraging! How much were you able to get per week if you don't mind me asking?

•I'd rather not share exact numbers but it was based on my previous wages. You can use the benefit calculator on the ESD website to get an estimate.

make sure you report any part time work or they'll say you committed fraud

Nia Williams
•Absolutely correct. Any income needs to be reported on your weekly claims, even if it's just a few hours of work.

•yeah learned that the hard way, got an overpayment notice

The job search requirement is such a joke. Like we're not already looking for work? Now I have to prove it to Washington ESD every week.

Luca Ricci
•I understand the frustration but the requirement helps ensure people are actively seeking employment. Just keep good records of your activities.

•I guess, just feels like busy work when you're already stressed about being unemployed.

Update: I got through the initial application! It took about 45 minutes but wasn't as bad as I expected. Now I just wait to hear back from Washington ESD.

Wait you moved from out of state? Make sure Washington ESD has the right base period for calculating your benefits.
0 coins
Mateo Gonzalez
•What do you mean by base period?
0 coins
Liam O'Sullivan
•It's the time period they use to calculate your benefit amount, usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters. Since you worked out of state, they might need wage records from your previous state.

I'm dealing with an identity verification issue that's been holding up my claim for weeks. Anyone else had this problem?
0 coins
Luca Ricci
•ID verification issues are common. You'll need to provide additional documentation through your ESD account or by mail.

•I uploaded everything they asked for but it's still pending. So frustrating.

Mateo Gonzalez
•Good to know! When are weekly claims due each week?

Does Washington ESD offer any job training programs while you're collecting unemployment?
0 coins
Luca Ricci
•Yes, there are training programs available through WorkSource. Some allow you to continue receiving UI benefits while in training.

•That sounds perfect, I'll look into that. Thanks!

Been trying to reach Washington ESD for 2 weeks about my claim status. This phone system is impossible.

•I totally get the frustration. That's actually how I discovered Claimyr - I was spending hours trying to get through. Now I just use their service when I need to talk to someone at ESD.
0 coins
Dylan Hughes
•How does that work exactly? Do they actually get you connected to a real person?
0 coins
Ethan Campbell
•Yeah, they handle all the calling and waiting, then connect you when they get an agent on the line. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.
