How to file claim for unemployment with Washington ESD - complete beginner needs help
I just got laid off yesterday and have never filed for unemployment before. I'm totally overwhelmed looking at the Washington ESD website and don't even know where to start. Do I need to file immediately or can I wait a few days? What documents do I need to have ready? I've heard there's something called a weekly claim too but I'm not sure what that means. Any guidance would be really appreciated because I'm starting to panic about how I'm going to pay my bills.

First, take a deep breath - you can absolutely get through this! You should file your initial claim as soon as possible since there's usually a one-week waiting period before benefits start. Go to secure.esd.wa.gov and create an account if you don't have one. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment information from the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation.

•Thank you so much! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic employment info?

Ravi Choudhury
•Basic employment info is usually enough for the initial filing, but keep your pay stubs handy in case Washington ESD needs them later for verification.

the waiting week thing is confusing but basically you file your claim then wait one week before you can start filing weekly claims for actual payments. make sure you file every week even during that waiting period or you'll mess up your claim

•Wait so I file the initial claim then immediately start filing weekly claims? Or do I wait?

•You can start filing weekly claims right away, but the first week is unpaid. It's called the waiting week. Just keep filing every week consistently - that's the most important thing.

I know this is stressful, but honestly the hardest part is just getting started. Once you file that initial claim, Washington ESD will send you information about what to do next. The weekly claims become routine after the first couple times. Just make sure you're available for work and actively looking for jobs because they do check on that.

•What if you can't get through on the phone to Washington ESD when you have questions? I've been trying to call for days about my claim status.

•Yeah the phone lines are brutal. I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

OMG I remember being in your exact situation last year! I was so overwhelmed I put off filing for like 3 days which was stupid because you can't get benefits for those days you delay. The Washington ESD website is actually pretty straightforward once you start clicking through it. Just have all your employment info ready and set aside like 30-45 minutes to complete it.

•That's reassuring to hear! Did you run into any problems during the application process?

•Not really, just make sure your employer information is accurate. I had to go back and fix my previous employer's address which delayed my claim a bit.

•Same thing happened to me! Double check all the employer details before submitting.

THE WASHINGTON ESD SYSTEM IS SO CONFUSING FOR NO REASON. Why can't they just make it simple instead of having all these different steps and requirements? I spent 2 hours trying to figure out what a "weekly claim" even was.

•I understand the frustration, but weekly claims are just your way of certifying each week that you're still unemployed and looking for work. It's how they know to send you your benefit payment.

•I GET THAT NOW but they could explain it better on their website instead of using all this bureaucratic language

•honestly yeah the website could be way clearer about what everything means

One thing that catches a lot of people off guard is the job search requirement. In Washington, you need to make at least 3 job contacts per week and keep a detailed log. You can do this through WorkSourceWA or maintain your own records, but Washington ESD can audit your job search activities at any time.

Isabella Silva
•Wait, I have to prove I'm looking for jobs? How do they check that?
0 coins
Ravi Choudhury
•Yes, it's a federal requirement. They typically don't check unless there's a reason to, but you need to keep records of where you applied, what positions, dates, and contact information. WorkSourceWA.gov is the official site they recommend for tracking.

•I've been on unemployment for 8 months and they've never asked to see my job search log, but I keep detailed records just in case.

Just to add to what others have said - make sure you file your weekly claim every week by the deadline (usually Sunday night). If you miss a week, you can't go back and file it later. This trips up a lot of people who think they can catch up later.

•What happens if I accidentally miss filing a weekly claim?

•You lose that week's benefits completely. Washington ESD doesn't allow backdating of weekly claims except in very rare circumstances with documented good cause.

Has anyone had their claim go into adjudication? Mine has been stuck for 2 weeks and I can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to find out what's going on.

Ravi Choudhury
•Adjudication happens when there's a question about your eligibility, usually related to why you left your job or if there are conflicting reports. It can take several weeks unfortunately.

•I used Claimyr when I was stuck in adjudication hell. They got me through to someone who explained the issue and what documentation I needed to provide. Worth checking out their website.

pro tip: file your initial claim early in the week if possible. i filed mine on a friday and had to wait through the weekend to start getting responses and it felt like forever when you're stressed about money

•Good point! I'll file mine tomorrow morning then.

Make sure you understand the difference between being "able and available" for work versus being on standby. If you're expecting to be called back to your job, you might qualify for standby which has different requirements than regular unemployment.

Isabella Silva
•My employer said they might call me back in a few weeks. Does that mean I should apply for standby instead?
0 coins
Diego Mendoza
•If your employer gave you a specific recall date within 4 weeks, you can apply for standby. Otherwise, file regular unemployment and you can always switch if you get recalled.

•I was on standby for 6 weeks before my employer finally admitted they weren't bringing people back. Had to switch to regular UI and restart my job search requirements.

The whole process is intimidating at first but it gets easier. I've been filing weekly claims for 3 months now and it takes me maybe 5 minutes each week. The initial claim is definitely the hardest part.

Isabella Silva
•That's encouraging to hear! How long did it take for your first payment to come through?
0 coins
Luca Ferrari
•About 2 weeks after filing, which included the waiting week. Some people get approved faster if their claim is straightforward.

ANOTHER THING - they don't tell you this clearly but if you work ANY hours during a week you need to report it on your weekly claim even if it's just a few hours. I almost got in trouble for not reporting a day of temp work.
0 coins
Ravi Choudhury
•Yes, this is crucial! Any work, even a few hours, must be reported. Washington ESD can reduce your benefits for that week based on earnings, but not reporting it can be considered fraud.

•What if you volunteer somewhere? Do you have to report volunteer hours?
0 coins
Ravi Choudhury
•No, volunteer work doesn't need to be reported as long as you're not receiving any compensation or benefits.

I'm dealing with a similar situation but my employer is fighting my claim saying I quit when I was actually laid off. Has anyone dealt with this before?
0 coins
Ravi Choudhury
•This will likely trigger an adjudication process where Washington ESD investigates the circumstances of your separation. Make sure you have any documentation showing you were laid off, not that you quit voluntarily.

Mateo Martinez
•I have the layoff notice email but it's been 3 weeks and still no decision. This is really stressful.

•Employer disputes can take forever to resolve. I had to wait 6 weeks for mine. If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about the status, I'd recommend trying Claimyr - they specialize in getting through to the right department.

Quick question - do I need to file in the state where I worked or where I live? I live in Washington but my last job was remote for a company in another state.
0 coins
Ravi Choudhury
•Generally you file in the state where you worked, but remote work situations can be tricky. If you physically worked from Washington, you'd likely file here. If you're unsure, Washington ESD can help determine which state has jurisdiction.

•Thanks, I'll call them to clarify since it's a bit complicated.

Does anyone know if Washington ESD benefits are taxable? Should I be setting aside money for taxes?
0 coins
Ravi Choudhury
•Yes, unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your benefits (10% federal) or pay them when you file your tax return. Most people opt for withholding to avoid a big tax bill later.
0 coins
StarStrider
•Good to know! I'll set up the tax withholding when I file my claim.

One last tip - save confirmation numbers for everything you submit to Washington ESD. I had to reference my initial claim confirmation number when I called about an issue weeks later.

•Great advice! I'll definitely keep track of all my confirmation numbers.

•Yeah, screenshot everything. The Washington ESD system can be glitchy and having proof of what you submitted is important.

Just wanted to add - if you do run into issues reaching Washington ESD by phone, which happens a lot, there are services that can help. I personally used Claimyr and it was a game changer for getting actual answers instead of sitting on hold forever.
