How to apply for partial unemployment Washington ESD - reduced work hours
My employer cut my hours from 40 to 20 per week and I'm struggling to make ends meet. I heard you can get partial unemployment benefits in Washington but I have no idea how to apply for partial unemployment through Washington ESD. Do I use the same application as regular unemployment? Will they reduce my benefits because I'm still working part-time? I'm worried about messing something up and losing what little income I have left.

Yes you can definitely apply for partial unemployment benefits in Washington! You use the same initial application process on the Washington ESD website. When you file your weekly claims, you'll report your reduced earnings and they'll calculate a partial benefit amount. Just make sure you're available for additional work.

•Thank you! Do I need to do anything special when filling out the application to indicate it's for partial unemployment?

•No, the application is the same. The partial aspect gets handled when you file your weekly claims and report your earnings.

I tried this last year and it was a nightmare. Washington ESD kept putting my claim in adjudication because they couldn't figure out if I was truly available for work while still employed. Took weeks to get anyone on the phone to explain the situation.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about! How did you finally get it resolved?

•Honestly I used a service called Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD agents. Found it at claimyr.com and they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ. Made all the difference in getting my partial claim sorted out.

•I'll check that out if I run into problems. Hopefully it goes smoother for me.

Important things to know about partial unemployment in Washington: You can earn up to your weekly benefit amount plus $5 before they start reducing your benefits. So if your weekly benefit would be $400, you can earn up to $405 and still get some partial payment. Report ALL earnings honestly on your weekly claims.

•That's really helpful! So if I'm earning $300 a week now, I could potentially get some benefits on top of that?

Noland Curtis
•Exactly, depending on what your calculated weekly benefit amount is. The Washington ESD system will do the math for you each week.

•It's totally legal! Partial unemployment exists specifically for people whose hours got reduced. As long as you report your earnings accurately, you're fine.

Make sure you understand the work search requirements for partial claims. You still need to be actively looking for additional work, not just content with your reduced hours. Keep a log of your job search activities because Washington ESD may audit this.

•Do I need to search for full-time work or can I look for additional part-time hours to supplement?

•Both count as valid work search activities. The key is showing you're trying to increase your total work hours and income.

•I didn't know this and got a letter asking for my job search records. Luckily I had been keeping track but it was stressful.

Been on partial unemployment for 6 months now due to reduced restaurant hours. The weekly reporting gets routine after a while. Just be super careful about reporting your gross earnings, not net. I made that mistake early on and had to correct it.

•Good point about gross vs net earnings. Did Washington ESD catch your mistake or did you realize it yourself?

•I caught it when reviewing my claim history online. Better to fix these things early before they become overpayment issues.

The Washington ESD website has a partial unemployment calculator somewhere that lets you estimate what you might receive. It's pretty accurate for getting a ballpark figure before you apply.

•I'll look for that calculator, thanks! It would be nice to know what to expect.

•Found it helpful too when my hours got cut. Gave me realistic expectations about the benefit amount.

One thing to watch out for - if your employer starts giving you more hours again, you need to report that immediately. Don't wait until your next weekly claim. Washington ESD wants real-time updates on income changes.

•How do I report changes between weekly claims? Is there a way to update them mid-week?

Isabel Vega
•You can call Washington ESD or use their online messaging system. Don't just wait and report it on the next weekly claim.

i've been getting partial for months and its been fine. just file the weekly claims every week and report your hours worked. the system calculates everything automatically. don't overthink it

•That's reassuring to hear it can work smoothly. I tend to overthink these things.

•Same here, been getting partial benefits for 4 months without any issues. The key is just being honest about your earnings.

Make sure your employer knows you're filing for partial unemployment. Some employers get weird about it even though it's perfectly legal. Better to be upfront about it than have them find out later.

•Should I tell them before I apply or after I get approved?

Louisa Ramirez
•I'd mention it when you apply. They might get a verification request from Washington ESD anyway, so heads up is courteous.

•My boss was actually supportive when I told him. He understood the hours cut wasn't my fault and the partial benefits helped me stay afloat.

Does anyone know if you can collect partial unemployment indefinitely or is there a time limit? My industry is still recovering and I don't see full hours coming back anytime soon.

•Same 26-week limit applies to partial unemployment as regular unemployment. But the weeks only count when you actually receive benefits, not when you work full-time hours.

Angel Campbell
•So if I have some weeks where I work enough that I don't get benefits, those weeks don't count against my 26?
0 coins
Noland Curtis
•Correct. Only benefit weeks count toward your maximum entitlement.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when my partial claim got flagged for review. Their phone lines are always busy and the online messages take forever to get responses. Eventually used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier - totally worth it to actually talk to a human.

•How long did it take to get through with Claimyr?

•Same day I submitted the request. Way better than spending hours calling Washington ESD directly.

Quick question - do tips count as earnings that need to be reported? I work reduced restaurant hours and still get some tips on the shifts I do work.

Noland Curtis
•Yes, all tips must be reported as earnings. Washington ESD considers tips part of your gross income for benefit calculations.

•Thanks, I figured as much but wanted to make sure. Better safe than sorry with Washington ESD.

Been reading through all these responses and feeling more confident about applying. Sounds like as long as you're honest about earnings and keep looking for additional work, the process is pretty straightforward. Going to start my application this week.

One last tip - take screenshots of your weekly claims after you submit them. If there's ever a dispute about what you reported, having your own records helps a lot with Washington ESD.

•Great advice! I'll definitely start doing that from day one.
