How do I apply for partial unemployment benefits through Washington ESD?
My work hours got cut from 40 to 20 hours per week and I'm struggling to pay bills. I heard you can get partial unemployment if your hours are reduced but I'm not sure how to apply for it through Washington ESD. Do I use the same application as regular unemployment? What information do I need to provide about my reduced hours? I'm worried about messing something up since I've never dealt with unemployment before.

Yes, you apply through the same Washington ESD portal at esd.wa.gov. When you file your weekly claim, you'll report your actual earnings and they'll calculate your partial benefit amount. Make sure to keep track of all your work hours and wages.

•Do I need to provide proof of my hour reduction when I apply or just when I file weekly claims?

•You'll need to provide documentation of your reduced hours during the initial application. Pay stubs showing the reduction are usually sufficient.

I've been doing partial unemployment for 2 months now. The key thing is being accurate with your reported earnings each week. They'll deduct a portion of what you earn from your weekly benefit amount.

•How much do they typically deduct? Like if I make $300 in a week, how much would that reduce my unemployment benefit?

Lukas Fitzgerald
•It depends on your weekly benefit amount, but generally they deduct about 75 cents for every dollar you earn over a small threshold. The exact calculation is on the Washington ESD website.

I had a really hard time getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about partial unemployment. Spent hours on hold and kept getting disconnected. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•How does that work exactly? Do they just call for you or something?

Ev Luca
•They basically navigate the phone system and wait on hold for you, then connect you when they get an agent. Way better than sitting there listening to hold music for hours.

•That actually sounds pretty useful. I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my partial claim.

When applying for partial unemployment, make sure you're still meeting the job search requirements. Even though you're working part-time, you still need to be actively looking for full-time work and documenting your job search activities.

•Wait, I still have to do job searches even though I have a job? That seems weird.

Marcelle Drum
•Yes, because partial unemployment is meant to bridge you back to full-time employment. You need to show you're actively seeking to return to full-time hours or find additional work.

been on partial for 6 months now, its not that complicated once you get the hang of it. just report your hours and wages accurately every week

•Have you had any issues with Washington ESD questioning your reported hours?

•nope, as long as your consistent and honest they dont usually question it. keep your pay stubs just in case though

One important thing - make sure your employer knows you're filing for partial unemployment. Some employers aren't familiar with the process and might think you're trying to game the system. It's completely legal and legitimate.

•My boss was actually the one who suggested I apply for partial unemployment when they had to cut everyone's hours. Said it would help me stay afloat until business picks up again.

•That's reassuring. I was worried my boss might think I was being ungrateful or something.

Does anyone know if there's a minimum number of hours you need to lose to qualify for partial unemployment? My hours went from 35 to 30 per week.

Marcelle Drum
•There's no specific minimum hour reduction required. It's based on your earnings reduction. If your weekly earnings are less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you may be eligible for partial benefits.

•Thanks! I'll definitely apply then. Every little bit helps right now.

I'm in the same boat - hours cut from 32 to 18 per week. The application process was pretty straightforward, but I'm stuck in adjudication now. Been waiting 3 weeks for them to review my case.

Ev Luca
•That's exactly why I used Claimyr - got stuck in adjudication and needed to talk to someone at Washington ESD to understand what was holding up my claim. Much easier than trying to get through on your own.

•I might have to try that. This waiting is killing me financially.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you can. Partial unemployment payments are usually smaller amounts, so getting them deposited directly is more convenient than waiting for a check.

Rajan Walker
•Good thinking. How long does it usually take to get your first partial payment?
0 coins
Lukas Fitzgerald
•Mine took about 2 weeks after my claim was approved. The waiting week still applies even for partial unemployment.

UGH the Washington ESD system is so confusing! I tried to apply online and it kept asking me questions I didn't understand. Like what's the difference between 'able and available' and 'standby' status?
0 coins
Marcelle Drum
•Able and' available means'you re ready to work full-time if 'offered.' Standby is for temporary layoffs where you expect to return to your job. For partial unemployment with reduced hours,'you d typically 'be able andavailable.

Gabriel Ruiz
•Thank you! That makes so much more sense now.

make sure you file your weekly claims on time even if you worked that week. missing a week can mess up your whole claim

•What happens if you're late filing a weekly claim?

•you might lose that weeks benefit and have to call washington esd to reactivate your claim. total pain

Been there! The hardest part for me was calculating my job search requirements. Since I'm working part-time, I wasn't sure how many job contacts I needed to make each week.
0 coins
Marcelle Drum
•The standard job search requirement is 3 job contacts per week, regardless of whether you're on full or partial unemployment. You can use WorkSourceWA to track your activities.

Misterclamation Skyblue
•Thanks! I've been doing 5 contacts per week just to be safe, but good to know the actual requirement.

Just want to add - don't let pride get in the way of applying. I hesitated for weeks because I felt like I should be grateful to still have any job at all. But partial unemployment is there for exactly this situation.

•I needed to hear that. I've been feeling guilty about even considering applying.

•You paid into the system through your taxes and employer contributions. You have every right to use it when you need it.

Quick question - if my hours go back up to full-time, do I need to notify Washington ESD immediately or just stop filing weekly claims?
0 coins
Nadia Zaldivar
•You should report it on your next weekly claim. When you report full-time earnings, your benefit will automatically go to zero and your claim will become inactive.

Peyton Clarke
•Perfect, thanks. Hoping that happens soon!

The income limits are pretty generous for partial unemployment. Even if you think you might make too much, it's worth applying. The worst they can say is no.
0 coins
Rajan Walker
•That's encouraging. I wasn't sure if my reduced hours would be enough of a cut to qualify.

Vince Eh
•The calculation is based on your weekly benefit amount, so it varies by person. But most people with significant hour reductions will qualify for something.

Just to follow up on the Claimyr thing - I ended up using them twice more when I had questions about my partial claim. Really worth it if you're struggling to get through to Washington ESD. Way less stressful than the regular phone system.

For those just starting the process - gather all your recent pay stubs before you begin the application. Having everything ready makes it go much smoother.
0 coins
Rajan Walker
•How many pay stubs should I have ready? Just the most recent ones or should I go back several months?
0 coins
Ezra Beard
•I'd have at least 4-6 weeks worth showing your full hours, plus the recent ones showing your reduced hours. Gives them a clear picture of the change.

One thing that confused me was vacation pay. If you take vacation time during a week when you're on partial unemployment, make sure you report those earnings too.
0 coins
Rajan Walker
•Oh I wouldn't have thought of that. Good to know!

Statiia Aarssizan
•Yeah, any earnings during a claim week need to be reported, even vacation pay or holiday pay.

Does anyone know if seasonal work affects partial unemployment eligibility? My hours are reduced partly because it's the slow season for our business.
0 coins
Marcelle Drum
•Seasonal fluctuations don't disqualify you from partial unemployment. As long as you're still employed but with reduced hours/earnings, you can be eligible regardless of the reason for the reduction.
0 coins
Reginald Blackwell
•That's a relief! I was worried the seasonal nature might complicate things.
