Can I get Washington ESD unemployment benefits for reduced work hours?

My employer cut my hours from 40 to about 15 per week due to slow business. I'm struggling to pay rent and bills with this reduced income. Can I apply for partial unemployment benefits through Washington ESD? I'm still technically employed but making way less than before. Has anyone been in this situation and successfully gotten benefits for reduced hours?

Yes, you can definitely apply for partial unemployment benefits in Washington! As long as you're working less than full-time and earning less than your weekly benefit amount, you may qualify. You'll need to report your weekly earnings when you file your weekly claim, and Washington ESD will calculate a partial benefit.

That's great to hear! Do I apply the same way as regular unemployment or is there a different process?

Same application process through the Washington ESD website. Just make sure to accurately report your reduced hours and wages each week.

I was in the exact same boat last year when my restaurant cut everyone's hours. I applied and got approved for partial benefits. The key is being honest about your hours and wages - don't try to hide anything from Washington ESD.

How long did it take for your claim to get approved? I'm worried about the wait time.

0 coins

Mine took about 2 weeks, but that was pretty standard. Just keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending.

Two weeks? Mine's been in adjudication for over a month! The Washington ESD system is so backed up.

Here's what you need to know about partial unemployment in Washington: You can work up to your weekly benefit amount minus $5 before they start reducing your benefits. So if your weekly benefit amount is $400, you can earn up to $395 without any reduction. After that, they reduce your benefit dollar for dollar.

That's really helpful! How do I figure out what my weekly benefit amount would be?

It's based on your highest earning quarter from the past year. Washington ESD has a calculator on their website, or it'll show you the amount once you apply.

Just a heads up - you'll still need to do job searches each week even though you're working reduced hours. The job search requirements are the same for partial unemployment as regular UI benefits.

0 coins

Wait, really? Even though I already have a job? How many job searches do I need to do?

0 coins

Yep, you still need to look for additional work. I think it's 3 job search activities per week in Washington, but check the current requirements on the Washington ESD site.

0 coins

This seems ridiculous. If someone already has a job, why make them look for more work?

I've been dealing with Washington ESD for months trying to get through to someone about my partial claim. The phone system is impossible! Has anyone found a way to actually talk to a human there?

I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked - got connected within an hour instead of calling for days. Check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

I tried calling at exactly 8am when they open and still couldn't get through. The system is completely overwhelmed.

Make sure you report your hours accurately every week. I made a mistake on one weekly claim and it caused a huge mess with overpayment notices. Washington ESD doesn't mess around with incorrect reporting.

0 coins

Oh no, what kind of mistake did you make? I want to avoid that.

I accidentally put down the wrong number of hours worked one week. They caught it months later and said I owed money back.

Same thing happened to my friend. She had to appeal the overpayment decision. Such a headache.

Been on partial unemployment for 6 months now. It's not much money but it helps cover some bills. Just be prepared for the weekly filing routine and keep detailed records of your work hours and pay.

0 coins

Six months? Is there a limit to how long you can collect partial benefits?

•

Same limits as regular unemployment - you get a certain number of weeks based on your work history. I think mine was 26 weeks total.

Wait, I thought you couldn't get unemployment if you were still working at all? This is news to me.

That's a common misconception! Partial unemployment is specifically for people whose hours or wages have been reduced through no fault of their own.

Yeah I didn't know this either. Wish I had known when my hours got cut last year.

The hardest part is getting approved initially. Washington ESD will want to verify with your employer that your hours were actually reduced and it wasn't voluntary. Make sure your employer knows you might be applying.

0 coins

Should I tell my boss I'm applying for unemployment? I'm worried they might not like that.

You don't have to tell them beforehand, but Washington ESD will contact them as part of the verification process anyway.

Pro tip: Start your application as soon as possible. There's usually a waiting week before benefits start, and if there are any issues with your claim, it can take much longer to resolve.

0 coins

Good point. I've been putting it off but sounds like I should just do it now.

Definitely don't wait. I waited too long and missed out on weeks of benefits I could have gotten.

Just wanted to add - if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone to ask questions about your partial claim, I had good luck with that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. They got me through to an actual person who could explain my benefit calculation.

Is that service legit? Seems too good to be true that they can get you through when calling directly doesn't work.

0 coins

I was skeptical too but it worked for me. They have some system that monitors when agents are available. Much better than hitting redial for hours.

0 coins

One thing to watch out for - if your employer increases your hours back to full-time, you need to report that immediately. Don't keep collecting benefits if you're working full-time again.

0 coins

That makes sense. I hope my hours do go back up eventually.

Yeah, and if they offer you more hours but you turn them down, that could affect your eligibility too.

The Washington ESD website has a good FAQ section about partial unemployment. I'd recommend reading through that before you apply so you know what to expect.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! This has been really helpful. I'm going to start my application tonight.

I used Claimyr when I had questions about my partial claim too. Really helped clarify some confusing stuff about how they calculate benefits when you're working reduced hours. Worth checking out if you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD.

0 coins

How quickly did they get you connected? I've been trying to call for weeks.

Maybe an hour or two? Way faster than trying to call on my own. The video demo on their site shows exactly how it works.

Just remember that partial unemployment is meant to be temporary assistance while you're looking for more work. It's not a long-term solution, but it can definitely help bridge the gap when your hours are cut.

0 coins

Absolutely. I'm hoping this is just temporary until business picks up again at my job.
