How do I file for partial unemployment benefits in Washington?
My hours got cut at work from 40 to about 20-25 per week and I'm struggling to pay my bills. I heard you can file for partial unemployment in Washington but I'm not sure how that works. Do I apply the same way as regular unemployment? Will they reduce my benefits if I'm still working part time? I've never dealt with Washington ESD before so any guidance would be really helpful.

Yes you can definitely file for partial unemployment! The process is the same as filing for regular unemployment through Washington ESD. You'll still need to file your weekly claims and report all hours worked and wages earned. They'll calculate your benefit amount based on what you earn vs what your weekly benefit would be.

•Thank you! Do I need to do anything special when I file or just mention that I'm still working?

•Just file normally and be completely honest about your work hours and pay when you file your weekly claims. The system will automatically calculate if you qualify for partial benefits.

I did this last year when my restaurant cut my shifts. The key thing is you have to report EVERY hour you work and EVERY dollar you earn, even tips. If you don't report accurately they'll hit you with an overpayment later.

•Good to know about reporting tips! I work retail so no tips but I'll make sure to be exact with my hours.

•Yeah they're really strict about this. I got an overpayment notice because I was off by like $30 one week.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about partial unemployment, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helps you actually reach a live agent. They have this system that calls ESD for you and gets you connected. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call myself.

•That sounds really helpful! I was dreading trying to call ESD with all the horror stories I've heard.

•How much does something like that cost? Seems like it might be worth it if it actually works.

•I honestly don't remember the exact cost but it was totally worth it for me. Way better than spending half my day on hold.

The formula is basically if you earn less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you'll get some partial benefits. So if your weekly benefit would be $400 and you earn $200 in a week, you'd still get some unemployment money.

•That makes sense. So it's not dollar for dollar reduction?

Anthony Young
•Exactly. There's some wiggle room built in so working part time doesn't completely eliminate your benefits.

Make sure you keep detailed records of your hours and pay! I kept a little notebook with date, hours worked, and gross pay for every shift. Saved my butt when they questioned something months later.

•Great idea! I'll start doing that right away.

•I use a simple spreadsheet on my phone. Makes it easy to reference when filing weekly claims.

Do you still have to do the job search requirements if you're working partial unemployment? That part always confused me.

Nora Bennett
•Yes, you still need to meet job search requirements unless you're on standby status with your current employer. Usually that means 3 job contacts per week.

•Thanks, that's what I thought but wasn't sure.

•How long did it take for your first payment to come through?

•about 2 weeks after i filed my first weekly claim. not too bad compared to what some people wait

I'm in a similar situation but my employer is being weird about it. They keep changing my schedule at the last minute and I'm worried ESD will think I'm not being truthful about my hours. Has anyone dealt with an unpredictable schedule while on partial unemployment?

Nora Bennett
•Just report exactly what you worked each week. If your schedule varies that's not your fault. Keep any texts or emails about schedule changes as backup.

•Good point about keeping the texts. My manager is always changing things via text so I have proof.

One thing to watch out for - if you start earning too much they'll stop your benefits. But you can always reactivate your claim if your hours get cut again later.

Oscar Murphy
•That's good to know! So it's not like starting over from scratch?

Ryan Andre
•Nope, as long as it's within your benefit year you can just reactive. Much easier than filing a whole new claim.

Quick question - do bonuses or overtime pay affect partial unemployment differently? I might pick up some extra shifts occasionally.

Anthony Young
•All earnings count the same way. Doesn't matter if it's regular pay, overtime, or bonuses. Just report the total gross earnings for that week.

•Perfect, thanks for clarifying that.

If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your specific situation, definitely try that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. I was skeptical at first but it really does work. Got connected to an agent in like 15 minutes instead of calling all day.

•I'm definitely going to look into that. Sounds way better than the usual ESD phone nightmare.

•I used them too after seeing someone mention it here. Worth every penny to actually talk to a human at ESD.

The Washington ESD website has a partial unemployment calculator that can give you an estimate of what you might get. It's under the benefits section somewhere.

Oscar Murphy
•I'll check that out! Good to get an idea before I file.

•Yeah it's pretty accurate. Helped me decide if it was worth filing or not.

Don't forget you'll need your employer information when you file - business name, address, phone number, dates of employment, reason for reduction in hours, etc.

•Thanks for the reminder! I'll gather all that info before I start the application.

my cousin did partial unemployment and said the hardest part was just keeping track of everything. once you get in the routine of reporting accurately its not bad

•That makes me feel better. I was worried it would be super complicated.

One last tip - file your weekly claims on the same day each week if possible. Makes it easier to remember what you earned and worked. I always did mine on Sunday evenings.

Oscar Murphy
•Great advice! I'll pick a day and stick to it.

•Sunday works well because you have the full week to reference. That's what I did too.

If your claim gets stuck in adjudication don't panic. Sometimes they review partial unemployment claims more carefully but it usually works out fine.
0 coins
Oscar Murphy
•Good to know that might happen. How long does adjudication usually take?

Royal_GM_Mark
•Mine took about 3 weeks but I've heard anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on how busy they are.

Washington ESD customer service is terrible but the actual system for filing claims works pretty well once you get used to it.

Oscar Murphy
•That's reassuring! I was worried the whole system would be a mess.

•That's exactly why services like Claimyr are so valuable. The online system works fine but getting help when you need it is nearly impossible otherwise.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! I feel much more confident about filing now. I'm going to gather my employment info and file this week.

Partial unemployment saved me when my hours got cut. Definitely file sooner rather than later - benefits don't backdate very far.
0 coins
Oscar Murphy
•How far back do they backdate if at all?

•I think it's only to the Sunday of the week you file your claim. So don't wait if you qualify.

Make sure your employer isn't going to contest your claim. Most don't for partial unemployment but it's worth mentioning to your manager that you're filing.

Oscar Murphy
•Should I ask them directly or just mention it casually?
0 coins
Rachel Clark
•I'd probably just mention it casually. Most employers understand when they cut hours that people need to file for partial benefits.
