Can you file for partial unemployment benefits with Washington ESD?
I'm working part-time at a restaurant but my hours got cut from 35 to about 15 hours a week. Bills are piling up and I'm wondering if I can file for partial unemployment with Washington ESD while still working these reduced hours? I've never dealt with unemployment before and not sure if partial benefits are even a thing or how it works with reporting wages.

Yes, you absolutely can file for partial unemployment in Washington! It's designed exactly for situations like yours where your hours got reduced. You'll need to report your weekly earnings when you file your weekly claim, and they'll calculate a partial benefit amount.

•That's a relief! Do I apply the same way as regular unemployment or is there a different process?

•Same application process through the Washington ESD website. Just make sure to answer honestly about your part-time work when filling it out.

I did this last year when my retail job cut everyone's hours. The key thing is you have to report every penny you earn each week when you file your weekly claim. Washington ESD will reduce your benefit amount based on how much you made, but you'll still get something if your earnings are low enough.

•How much do they reduce it by? Is it dollar for dollar or is there some kind of formula?

Mei-Ling Chen
•It's not dollar for dollar thankfully. I think they let you keep the first $5 plus a quarter of what you earn above that before reducing benefits. But don't quote me on the exact numbers - check the Washington ESD website for current rates.

Just went through this myself! Had to call Washington ESD to get clarity on reporting my wages correctly because I was confused about gross vs net pay. Calling them is a nightmare though - took me literally 47 attempts over 3 days to get through. Finally found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to an agent in under 10 minutes. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

•47 attempts?! That's insane. I was dreading having to call them. How much does that Claimyr thing cost?

Sofía Rodríguez
•Worth every penny when you consider the alternative of spending days trying to get through. Plus they connect you to the right department instead of getting transferred around.

•Never heard of Claimyr but might need to try it. Been trying to reach Washington ESD for a week about my adjudication status.

Make sure you understand the work search requirements too. Even with partial unemployment you still need to be looking for work and documenting your job search activities. I made the mistake of thinking I didn't need to since I was already working part-time.

Lena Kowalski
•Wait, I still have to job search even though I'm working? That seems weird.

Zoe Papadopoulos
•Yeah, the logic is that you're receiving benefits because you need more work, so you need to show you're actively seeking it. Three work search activities per week I believe.

partial unemployment saved my butt when covid hit and my hours got slashed. just be super careful about reporting your earnings accurately because they WILL catch discrepancies and hit you with an overpayment notice later.

Lena Kowalski
•What kind of discrepancies? Like if I accidentally report the wrong amount one week?

Jamal Brown
•anything really - wrong gross amount, forgetting to report tips, reporting net instead of gross. they cross-reference with employer wage reports so everything has to match up perfectly.

Pro tip: keep detailed records of all your earnings, hours worked, and when you report them. Screenshot your weekly claim submissions too. Makes everything easier if questions come up later during an audit or review.

•Good idea on the screenshots. I'll start doing that from day one.

•Yes definitely keep records! I got audited 6 months after my claim ended and needed all that documentation.

The partial unemployment thing is great in theory but Washington ESD's system is so glitchy. Half the time my weekly claims wouldn't go through and I'd have to call to fix it. Spent more time dealing with their broken website than actually job searching.

Lena Kowalski
•That's concerning. Is the website really that bad?

•It's gotten better since 2020 but still has issues. Clear your cache regularly and don't wait until Sunday night to file your weekly claim.

•This is exactly when Claimyr becomes valuable - when you need to actually talk to someone to fix system glitches instead of being stuck in phone queue hell.

One thing to watch out for - if your part-time wages are too high, you might not qualify for any benefits that week. There's a threshold where if you earn over a certain amount, your benefit goes to zero. But you still need to file the weekly claim to keep your claim active.
0 coins
Lena Kowalski
•How do I know what that threshold is? I don't want to waste time filing if I'm not going to get anything.
0 coins
Mei-Ling Chen
•It depends on your weekly benefit amount. Generally if you earn more than 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount, you'll get zero. But still file anyway to keep your claim active.

The restaurant industry is tough right now with all the staffing issues. Have you considered looking for additional part-time work to supplement? You can work multiple part-time jobs and still collect partial unemployment as long as you report all earnings.

Lena Kowalski
•I've thought about it but worried about the scheduling conflicts. Plus would that affect my benefits calculation?
0 coins
Zoe Papadopoulos
•It's just about total weekly earnings regardless of how many jobs. Two part-time jobs earning $200 total is the same as one job earning $200 for benefit calculation purposes.

Make sure your employer knows you're filing for partial unemployment. Some employers get weird about it even though it's totally legal and doesn't cost them anything extra. Better to be upfront than have them find out later.

Lena Kowalski
•Do I legally have to tell them? I'm worried my manager might not understand and think I'm planning to quit.

Fatima Al-Rashid
•You don't HAVE to tell them upfront, but Washington ESD will contact them anyway as part of the verification process. Better they hear it from you first.

been there done that with partial unemployment. biggest pain was remembering to file every single week even when i barely got any money. miss one week and you have to call to reopen your claim.

Lena Kowalski
•What happens if you forget to file one week? Can you file it late?
0 coins
Giovanni Rossi
•you can file late claims but its a hassle and might delay your payments. set a phone reminder for sunday mornings or whenever you usually file.

Washington ESD also has a partial unemployment fact sheet on their website that breaks down all the rules and calculations. Definitely worth reading before you file your initial claim. It's in the 'Types of Benefits' section.

Lena Kowalski
•I'll look that up right now. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

honestly the hardest part about partial unemployment isnt the filing its dealing with the guilt. felt weird collecting benefits while working but then realized its exactly what the program is designed for - helping people who want to work full time but cant find the hours.
0 coins
Lena Kowalski
•I'm definitely feeling that guilt factor. Good to know it's normal and that this is what the program is for.

•No shame in using a program you paid into through your taxes! That's what it's there for.

Quick update on the Claimyr thing - used it again yesterday to ask about reporting tip income correctly for partial claims. Agent was super helpful and knew exactly what I was asking about. Way better than playing phone tag for days.

•OK you've convinced me to try it. My adjudication has been pending for 3 weeks and I need answers.

Word of warning - some employers try to mess with your hours to keep you just under the threshold for unemployment benefits. Document your actual schedule vs what you were promised when hired. Happened to a friend of mine.

Lena Kowalski
•That's shady but I could see it happening. I'll keep track of my actual vs scheduled hours just in case.

•Yeah it's illegal but hard to prove without documentation. Better to be prepared.

The nice thing about partial unemployment is it gives you a safety net while you look for better work. I used it as a bridge until I found a full-time position. Just remember you're still required to accept suitable full-time work if offered.

Lena Kowalski
•Define 'suitable work' - does it have to be in restaurants or just anything full-time?

Mei-Ling Chen
•Generally work that matches your skills and experience at prevailing wages. They can't force you to take a huge pay cut, but you can't be too picky either.

Applied for partial unemployment last month and got approved within a week. The key is being thorough in your initial application - explain your situation clearly and provide all requested documentation upfront.

Lena Kowalski
•A week seems fast! I was expecting it to take forever based on horror stories I've heard.

•I think partial claims move faster because they're more straightforward than full unemployment claims. Less fraud risk maybe?

Final piece of advice - consider this an opportunity to upskill while you're working reduced hours. Washington ESD has training programs that might help you qualify for better positions. Worth looking into their WorkSource services.

•That's actually a great idea. I've been wanting to learn some new skills but never had the time. This might be the perfect opportunity.

One last tip - set up direct deposit if you qualify for benefits. Paper checks take forever and can get lost in the mail. You can set this up during the application process or add it later through your online account.

Lena Kowalski
•Definitely doing direct deposit. I don't trust the mail with something that important.

•Smart choice. My first check got lost in the mail and it was a nightmare to get it reissued.
