Can you collect unemployment if you are not getting enough hours at Washington ESD?
I'm working part-time at a retail store but they've been cutting everyone's hours drastically. I'm only getting like 15-20 hours a week when I used to get 35+ hours. My bills are piling up and I can barely afford rent. Can I file for partial unemployment benefits through Washington ESD even though I'm still technically employed? I don't really understand how this works and I'm scared to mess something up.

Yes, you can definitely apply for partial unemployment benefits in Washington if your hours have been reduced! This is exactly what partial UI is designed for. You'll need to report your weekly earnings when you file your weekly claim, and Washington ESD will calculate a partial benefit amount based on what you're earning versus your full benefit amount.

•Oh wow, I had no idea this was even possible! Do I apply the same way as regular unemployment?

•Yes, same application process through the Washington ESD website. Just make sure to report all your hours and earnings accurately each week.

I've been dealing with partial unemployment for months now. The key thing is you have to earn less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5 to qualify. So if your weekly benefit would be $400, you can earn up to $405 and still get some partial benefits. But honestly, getting through to Washington ESD to ask questions about your specific situation is nearly impossible with their phone system.

•This is so frustrating! I've been trying to call for weeks about my partial claim and can never get through.

•I actually found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual Washington ESD agent. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works.

•That's not great advice - you should understand the requirements first to avoid any issues with your claim.

To qualify for partial unemployment in Washington, you need to have earned enough in your base period (first four of the last five quarters) and your current weekly earnings must be less than your weekly benefit amount. The formula is: Weekly Benefit Amount - (Weekly Earnings - $5) = Partial Benefit. So if you normally get $300/week and earn $100 this week, you'd get $205 in partial benefits.

•This is super helpful! So I should definitely apply then since I'm only making about $240 a week now.

•Wait, do you have to actively look for work if you're on partial unemployment? I'm confused about the job search requirements.

Max Reyes
•Yes, you still need to meet job search requirements - 3 job search activities per week in Washington unless you're on standby with your current employer.

THE SYSTEM IS SO BROKEN!!! I've been trying to get partial benefits for my reduced hours and it's been a nightmare. Filed 3 weeks ago and still stuck in adjudication. Nobody at Washington ESD will help or even explain what's happening with my claim!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about happening. How long are you supposed to wait?

•That's another situation where Claimyr really helped me. When my claim was stuck, I used their service to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD who could look at my account and explain the delay.

I'm in a similar situation but I'm scared to apply because I don't want to lose my job. Can my employer find out if I file for partial unemployment?

•Your employer will receive notice that you've filed a claim, but this is normal and legal. You're protected from retaliation for filing unemployment benefits.

•Ok that makes me feel better. I really need the extra money to survive.

Does anyone know if you can get partial unemployment if you're working two part-time jobs? One cut my hours but the other stayed the same.
0 coins
Max Reyes
•Yes, you report combined earnings from both jobs. As long as your total weekly earnings are less than your benefit amount plus $5, you may qualify for partial benefits.

Adrian Connor
•Good to know, I'll definitely apply then.

Make sure you understand the difference between being on standby versus regular partial unemployment. If your employer put you on a temporary layoff with an expected return date, that's different from permanently reduced hours. The job search requirements are different too.

Felicity Bud
•What's the difference exactly? My manager said the hour cuts might be permanent.

Ryder Everingham
•If it's permanent reduction, you're on regular partial UI and need to do job searches. If temporary with return date, you might be on standby status and wouldn't need to search for work.

ugh the weekly claims are so annoying though, you have to remember to file every week

•Set a reminder on your phone for the same day each week. Missing a weekly claim can cause payment delays.

Been on partial for 6 months now. It's been a lifesaver honestly. Just make sure you report your earnings accurately every week - even $1 off can cause problems.

•Gross earnings before taxes are taken out.

UPDATE: I tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned and it actually worked! Got through to Washington ESD in like 20 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. They explained my partial claim situation and it's finally processing now.

One more question - how long does it usually take for partial unemployment to get approved in Washington?
0 coins
Max Reyes
•If everything is straightforward, usually 2-3 weeks. But if there are any issues or it goes to adjudication, it can take much longer.
0 coins
Lindsey Fry
•Mine took about 10 days but that was before all the recent backlogs.

Thanks everyone for this info! I had no idea partial unemployment was even a thing. My restaurant cut everyone's shifts and I've been struggling to pay bills.

Max Reyes
•Definitely apply! Restaurant workers often qualify since hour cuts are so common in that industry.

For anyone applying for partial unemployment, make sure you have documentation of your reduced hours. Save your work schedules, pay stubs, anything that shows the change in your employment situation.

•Great tip! I have all my old pay stubs showing when I was getting more hours.

Update on my situation - finally got through to Washington ESD (using that Claimyr service someone recommended) and my adjudication was just because they needed to verify my employer info. Should be resolved soon!

Just remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income so you might want to have taxes withheld or set aside money for tax time.

Felicity Bud
•Oh good point, I wouldn't have thought of that!

Lindsey Fry
•Yeah I learned that the hard way my first year on unemployment. You can elect to have taxes taken out when you file your weekly claims.
