How to file partial unemployment with Washington ESD - reduced hours situation
My employer cut my hours from 40 to 18 per week and I'm struggling to make ends meet. I heard I might qualify for partial unemployment benefits but I'm completely lost on how to file with Washington ESD. Do I file a regular unemployment claim or is there a separate process for partial benefits? I'm still employed but these reduced hours are killing me financially. Anyone know the steps for filing partial unemployment in Washington?

You file the same regular unemployment claim through the Washington ESD website. When you do your weekly claims, you just report the hours and wages you earned that week. The system automatically calculates your partial benefit amount based on your earnings.

•That's it? Just file like a regular claim? I thought there would be some special partial unemployment form or something.

•Nope, it's all the same initial application process. The difference only shows up when you do your weekly claims reporting.

Make sure you report your part-time wages accurately on your weekly claims. Washington ESD has a formula where they subtract your earnings from your weekly benefit amount, but you can usually still get some benefits if you're working reduced hours.

•Do you know what the formula is? Like how much can I earn before they cut off my benefits completely?

•I think it's something like they subtract your gross earnings minus $5 from your weekly benefit amount, but don't quote me on the exact numbers. The Washington ESD website has the current formula.

Just went through this process myself last month. Had similar situation where my restaurant cut everyone's hours. I used Claimyr to get through to an actual Washington ESD agent who walked me through the whole partial unemployment process. Way easier than trying to figure it out from the website alone. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•Never heard of Claimyr before. Is it like a service that helps you call Washington ESD?

•Yeah exactly - claimyr.com helps you get through to actual agents instead of sitting on hold forever. Super helpful for getting specific questions answered about partial benefits.

I'm in the exact same boat! My hours got cut from 35 to 22 and I've been putting off filing because I wasn't sure if I'd even qualify. This thread is so helpful.

•Definitely file! Even if you only get a partial benefit, every bit helps when your hours are cut that drastically.

•Going to start my application tonight. Thanks for the encouragement!

One thing to watch out for - you still have to meet the job search requirements even for partial unemployment. Don't skip that part thinking it doesn't apply to you since you're still working.

•Wait really? I have to look for other jobs even though I already have one?

Sara Hellquiem
•Yep, unless you're on standby status expecting to return to full hours. Most partial unemployment claimants still need to do the job search activities.

Freya Collins
•This is correct. The job search requirement applies to most unemployment claims, partial or otherwise.

been filing partial for 3 months now, its not that complicated once you get the hang of it. just be super accurate with reporting your hours and wages or they'll flag your claim

Eloise Kendrick
•What happens if they flag it? Just extra verification or something worse?

Charlee Coleman
•usually just means they want to verify your earnings with your employer. can delay your payments though so better to be accurate from the start

Pro tip: keep detailed records of your work schedule and paystubs. Washington ESD might ask for verification of your reduced hours situation, especially if your employer disputes the claim.

Eloise Kendrick
•Would my employer dispute it? I mean, they're the ones who cut my hours.

Lucas Schmidt
•Most employers don't dispute legitimate partial claims, but it's always good to have documentation just in case.

The Washington ESD system is SO confusing for partial unemployment! I tried to figure it out myself and ended up making mistakes on my first few weekly claims.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - saved me from making those kinds of mistakes by talking to someone who actually knew the system.

•Wish I had known about that option earlier. Would have saved me a lot of stress and confusion.

File ASAP! There's usually a waiting week for unemployment benefits, so the sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving payments. Don't wait thinking your situation might improve.

•Good point. My manager keeps saying hours might go back to normal 'soon' but it's been 6 weeks already.

Leeann Blackstein
•Exactly - and you can always stop claiming if your hours do go back up. Better to have the safety net in place.

Make sure you understand the difference between gross and net wages when reporting. Washington ESD wants your gross earnings (before taxes) for the weekly claim calculations.

Eloise Kendrick
•So I report what I earned before taxes get taken out, not my take-home pay?
0 coins
Freya Collins
•Correct - always report gross wages. That's what they use for the benefit calculation formula.

ugh the washington esd website is such a pain to navigate. took me forever to find where to actually start the application process

•The main page has a big 'Apply for Benefits' button, but I agree the site layout isn't very intuitive.

•yeah i eventually found it but man they could make it clearer for people who are already stressed about money

Update on my situation - got my first partial payment this week and it made a huge difference. The agent I talked to through Claimyr explained that partial benefits can sometimes be more complicated to calculate, so having that direct contact was really valuable.

Eloise Kendrick
•That's encouraging! About how long did the whole process take from filing to getting your first payment?

•About 3 weeks total, including the waiting week. Pretty standard timeline for Washington ESD claims.

Don't forget you can also apply for food assistance and other programs while dealing with reduced income. Partial unemployment qualifies you for some additional support programs.

Eloise Kendrick
•I hadn't thought about that. Are there specific programs that work well with partial unemployment?

Carmella Fromis
•SNAP benefits often complement partial unemployment well since both consider your reduced income situation.

Important note: if you're getting partial benefits and then your hours get cut even more (or you lose the job entirely), you need to report that change immediately. Don't wait for your next weekly claim.

Eloise Kendrick
•How do you report changes like that? Is there a specific form or do you just call Washington ESD?
0 coins
Sara Hellquiem
•You can report changes through your online account, but major changes like complete job loss might need a phone call to ensure proper processing.

been doing partial unemployment for almost 6 months now. biggest tip is to be patient with the system - sometimes payments get delayed for random verification stuff but they always come through eventually

Eloise Kendrick
•6 months?! I hope my situation doesn't last that long. Has your employer given any indication about returning to normal hours?

•its retail so depends on the season. partial unemployment has been a lifesaver though - couldn't have made it without those extra payments

Quick question - do you still get the job search requirement waived if you're on partial unemployment but your employer says you'll return to full hours eventually?
0 coins
Sara Hellquiem
•That depends on whether you qualify for standby status. If Washington ESD approves standby, then yes, job search is waived. But most partial unemployment situations don't automatically qualify for standby.

AaliyahAli
•Ah okay, so I probably still need to do job searches. Thanks for clarifying!

The whole partial unemployment thing saved my finances when my hours got slashed. Don't let pride keep you from filing - you paid into the system through your taxes, so use it when you need it.
0 coins
Eloise Kendrick
•Thanks for saying that. I was feeling a bit weird about filing since I'm still technically employed.

•That's exactly what the system is designed for - helping people when their employment situation changes, whether that's complete job loss or reduced hours.

Final thought - if you're still confused about any part of the partial unemployment process, seriously consider using a service like Claimyr to talk to an actual Washington ESD representative. The peace of mind of getting accurate information directly from the source is worth it.
