How much does unemployment pay in Washington state - just got approved

Finally got my Washington ESD claim approved after waiting 6 weeks! I'm trying to figure out exactly how much I'll be getting each week. My base year earnings were around $52,000 but I'm not sure how they calculate the weekly benefit amount. Does anyone know the formula they use? Also wondering if there are any deductions I should expect from the payments.

Washington ESD uses your highest quarter earnings from your base year to calculate benefits. They take your highest quarter, divide by 26, then you get about 50% of that amount weekly. Maximum benefit right now is $999/week.

0 coins

Thanks! So if my highest quarter was like $15,000 that would be around $288 per week?

0 coins

Yeah that sounds about right. You can check your exact amount in your Washington ESD account under benefit details.

0 coins

congrats on getting approved!! i've been waiting forever for mine to process

0 coins

Hang in there! Mine took way longer than expected but it finally went through.

0 coins

The weekly benefit amount is calculated using your two highest quarters in your base year. Washington ESD takes the average of those quarters, divides by 26, and that's your weekly amount before any deductions. Federal taxes aren't automatically withheld unless you request it.

0 coins

Wait I thought it was just the highest quarter? I'm so confused about how they calculate this stuff.

0 coins

You're right to be confused - Washington changed their calculation method a few years ago. It used to be highest quarter only, now it's average of two highest quarters.

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD to get this explained. Ended up using Claimyr to actually reach someone who could walk me through the calculation. Their service at claimyr.com was a lifesaver - you can see how it works in their demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

FINALLY someone else who got approved! This whole process has been a nightmare. How long did your adjudication take?

0 coins

About 6 weeks total from when I first applied. The adjudication part was maybe 3 weeks of that.

0 coins

Ugh mine's been in adjudication for 2 months now. Did you have to submit any extra documents?

0 coins

Your benefit amount also depends on if you have any partial earnings from part-time work. Washington ESD deducts earnings over $5 from your weekly benefit.

0 coins

This is important! I made the mistake of not reporting some small gig work and got an overpayment notice later.

0 coins

Good to know - I don't have any other income right now but I'll keep that in mind if I pick up any freelance work.

the benefit calculator on washington esd website is pretty accurate if you want to estimate before your first payment

0 coins

I tried that but couldn't find it on their site. Do you have a direct link?

0 coins

I think they removed the calculator tool. You have to look at your claim details in your SAW account to see the exact amount.

0 coins

Don't forget you'll need to file weekly claims to actually get paid! And make sure you're doing your job search activities - Washington requires 3 job contacts per week.

0 coins

Yeah I got the WorkSourceWA registration done already. Do I need to log all my job search activities somewhere?

0 coins

Keep your own log with dates, company names, and contact info. Washington ESD can audit your job search records anytime.

0 coins

I learned this the hard way when they suspended my benefits for not having proper job search documentation. Had to appeal and everything.

0 coins

My sister's been getting $445/week on unemployment. She made about $38k last year so that seems to match what others are saying about the calculation.

0 coins

That does sound right. The formula works out to roughly 50% of your average weekly earnings from your base year.

0 coins

Anyone know if the benefit amounts are going up this year? Cost of living has gone up so much but my weekly amount seems low compared to my expenses.

0 coins

Maximum benefit went up from $985 to $999 this year but that's about it. Your individual amount is still based on your earnings history.

0 coins

Yeah the increases are pretty minimal. My rent alone is more than my weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

Make sure to request federal tax withholding if you want it! I forgot to do that and ended up owing a bunch at tax time.

0 coins

How do I set that up? Is it in the weekly claim or somewhere else?

0 coins

You can change it in your Washington ESD account under tax withholding options. They'll take out 10% for federal taxes.

0 coins

I'm still waiting for my monetary determination letter. Been 3 weeks since I applied and nothing yet. This is so frustrating!

0 coins

Have you tried calling to check on the status? I know their phone lines are always busy but sometimes you can get through.

0 coins

I've tried calling dozens of times but never get through. Just busy signals or get hung up on after waiting.

0 coins

I had the same problem until someone told me about Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Worth checking out at claimyr.com - they have a demo video that shows exactly how it works.

Question about the base year - mine ended in September 2024 but I didn't apply until January 2025. Does that affect my benefit calculation?

0 coins

No, your base year is already established when you file. Washington ESD looks at the four quarters before your claim effective date to determine your base year.

0 coins

I was worried about the same thing but my benefits were calculated normally even though I waited a few months to apply.

0 coins

Does anyone know if overtime pay counts toward the benefit calculation? I worked a lot of OT in my highest earning quarters.

0 coins

Yes, all wages reported to Washington ESD count including overtime, bonuses, and commissions. It's based on your total quarterly earnings.

0 coins

Great! That should help my weekly amount then since I had some really high overtime quarters.

0 coins

The waiting week is gone now right? I heard they eliminated that requirement during COVID.

0 coins

Correct, Washington eliminated the waiting week permanently. You can get paid for your first week as long as you file your weekly claim on time.

0 coins

That's such a relief. I remember having to wait that extra week before and it was really tough financially.

0 coins

Just a heads up - your benefit year lasts 12 months from when you filed, not from when you got approved. So even if approval took a while, your benefit year clock started ticking when you first applied.

0 coins

Good to know! So I have one year from my original application date to use up my benefit weeks?

0 coins

Exactly. And you get up to 26 weeks of benefits during that year, depending on your earnings history.

0 coins

If you get a job while collecting, make sure you report ALL earnings even if it's just a few hours. Washington ESD will find out eventually and you could face an overpayment.

0 coins

This is so important! My friend got hit with a $3000 overpayment because she didn't report some cash work she did.

0 coins

Definitely will be careful about that. Better to be safe and report everything than deal with overpayment issues later.

0 coins

Has anyone had luck getting through to Washington ESD to ask about their calculation? I think mine might be wrong but can't reach anyone to check.

0 coins

I was having the same issue until I found Claimyr. They help you actually connect with Washington ESD agents instead of getting stuck in phone tree hell. Made all the difference for me.

0 coins

I'll look into that. Getting through on my own has been impossible.

0 coins

Yeah their phone system is terrible. Even when you do get through after hours of waiting, they sometimes just hang up on you.

Remember you can appeal your monetary determination if you think the benefit amount is calculated wrong. You have 30 days from the date on your determination letter.

0 coins

Good to know there's an appeal option. Hopefully I won't need it but it's nice to have that safety net.

0 coins

I had to appeal mine because they missed some wages from a previous employer. Took a few weeks but they corrected it and gave me back pay.

0 coins

One more thing - if you move to another state while collecting Washington unemployment, you can usually continue getting benefits but need to register with that state's workforce agency for job search requirements.

0 coins

Really? I might be moving to Oregon for a job opportunity but wasn't sure if I'd lose my benefits.

0 coins

You should be able to continue as long as you stay eligible and meet job search requirements in the new state. Worth confirming with Washington ESD though.

0 coins

Thanks for posting this question! I just got approved too and was wondering the same things. This thread has been really helpful.

0 coins

Glad it helped! This community has been great for getting real answers about the unemployment process.

0 coins

Agreed! So much better than trying to navigate the Washington ESD website or sit on hold for hours.
