How much do you get for unemployment benefits in Washington ESD weekly payments?
I'm thinking about filing for unemployment but want to know what to expect payment wise. Does anyone know how much Washington ESD pays per week? I was making about $4,200 a month at my last job before I got laid off. Just trying to figure out if it's worth the hassle of filing or if I should just focus on job hunting full time.

The weekly benefit amount depends on your earnings during your base period. Washington ESD calculates it based on your highest quarter earnings. Maximum weekly benefit in 2025 is $999 plus a $25 dependency allowance if you have dependents. You can use the benefit calculator on their website to get an estimate.

•Thanks! I'll check out the calculator. Do you know if they use gross or net income for the calculation?

Zainab Omar
•They use gross wages reported by employers. The formula is roughly 3.85% of total base period wages divided by 52, but it's capped at the maximum.

I just got approved and I'm getting $847 per week. I was making around $75k annually. The amount seems pretty fair compared to other states I've heard about. Definitely file if you qualify - every week you don't file is money you're leaving on the table.

•How long did it take for your claim to get approved? I'm still waiting on adjudication.

•Mine took about 2 weeks. No complications though, just a straightforward layoff.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to ask about benefit amounts or check your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you actually reach an agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•Is that legit? I've been trying to call for weeks about my benefit calculation.

•Yeah it worked for me. Much better than sitting on hold forever or getting the busy signal.

•Same here! Filed in December and still haven't gotten my first payment. The uncertainty is killing me.

•Have you tried calling? I know it's frustrating but sometimes they can expedite things if there's an issue.

Just to clarify the calculation - Washington ESD looks at your base period which is the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before you filed. They take your highest earning quarter and calculate 3.85% of those earnings for your weekly benefit amount. There's also a minimum of $295 per week if you qualify.

•What if you worked multiple jobs? Do they combine all the wages?
0 coins
Zainab Omar
•Yes, they combine wages from all employers reported during your base period.

•This is helpful info. I had 3 part-time jobs so wasn't sure how that would work.

I'm getting $623 weekly which isn't bad. Way more than I expected honestly. The key is making sure you file your weekly claims on time and keep up with the job search requirements. Missing a week can delay everything.

•How many job contacts do you need per week for the job search requirement?

Yara Sayegh
•It's 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking events, job fairs, etc. Keep good records!

The dependency allowance is worth mentioning too. If you have dependents you can get an extra $25 per week per dependent, up to 5 dependents. So potentially an extra $125 weekly on top of your regular benefit amount.

•Do stepchildren count as dependents for this?

•I believe so if they live with you and you claim them on taxes, but you'd need to verify with Washington ESD.

Still can't get through to anyone at Washington ESD about my benefit calculation. This is ridiculous. Going to try that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier.

•Definitely try it! I used Claimyr when I needed to talk to someone about my weekly benefit amount and it worked great. Much better than the endless busy signals.

•Let us know if it works for you. I might try it too if my adjudication doesn't move soon.

Does the benefit amount change if you do part-time work while collecting? I might have a chance at some freelance work but don't want to mess up my claim.

•You can work part-time but need to report all earnings on your weekly claim. They'll reduce your benefit by a portion of what you earn, but there's usually some incentive to work.

Isabella Santos
•Good to know. I'll make sure to report everything accurately.

Been collecting for 2 months now and getting $712 per week. The payments come through direct deposit pretty reliably once you get set up. Just make sure your bank info is correct in your account.

•How long after you file your weekly claim do you usually get paid?

Ravi Gupta
•Usually 2-3 business days for me. Sometimes faster if there are no issues with the claim.

finally got through to someone after using claimyr and found out my benefit amount is $891 weekly. wish i had tried that service weeks ago instead of wasting time calling

•That's a good benefit amount! How long were you employed before filing?

•about 18 months at my last job making decent money in tech

Keep in mind the benefit amount also depends on when you file. If you wait too long after becoming unemployed, you might lose some weeks of eligibility. File as soon as you're eligible even if you're not sure about the amount.

•This is important advice. I waited 3 weeks to file thinking I'd find another job quickly and regretted it.

Omar Fawaz
•Exactly. You can always cancel the claim if you find work immediately, but you can't get those back weeks if you wait too long.

The benefit estimator on Washington ESD's website is pretty accurate. I used it before filing and my actual amount was within $15 of the estimate. Definitely worth checking out to get an idea.

•Where exactly is the estimator on their site? I can never find anything easily on there.

•It's under 'Unemployment Benefits' then 'Calculate Your Weekly Benefit Amount'. The site navigation is pretty confusing I agree.

My cousin in Oregon gets way less than what people are posting here for Washington. Seems like Washington ESD has decent benefit amounts compared to other states I've heard about.

•Yeah Washington's maximum is higher than most states. The cost of living here makes it necessary though.

•True, $800-900 per week sounds like a lot but rent alone eats up most of that in Seattle.

Don't forget about taxes! The unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can have taxes withheld or pay quarterly/annually. Something to factor into your budgeting.

Luca Romano
•Good point! I forgot about that. How much do they typically withhold for taxes?
0 coins
Zara Rashid
•You can choose 10% federal withholding. State doesn't have income tax so no withholding needed for that.

Just want to add that if you're getting significantly less than expected, it might be worth calling to make sure they have all your wage information. Sometimes employers don't report everything correctly.

Mateo Hernandez
•How would you know if wages weren't reported correctly?

Nia Jackson
•You can request a wage statement from Washington ESD that shows what employers reported. Compare it to your pay stubs.

For anyone wondering - the benefit amount stays the same throughout your benefit year unless your circumstances change significantly. So once it's established, you know what to expect each week.

Ethan Taylor
•That's reassuring. At least there's some predictability in the process.

Yuki Ito
•Yeah, unlike everything else about dealing with Washington ESD which seems completely unpredictable!

Thanks everyone for all the info! Sounds like I should definitely file. Based on what people are saying I should expect somewhere around $750-850 per week which would definitely help while I'm job hunting.

•Definitely file soon! And remember to keep track of your job search activities from day one. Good luck with everything!

One last thing - if you're not sure about your benefit amount or have questions during the process, don't hesitate to get help. Whether it's calling Washington ESD directly or using something like Claimyr to reach them, getting accurate information early saves a lot of headaches later.
