How much do u get unemployment in Washington - what's the weekly benefit amount?
hey everyone, just got laid off last week and need to file for unemployment. does anyone know how much washington esd pays per week? i was making about $4200/month before taxes at my warehouse job. trying to figure out if its worth it or if i should just focus on finding work instead. also heard theres a waiting week? is that still a thing?

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter from the past 18 months. The maximum weekly benefit is $999 in 2025, but most people get between $200-600 depending on their previous wages. Since you made $4200/month, you'd probably qualify for a decent amount. There's no waiting week anymore - they eliminated that a few years ago.

•thanks! so they look at my best quarter not my most recent pay? that might actually help since i got a raise 6 months ago

•Yeah the base year calculation can work in your favor sometimes. They take your two highest quarters and divide by 26 to get your weekly amount.

You definitely should file! Even if you find work quickly, having that safety net is important. The process takes a few weeks to get your first payment anyway. I was making similar money and got $687/week when I filed last year.

•wow thats more than i expected. how long did it take to get approved?

•About 3 weeks for me, but I had a straightforward layoff. Some people wait longer if there's adjudication issues.

The maximum duration is 26 weeks of benefits in Washington, but that can be extended during high unemployment periods. You'll need to file weekly claims and meet job search requirements - 3 job contacts per week minimum. Make sure you apply online at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible since benefits are backdated to your application date, not when you were laid off.

•good to know about the job search thing. do they actually check up on that?

•Yes, they can audit your job search log at any time. Keep detailed records of where you applied, when, and any responses. WorkSourceWA is a good place to find jobs and document your search.

•Try calling right at 8am when they open, but honestly I found claimyr.com after weeks of frustration. They help you get through to Washington ESD agents - there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of redialing.

•never heard of that service, does it actually work? seems too good to be true

•I was skeptical too but it worked for me. They handle the calling and waiting, then connect you when an agent picks up. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

just be prepared for the system to be confusing. they use all these acronyms and the website isnt super user friendly. took me forever to figure out how to file my weekly claims correctly

Oliver Wagner
•what kind of acronyms? want to be prepared

•UI means unemployment insurance, adjudication is when they investigate something on your claim, able and available means you're ready to work. stuff like that

•Don't forget about the waiting period after you file - even though there's no waiting week, it still takes time to process your initial claim.

i got $423/week when i filed 3 months ago. was making about $3800/month before i got laid off from retail management. the amount varies a lot based on your work history

Oliver Wagner
•that seems low compared to what the other person said they got. is there a minimum amount?
0 coins
Freya Pedersen
•yeah the minimum is like $295 i think. depends on how much you made in your base period quarters

One thing to watch out for - if you have any separation issues like being fired or quitting, that can delay your claim. They'll put it in adjudication to investigate. Layoffs are usually straightforward though.

•mine was definitely a layoff, company closed our whole department. should be ok then?

Emma Thompson
•Yeah that sounds clean cut. Just make sure you report it accurately when you file.

•even layoffs can get complicated if the employer contests it. happened to my friend and took 2 months to resolve

the whole system is broken IMO. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment and they never explained why. meanwhile bills keep coming. washington esd needs to fix their processes

•I understand the frustration, but most claims are processed within 2-3 weeks. Extended delays usually happen when there are eligibility questions that need investigation.

•tell that to the thousands of people still waiting. system is overwhelmed and understaffed

make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even if your initial claim is still pending! i made that mistake and lost 2 weeks of benefits because i thought i had to wait

Oliver Wagner
•good tip! so you file weekly claims right away even before getting approved?
0 coins
Diego Vargas
•exactly! you can file weekly claims as soon as you submit your initial application

Also remember that unemployment is taxable income. You can have them withhold taxes or pay quarterly. I learned that the hard way at tax time last year.

Oliver Wagner
•ugh didnt even think about taxes. how much do they withhold?
0 coins
CosmicCruiser
•I think it's 10% federal if you opt for withholding. Washington doesn't have state income tax so that's not an issue.

•i agree it shouldn't be necessary, but when you're stuck waiting for benefits it's worth it. they handle all the calling frustration for you

been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years. first time got $534/week, second time got $612/week because my wages had gone up. the calculation is complicated but generally more recent higher wages = higher benefits

Oliver Wagner
•thats helpful context. sounds like i should expect somewhere in the 500-700 range based on my income

Zara Rashid
•probably yeah. just file as soon as you can, the sooner you apply the sooner payments start
