Washington ESD unemployment benefit amounts - how much can I expect?
I'm about to file for unemployment after getting laid off from my warehouse job last week. I was making about $19/hour working full time. Does anyone know how much Washington ESD pays for weekly benefits? I've heard different amounts from coworkers and I'm trying to figure out my budget while I look for work. Also wondering if there's a maximum amount they pay regardless of what you were earning?

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest earning quarter from the past year. It's roughly 3.85% of your total wages in that quarter, but there's a minimum of $295 and maximum of $999 per week as of 2025. At $19/hour full time you'd probably get somewhere around $450-550 weekly depending on your exact earnings history.

•That's actually better than I expected! Do they count overtime hours in that calculation?

Carmen Ortiz
•Yes, all wages including overtime are counted when they calculate your base year earnings.

i got like $380 a week when i was making $16 an hour so you should get more than that. took forever to get my first payment though, like 3 weeks after filing

•Three weeks?? I was hoping to get paid faster than that. Did you have any issues with your claim?

•nah no issues just takes time for them to process everything i guess

The exact formula is complicated but Washington ESD looks at your four highest-earning quarters in your base year period. If you're having trouble getting through to them by phone to ask specific questions about your benefit calculation, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helps you actually reach a live agent. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Made a huge difference when I needed to get clarification on my benefit amount.

•Never heard of that service but honestly anything that helps get through to Washington ESD sounds worth trying. Their phone system is impossible.

•I'll check that out if I run into problems. Right now I'm just trying to understand the basics before I file.

DON'T expect to get paid right away!!! I filed 6 weeks ago and I'm STILL waiting for my first payment. They put my claim in adjudication for no reason and won't tell me what's wrong. The whole system is a joke and they don't care if people can't pay rent.

•Six weeks is really unusual for adjudication. Have you tried calling them about the specific reason for the delay?

•I've called hundreds of times and either get disconnected or told someone will call me back (they never do

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr above - for situations like yours where you really need to speak to someone but can't get through the normal way.

The weekly benefit calculator on Washington ESD's website is pretty accurate if you want to estimate before filing. You just need your wage info from the past 5 quarters. Keep in mind you also have to do job search activities to keep getting paid - 3 job contacts per week minimum.

•Good point about the job search requirement. Is that tracked somewhere or do they just ask about it?

•You log your job search activities in WorkSourceWA and they can audit you anytime to verify you're actually doing it.

my cousin got $750/week but she was making like $25/hour as a manager before getting laid off. really depends on your wages

•That makes sense, higher wages = higher benefits up to the maximum

One thing to remember is that unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can choose to have taxes withheld or pay them later, but don't forget about that when budgeting. Also, if you have any part-time work while collecting, it affects your weekly payment amount.

•I didn't know about the tax thing, thanks for mentioning that. How much do they typically withhold?

Mei Wong
•I think it's 10% federal tax withholding if you choose that option. Washington doesn't have state income tax so that's not a concern.

Just file ASAP because there's a waiting week before you can get paid anyway. The sooner you file the sooner that week starts counting down.

•Wait, there's a waiting week? So even if everything goes smoothly I won't get paid for the first week?
0 coins
Carmen Ortiz
•That's correct - Washington has a one-week unpaid waiting period for all new claims. It's basically like a deductible.

I was making $22/hour and get $612 per week. Took about 2 weeks to get my first payment which wasn't too bad. The hardest part is remembering to file your weekly claim every Sunday - if you miss it you lose that week's payment.

•Good to know about the Sunday deadline. Do they send reminders or is it just on you to remember?

Giovanni Rossi
•They send email reminders if you set that up in your account. I'd definitely recommend doing that.

The benefit amount isn't the only thing to consider - you also get help with job training and career services through WorkSourceWA. Some people don't know about those resources.

•That could be useful since I'm thinking about switching fields anyway. Do you have to use those services or are they optional?

Fatima Al-Mansour
•They're optional unless Washington ESD refers you to specific services. But they're free and can be really helpful for upgrading skills.

whatever you do dont mess up your weekly claims or lie about anything. they audit randomly and if they catch you doing something wrong they make you pay everything back plus penalties

•Yikes, that sounds scary. What kinds of things do people mess up on?

•mostly not reporting work or job search activities correctly. just be honest about everything

I've been on unemployment twice and the benefit amount was pretty much what the online calculator predicted both times. Washington ESD is actually pretty straightforward with the math, it's just getting through to talk to someone that's nearly impossible when you have questions.

•This is why services like Claimyr are becoming popular - people are willing to pay to actually reach someone at Washington ESD when they need help.

•Yeah I can see why. I probably called 200+ times during my second claim when I had an issue and never got through.

One more thing - if you qualify for the maximum benefit of $999/week, you were probably making good money and might want to consider whether unemployment is enough to cover your expenses or if you need to find work faster.

•That's a good point. At my wage level I'm definitely not going to get the maximum, but even getting $500ish per week will help while I search.

File online at secure.esd.wa.gov if you haven't already. Way easier than trying to call in your claim. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months.

•Thanks, I'll gather that info and file this weekend. This thread has been really helpful for understanding what to expect.

just remember unemployment is temporary help while you look for work, not a long term solution. in washington you can collect for up to 26 weeks max

Yuki Tanaka
•Definitely planning to find work as soon as possible. 26 weeks seems like a reasonable safety net though.

The amount varies but for most people it's about 40-50% of what you were making before. Better than nothing but definitely not enough to maintain the same lifestyle.

Yuki Tanaka
•Yeah I'm already planning to cut back on expenses. It's just meant to keep you afloat, not replace your full income.

Good luck with your claim! The whole process can be stressful but once you get into the routine of filing weekly claims it becomes pretty automatic.
