How much does unemployment pay in Washington - need to know my benefit amount

I just got laid off from my warehouse job after 2 years and I'm trying to figure out how much unemployment pay I can expect from Washington ESD. My last job paid $22/hour and I worked full-time. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? I heard it's based on your earnings but I can't find clear info on their website about the actual dollar amounts.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount (WBA) based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. The maximum weekly benefit for 2025 is $999 per week. They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then multiply by 0.0385 to get your weekly amount. So if you made $15,000 in your highest quarter, you'd get about $222 per week.

0 coins

Thanks! That helps a lot. I think my highest quarter was around $11,000 so looks like I'd get around $163 per week if I'm doing the math right.

0 coins

don't forget you can also get the additional $25 per week if you have dependents

0 coins

The formula is a bit more complex than that. Washington ESD uses your base period which is the first four of the last five completed quarters before you filed. They look at all four quarters, not just the highest one, to determine your benefit year total. Then they calculate your weekly amount from that.

0 coins

Yeah this is confusing me too. I've been trying to call Washington ESD for 3 days to get someone to explain my benefit calculation and I keep getting disconnected after waiting for hours.

0 coins

I had the same problem trying to reach someone at Washington ESD about my benefit amount. Found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a real person in like 20 minutes. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Definitely worth it when you need to talk to someone about your specific situation.

0 coins

Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. The Washington ESD phone system is impossible.

0 coins

I think you're all making this too complicated!! I just got approved last month and my benefit amount is exactly half of what I was making per week. I was making $800/week gross and my unemployment is $400/week. Simple as that.

0 coins

That's not how Washington ESD calculates benefits at all. You might have gotten lucky with the math working out that way, but the actual formula is based on your base period earnings, not your most recent weekly pay.

0 coins

Well that's what happened to me so I don't know what to tell you. Maybe they changed the rules?

0 coins

The rules haven't changed. Your situation might just coincidentally worked out that way, but that's not the standard calculation method Washington ESD uses.

0 coins

Be prepared for it to take FOREVER to get your first payment even after you're approved. Washington ESD is so slow with everything. I filed 6 weeks ago and still haven't seen a dime because they keep asking for more documentation.

0 coins

What kind of documentation did they ask for? I want to make sure I have everything ready when I file.

0 coins

They wanted pay stubs from my last employer, then they wanted a separation notice, then they wanted me to verify my identity with more documents. It's like they keep finding new things to ask for every week.

0 coins

For 2025, the minimum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $295 and the maximum is $999. Most people fall somewhere in between based on their earnings history. You can also use the benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website to get an estimate before you file your claim.

0 coins

I tried that calculator and it gave me a range that was like $200 difference between the low and high estimate. Not very helpful when you're trying to budget.

0 coins

The calculator can only give estimates because it doesn't have access to your complete wage history. Washington ESD has to verify your earnings with all your employers before they can give you the exact amount.

0 coins

Don't forget about taxes! Your unemployment benefits are taxable income so you'll owe federal and state taxes on whatever you receive. You can choose to have 10% withheld for federal taxes when you certify each week.

0 coins

Ugh I didn't even think about taxes. So if I get $163/week that's really only like $147 after taxes?

0 coins

Depends on your overall tax situation but yeah, you'll owe something. Better to have it withheld than get hit with a big tax bill next year.

0 coins

I learned this the hard way. Didn't withhold taxes and owed like $1,800 when I filed. Definitely opt for the withholding.

Update: I finally got through to Washington ESD using that Claimyr service someone mentioned. The agent explained that my benefit amount is $289/week and walked me through exactly how they calculated it from my base period earnings. Way easier than trying to figure it out myself.

0 coins

Glad it worked for you! I've used Claimyr a couple times now when I needed to talk to Washington ESD and it's always been way faster than trying to call directly.

0 coins

How much does that service cost though? I'm already broke and can't afford to pay extra just to talk to someone.

0 coins

It's worth it when you consider how much time you save not sitting on hold for hours. Plus you actually get to talk to a real Washington ESD agent, not some third party.

0 coins

I've been on unemployment for 8 months now and let me tell you, whatever amount they tell you, it's not enough to live on. You better start looking for work immediately because the money runs out fast.

0 coins

How long do the benefits last? I heard it was 26 weeks but I'm not sure.

0 coins

It's up to 26 weeks in Washington but they have work search requirements you have to meet every week. Miss those and they'll cut you off.

0 coins

The work search requirement is 3 job contacts per week minimum. You have to log them in WorkSourceWA and keep records in case Washington ESD audits your claim.

0 coins

Just a heads up - if you made really good money at your last job, don't expect unemployment to come close to replacing your income. I was making $75k/year and my unemployment is only like $650/week. Big difference when you have a mortgage and kids.

0 coins

Same here. Went from $4,000/month to $1,800/month on unemployment. Had to make some serious budget cuts.

0 coins

Exactly. People think unemployment is some kind of vacation but you're basically living in poverty compared to your working income.

0 coins

Does anyone know if overtime hours count toward your benefit calculation? I worked a lot of OT in my last job and I'm wondering if that helps or hurts my weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

Yes, overtime counts as regular wages for benefit calculation purposes. Washington ESD looks at your total gross earnings in each quarter, including any overtime pay you received.

0 coins

That's good news then! I probably made an extra $8,000 in overtime last year so that should boost my benefits.

0 coins

I'm confused about the base period thing. My claim says my base period is from January 2024 to December 2024 but I just filed in February 2025. Why are they using old quarters?

0 coins

That's normal. Washington ESD uses completed quarters only, so they can't use the current quarter you're filing in. The base period is always the first four of the last five completed quarters before you file.

0 coins

Oh okay that makes sense. I was worried they had the wrong information or something.

0 coins

Pro tip: if your benefit amount seems too low, you might want to check if Washington ESD has all your wage information. Sometimes employers don't report wages correctly and it can affect your benefit calculation.

0 coins

How do you check that? My benefit amount seems lower than I expected based on what I was making.

0 coins

You can log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look at your wage history. If something looks wrong, you can appeal or ask Washington ESD to contact the employer for correct information.

0 coins

This is another situation where calling Washington ESD directly through Claimyr might be helpful. You can have an agent look at your wage history right away instead of waiting for a callback or appeal process.

0 coins

I thought unemployment was like 60% of your previous income but mine is way less than that. Is there something wrong with my calculation?

0 coins

Washington unemployment isn't a percentage of your previous income. It's calculated using a specific formula based on your base period earnings. The amount you get depends on how much you made in your highest quarter.

0 coins

That's weird. Other states do it as a percentage. Washington's system seems more complicated.

0 coins

Been waiting 3 weeks for my monetary determination and getting anxious about how much I'll receive. Anyone know how long it typically takes Washington ESD to calculate your benefit amount after you file?

0 coins

Mine took about 10 days but I think it depends on whether they need to verify your wages with employers. Some people wait longer if there are issues.

0 coins

Ugh 3 weeks feels like forever when you have bills to pay. Might try calling them to see what's taking so long.

0 coins

Definitely try Claimyr if you want to actually get through to someone at Washington ESD. Regular calling is basically impossible with their phone system.

0 coins

For what it's worth, even though unemployment doesn't pay as much as working, at least it's something while you're job hunting. Better than nothing I guess.

0 coins

True, I'm grateful there's at least some safety net. Just trying to figure out how to make it work with my budget.

0 coins

Yeah it's definitely not luxury living but it helps keep you afloat. Good luck with your claim!
