Washington ESD unemployment pay amounts - how much should I expect?
I just got laid off from my warehouse job after 2 years and I'm trying to figure out how much unemployment I'll get from Washington ESD. I was making about $18/hour working full time. Does anyone know how they calculate the weekly benefit amount? I heard it's based on your highest earning quarter but I'm not sure how that works exactly.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount using your base year earnings. They take your highest earning quarter and divide by 26. So if your highest quarter was $9,000, you'd get around $346 per week. Maximum weekly benefit right now is $999.

•Thanks! How do I find out what my highest quarter was? Is that in my online account somewhere?

•Yes, once you file your initial claim it will show your base year wages and quarterly breakdown in your SecureAccess Washington account.

i think its like half your regular pay or something? mine was way less than i expected tho

•It's not half your regular pay, it's calculated differently. The system looks at your earnings over a specific base year period.

•oh ok that makes more sense why mine was so low then

The calculation can be confusing but here's the breakdown: Washington ESD uses your base year (first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed). They take your highest quarter earnings, divide by 26, then that's your weekly benefit amount. Minimum is $295, maximum is $999 as of 2025.

•That's really helpful! So if I made $12,000 in my best quarter, I'd get about $461 per week?

•Exactly right! And you can collect for up to 26 weeks if you have sufficient wage credits.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to ask about my benefit calculation but can never get through. The phone system is impossible! Anyone know a better way to reach them?

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr. It's a service that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works. Saved me hours of calling!

•Try calling right at 8am when they open, that's usually the best time to get through.

Another question - do they count overtime pay in the calculation? I worked a lot of OT last year.

CaptainAwesome
•Yes, all wages including overtime are counted in your base year earnings. That could actually help boost your weekly benefit amount.

•Good to know! That might put me in a higher bracket then.

Washington ESD benefit amounts are WAY too low compared to cost of living here. $999 max is a joke when rent alone is $2000+ for most people.

•I agree it's not enough but it's temporary assistance, not meant to replace your full income.

•Still doesn't make it any easier to survive on though

•At least Washington is better than some states. I have friends in other places getting way less.

Don't forget you have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits too. They don't automatically withhold federal taxes unless you request it.

Amara Okafor
•Oh I didn't know that! How do I request tax withholding?

Carlos Mendoza
•You can set it up in your online account or call Washington ESD to have them withhold 10% for federal taxes.

Just make sure you meet the eligibility requirements too. You need sufficient wage credits and have to be able and available for work.

•What are wage credits exactly?

Zainab Mahmoud
•Wage credits are based on your earnings during the base year. You need at least $3,850 in your base year and wages in at least two quarters to qualify.

The online benefit calculator on Washington ESD website is pretty accurate if you want to estimate before filing.

•I'll check that out, thanks!

•Yeah that calculator helped me figure out if it was worth filing or not.

Remember you also have to file weekly claims to actually get paid. The initial application just determines your benefit amount.

•How often do you have to file the weekly claims?

Lena Müller
•Every week, usually due by midnight on Saturday. You can file online through your SecureAccess Washington account.

I had issues with my benefit calculation being wrong initially. Took forever to get it corrected because I couldn't reach anyone at Washington ESD by phone.

•That's exactly why I ended up using Claimyr when I had calculation issues. Way easier than spending days trying to get through their phone system.

Also keep in mind that if you have a part-time job while collecting unemployment, they'll reduce your weekly benefit based on how much you earn.

Amara Okafor
•Good to know. What's the threshold for that?
0 coins
Paolo Bianchi
•You can earn up to your weekly benefit amount minus $5 without any reduction. Anything over that gets deducted dollar for dollar.

The waiting week was eliminated during COVID but I think it's back now? Anyone know for sure?

Klaus Schmidt
•No waiting week currently in Washington. You can get paid for your first week if you're eligible.

•That's good news at least!

Make sure to keep track of your job search activities too. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week.

Just filed my claim last week and still waiting to hear back about my benefit amount. How long does it usually take?
0 coins
CaptainAwesome
•Usually takes 2-3 weeks to process if there are no issues. You'll get a monetary determination letter with your benefit amount.

•Thanks, I'll keep watching for it then.

The whole system is so confusing. I wish they made it easier to understand how much you'll get before you even apply.

•That's why the online calculator exists, but I agree the whole process could be more transparent.
