How long does it take to hear back from Washington ESD unemployment appeal?

I submitted my unemployment appeal to Washington ESD about 6 weeks ago after they denied my initial claim. I haven't heard anything back yet and I'm starting to panic. My savings are running out and I don't know if I should expect to wait months or if something went wrong with my paperwork. Has anyone been through the appeal process recently? How long did it take before you got a hearing scheduled or any kind of response?

Appeals can take anywhere from 8-16 weeks right now. I filed mine in October and just got my hearing notice last week. The backlog is pretty bad.

16 weeks?? That's almost 4 months! How are people supposed to survive that long without any income?

0 coins

I know it's rough. I had to move back in with family temporarily. The waiting is the worst part.

You should have gotten an acknowledgment letter within 2-3 weeks of filing your appeal. If you didn't receive anything, your appeal might not have been properly submitted. Check your SecureAccess Washington account to see if there's any record of it.

0 coins

I did get the acknowledgment letter but that was over a month ago. Nothing since then.

0 coins

That's normal then. The acknowledgment just confirms they received it. The actual hearing notice comes much later.

I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to check on my appeal status but can never get through. The phone system is impossible. Found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that actually got me connected to a real person. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth checking out if you need to talk to someone about your case.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. Did they actually help you get information about your appeal?

0 coins

Yeah, I was able to confirm my appeal was in the queue and get an estimated timeline. Way better than hanging up after 2 hours on hold.

0 coins

Interesting. I might try that too since I can't get through either.

0 coins

The whole appeals process is a joke. They deny people for bogus reasons then make you wait months to prove them wrong. Meanwhile you're supposed to just starve I guess?

0 coins

I understand the frustration, but the appeals process exists for a reason. Sometimes initial denials are overturned when all the facts are presented.

0 coins

Sure but why does it have to take 4 months? Other states handle this way faster.

0 coins

What was your denial reason? Some types of appeals move faster than others. Identity verification appeals usually get resolved quicker than job separation disputes.

0 coins

They said I quit voluntarily but I was actually laid off. My employer apparently told them something different.

0 coins

Oh that's a separation issue appeal. Those definitely take longer because they need to investigate both sides. Make sure you have documentation of your layoff.

0 coins

I have the layoff notice from HR. Hopefully that's enough proof.

0 coins

My appeal took exactly 12 weeks from filing to hearing. The actual hearing was pretty quick though, maybe 30 minutes over the phone. Won my case and got all my back pay within 2 weeks after that.

0 coins

That gives me hope! Did you have to provide a lot of documentation during the hearing?

0 coins

Just what I had already submitted with my appeal. The judge already had everything and asked specific questions about the situation.

0 coins

I'm in week 10 of waiting for my hearing. Starting to wonder if they lost my paperwork or something. This whole system is broken.

0 coins

Have you tried calling to check on the status? I know it's hard to get through but sometimes they can give you updates.

0 coins

I've tried dozens of times. Either busy signal or get disconnected after waiting for hours.

0 coins

Pro tip: if you filed your appeal by mail, make sure you sent it certified mail. I've heard horror stories of appeals getting 'lost' and people having to refile.

0 coins

I filed mine online through SecureAccess Washington. That should be more reliable than mail right?

0 coins

Yeah online is definitely better. You should have gotten a confirmation number and everything.

0 coins

The wait times vary a lot depending on your region too. Seattle area appeals seem to take longer than smaller counties from what I've heard.

0 coins

That makes sense. Probably way more volume in King County.

0 coins

Exactly. Rural areas might get scheduled faster just because there are fewer cases.

0 coins

While you're waiting for your appeal, make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even though you're not getting paid. If you win your appeal, you'll get back pay for all those weeks.

0 coins

Really? I stopped filing because I thought there was no point since I was denied.

0 coins

No, you definitely need to keep filing! Otherwise you won't be eligible for those weeks even if you win. It's called maintaining your claim.

0 coins

Oh no, I haven't filed in like 3 weeks. Can I still go back and file those?

0 coins

You might be able to but you'll need to explain the gap. Call them ASAP or use that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier.

0 coins

Just want to add that even though the wait is frustrating, most people who have legitimate appeals do win their cases. Hang in there and make sure you have all your documentation ready.

0 coins

Thanks, that's reassuring. I'm pretty confident I have a good case, it's just the waiting that's killing me.

0 coins

The back pay when you win makes the wait somewhat worth it. I got almost $8,000 when my appeal went through.

0 coins

If you're really struggling financially while waiting, look into food banks and local assistance programs. Some counties have emergency rent assistance too.

0 coins

Good idea. I've been too proud to ask for help but I might not have a choice soon.

0 coins

Nothing wrong with using available resources. That's what they're there for.

0 coins

My hearing is scheduled for next week after waiting 14 weeks. They sent the notice with only 10 days advance warning, so make sure to check your mail regularly.

0 coins

Good luck with your hearing! Let us know how it goes.

0 coins

Will do. Nervous but ready to finally get this resolved.

0 coins

I used Claimyr last month to get through to Washington ESD about my appeal timeline. The rep told me they're currently scheduling hearings that were filed in September, so if you filed in November like me, we're probably looking at February or March.

0 coins

That's actually helpful to know. At least gives us a realistic timeframe instead of just guessing.

0 coins

Yeah exactly. Worth the cost just to get real information instead of wondering.

0 coins

For what it's worth, the appeals judges I've dealt with have been pretty fair. They actually listen to your side of the story, unlike the initial determination process.

0 coins

That's good to hear. I felt like my initial claim was just automatically denied without any real review.

0 coins

The initial process is pretty automated. The appeals are where they actually look at the details.

0 coins

Make sure you're prepared for your hearing when it comes. Have your timeline of events written out, any documents organized, and be ready to explain your side clearly and concisely.

0 coins

Good advice. I'll start putting together a timeline now while everything is still fresh in my memory.

0 coins

Also practice explaining your situation out loud. It helps when you're nervous during the actual hearing.

0 coins

The waiting is definitely the hardest part. I'm at week 11 and starting to lose hope. Bills keep coming but no income to pay them.

0 coins

Hang in there. I know it's brutal but you'll get through this. Consider reaching out to creditors to explain your situation - many will work with you.

0 coins

Haven't thought of that. Maybe they'd be understanding about late payments if I explain.

0 coins

One more tip - when you do get your hearing notice, read it carefully. They'll tell you exactly what documents to bring and what the specific issues are that they'll be addressing.

0 coins

Thanks for all the advice everyone. This thread has been more helpful than anything I could find on the Washington ESD website.

0 coins

That's what we're here for. Keep us updated on how it goes!

0 coins

Just got word that my appeal hearing resulted in a favorable decision! Filed in August, hearing in December, decision this week. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

0 coins

Congratulations! That gives me hope. How long before you actually got your back pay?

0 coins

They said 1-2 weeks for the back pay to process. Much faster than the original wait!
