How long for Washington ESD unemployment appeal decision - been waiting 6 weeks
I filed an appeal with Washington ESD after they disqualified my unemployment claim for allegedly quitting without good cause (which isn't true - I was basically forced out due to unsafe working conditions). The appeal was submitted 6 weeks ago and I still haven't heard anything back. My account just shows 'appeal pending' with no other information. I'm getting desperate here as I've been without any income this whole time. Does anyone know how long these appeal decisions typically take? I tried calling but can never get through to anyone who can give me a real answer.

Appeal hearings in Washington usually take 8-12 weeks from the time you file, sometimes longer if they're backed up. The good news is if you win your appeal, they'll pay you retroactively for all the weeks you missed. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even though you're not getting paid right now.

•I've been filing weekly claims but it feels pointless when everything just shows $0. Thanks for the timeline info though, at least I know I'm not the only one waiting this long.

•Yeah definitely keep filing those weekly claims! I made that mistake during my appeal and had to fight to get those weeks added back later.

6 weeks isn't that unusual unfortunately. Mine took 10 weeks and I was pulling my hair out by the end. The worst part is you can't get any updates on where you are in the queue. They just tell you to wait.

•That's exactly what's driving me crazy - no communication at all about timing or status. Did you end up winning your appeal?

•Yes I won, but it was a stressful few months. Started looking into services that help you actually reach ESD agents by phone. Found one called Claimyr that got me through to someone who could at least confirm my appeal was in the system and moving forward.

•Never heard of that service before. How does it work exactly?

The appeal process has definitely gotten slower since COVID. Before 2020, most appeals were resolved in 4-6 weeks. Now it's more like 8-16 weeks depending on complexity. For a quit vs discharge issue like yours, they'll need to review all the documentation from both sides.

•16 weeks?! That's almost 4 months without income. How is anyone supposed to survive that long?

•That's why it's so important to file the appeal immediately and keep documenting everything. The retroactive payment helps but doesn't pay the bills in real time.

I'm in week 8 of waiting for my appeal decision and starting to panic about rent money. Has anyone had luck getting any kind of status update before the actual decision comes out?

•That's actually where Claimyr helped me - they got me through to an actual ESD representative who could see my case details. Normally I'd spend hours trying to call and just get hung up on. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Thanks for the tip! Anything beats sitting here wondering if my case got lost in the system somewhere.

The appeal timeline depends a lot on what type of disqualification you're appealing. Quit vs discharge cases can take longer because they often require more investigation. Overpayment appeals are usually faster.

•Mine is definitely quit vs discharge. They're saying I quit but really I was forced out due to safety issues that management ignored.

•Document everything about those safety issues if you haven't already. Photos, emails, witness statements, anything that shows you had good cause to leave.

Just want to say hang in there - I know how stressful the waiting is. My appeal took 12 weeks but I got a favorable decision and received over $4,000 in back payments. It was worth the wait even though it was hell at the time.

•That gives me hope! $4,000 would make such a huge difference right now. Did you have to do a phone hearing or was it decided on documents alone?

•I had a phone hearing that lasted about 45 minutes. The judge asked detailed questions about why I left my job. Having documentation really helped my case.

Pro tip: start preparing for your hearing now even though you haven't been scheduled yet. Organize all your documents, write out a timeline of events, and practice explaining your situation clearly and concisely.

•Good advice. I have some documentation but probably need to gather more. The safety violations were pretty well documented at least.

•Safety violations are strong evidence for good cause. Make sure you have dates and specific incidents documented.

•Also keep records of any attempts you made to resolve the safety issues before leaving - that shows you tried to fix the situation first.

I waited 14 weeks for my appeal decision last year. It's brutal but the system is just overwhelmed. At least when you do get the decision, if it's favorable, the back pay comes pretty quickly - usually within a week or two.

•14 weeks is insane. How did you manage financially during that time?

•Honestly it was really tough. Had to rely on family help and food banks. The back pay was substantial though - over $5,200 when it finally came through.

The waiting is the worst part because there's literally nothing you can do to speed it up. I tried calling constantly during my appeal and never got any useful information until I used a service that actually gets you through to real people at ESD.

•What service was that? I'm tired of getting hung up on every time I call.

•Claimyr - they handle the calling for you and get you connected to actual ESD staff. Was able to get confirmation that my appeal was progressing and get an estimate of timing. Way better than the endless busy signals and disconnections.

Just got my appeal decision after 11 weeks - won my case! The retroactive payment was over $6,000 which was life-changing after going without income for so long. Don't give up hope!

•Congratulations! That's amazing news and gives me hope for my own case. What was the key factor that won your appeal?

•Having detailed documentation of the workplace issues that led me to quit. I had emails, photos, and witness statements that proved I had good cause to leave.

For what it's worth, 6 weeks isn't that long in appeal time. I've seen cases take 20+ weeks during busy periods. The system is just chronically understaffed.

Amara Nwosu
•20+ weeks?! That's almost half a year without income. How is that even legal?

•It's not ideal but that's the reality of the current system. The good news is the back pay includes interest in some cases.

I'm a former ESD employee and can tell you that appeal volumes are at record highs while staffing hasn't increased proportionally. 8-16 weeks is the realistic timeframe right now for most cases.

•Thanks for the insider perspective. Is there anything claimants can do to avoid delays or get priority processing?

PixelPioneer
•Not really - appeals are processed in order received. The best thing you can do is make sure all your documentation is complete and clear when you file.

The uncertainty is almost worse than the financial stress. I'm in week 9 of waiting and check my account obsessively hoping to see an update.

One thing that helped me during my 13-week appeal wait was connecting with local food banks and assistance programs. Don't be too proud to ask for help - that's what these programs are for.

•Thanks for the suggestion. I've been hesitant but might need to look into that soon if this drags on much longer.

•I totally understand the hesitation, but these programs exist for exactly situations like this. Most people working there understand the unemployment system delays.

Just remember that if you win your appeal, you'll get paid for every week you've been waiting. I got almost $8,000 in back pay after a 15-week wait. It was a huge relief when it finally hit my account.

•$8,000 would solve so many problems right now. Trying to stay optimistic that my appeal will be successful too.

The appeal system definitely needs reform but in the meantime we just have to work within it. Keep filing weekly claims and stay organized with your documentation.

•Agreed that the system needs fixing. For now I'll just keep doing what I can and hope for the best.

•That's all any of us can do. The system isn't perfect but it does eventually work for most people who have valid cases.

Update on the Claimyr service mentioned earlier - I actually tried it last week and was impressed. Got connected to an ESD representative within 30 minutes instead of spending hours getting busy signals. They were able to confirm my appeal status and give me a rough timeline estimate.

•Yeah, for me it was worth it just for the peace of mind of knowing my case wasn't lost in the system somewhere.
