How long does appeal take for unemployment Washington ESD - timeline?

My unemployment claim got denied last month and I immediately filed an appeal with Washington ESD. It's been 6 weeks now and I haven't heard anything back. I'm really stressed about this because I need to know if I should keep looking for work or if there's a chance my benefits will get approved. Does anyone know how long the appeal process typically takes? I tried calling but can never get through to anyone at Washington ESD.

The appeal process can take anywhere from 6-12 weeks depending on how backed up they are. First you'll get a hearing scheduled, then you have to wait for the Administrative Law Judge's decision. I went through this last year and it took about 10 weeks total.

10 weeks?! That's so long. Did you get backpay for all the weeks you were waiting?

0 coins

Yes, if your appeal is successful you'll get backpay for all the weeks from when you first filed. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while the appeal is pending.

I'm in the same boat - filed my appeal 8 weeks ago and still waiting. This is ridiculous how long everything takes with Washington ESD.

It's so frustrating! I don't understand why they can't at least give us a timeline or update.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD, you might want to try Claimyr. It's a service that helps you get connected to an actual agent without waiting on hold for hours. I used it when I had issues with my claim and it worked great - you can check it out at claimyr.com and they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

Never heard of that before. Is it legit? I'm desperate at this point.

0 coins

Yeah it's totally legitimate. They just help you get through the phone system faster. Way better than spending hours trying to call on your own.

0 coins

The whole system is broken. I've been waiting 3 months for my appeal hearing and they keep postponing it. Meanwhile I can't pay my rent.

0 coins

That's awful! Have you tried contacting your state representative? Sometimes they can help push things along.

0 coins

I hadn't thought of that. I'll look into it, thanks for the suggestion.

One thing to keep in mind - make sure you're continuing to file your weekly claims even during the appeal process. A lot of people don't realize you have to keep doing that or you'll lose out on benefits if you win.

0 coins

Wait really? I stopped filing because I thought there was no point since I was denied.

0 coins

Oh no! You need to start filing again immediately. You can file for all the weeks you missed. This is super important for getting your backpay if you win the appeal.

0 coins

Thank you so much for telling me this! I had no idea. I'll file for all the weeks I missed right now.

0 coins

My appeal took 14 weeks total. Got my hearing, presented my case, and won. The judge was actually pretty fair and listened to my side of the story. Don't give up hope!

0 coins

That gives me some hope. What kind of documentation did you bring to the hearing?

0 coins

I brought all my pay stubs, termination paperwork, and any emails related to why I was let go. Also wrote down a timeline of events beforehand so I wouldn't forget anything important.

0 coins

ugh the waiting is the worst part. I keep checking my account every day hoping for some update but nothing changes

0 coins

Same here! I refresh that page like 10 times a day hoping something will change.

For what it's worth, I was able to get through to Washington ESD using Claimyr and they actually gave me a better estimate of when my appeal would be heard. Much better than just waiting in the dark.

0 coins

How much does that service cost? I'm already broke from not having benefits.

0 coins

It's really affordable compared to the stress of not knowing what's happening with your claim. Worth checking out their website for details.

0 coins

The appeal process is designed to wear you down and make you give up. They're counting on people just walking away from their rightful benefits.

0 coins

I've definitely thought about giving up multiple times. It's exhausting.

0 coins

Don't give up! If you have a valid case, it's worth fighting for. The backpay can be substantial if you win.

0 coins

My cousin went through this last year and it took 4 months total. But she got like $8000 in backpay when she won so it was worth the wait.

0 coins

Wow that's a lot of backpay! That would definitely help catch up on bills.

0 coins

Just wanted to add - if you get a hearing scheduled, make sure you show up! Even if it's by phone. A lot of people miss their hearings and automatically lose their appeals.

0 coins

Good point. I'll make sure to mark my calendar as soon as I get a hearing date.

0 coins

Yes! And if you can't make the scheduled time, you can usually reschedule if you call ahead.

0 coins

Been there. The uncertainty is the hardest part. Just try to stay positive and keep pushing forward.

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement. Some days are definitely harder than others.

I work at a legal aid clinic and we help people with unemployment appeals. The timeline really varies but most cases get resolved within 8-16 weeks. The key is being persistent and not giving up.

0 coins

That's really helpful to know. Do you have any other tips for the appeal process?

0 coins

Document everything, be prepared for your hearing, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. The system can be confusing but it's definitely navigable.

0 coins

Still waiting on my appeal from 3 months ago. Starting to think I'll never hear back from them.

0 coins

That's exactly why I used Claimyr - I needed to talk to someone who could actually tell me what was happening with my case instead of just wondering.

0 coins

Maybe I should look into that. This waiting around is driving me crazy.

0 coins

The whole appeals process needs to be reformed. It shouldn't take months to get a simple hearing scheduled.

0 coins

Agreed. There has to be a better way to handle these cases.

0 coins

One more tip - if you haven't already, make sure you have all your documentation organized and ready. The hearing can happen pretty quickly once it's scheduled, so you want to be prepared.

0 coins

Good advice. I'll start getting all my paperwork together this weekend.

0 coins

My appeal took 11 weeks but I won and got full backpay. The judge was very thorough and fair. Don't lose hope!

0 coins

That's encouraging to hear. I'm trying to stay optimistic but it's hard when you're waiting so long.

0 coins

check your mail regularly too - sometimes the hearing notices get lost or delayed in the mail

0 coins

Good point. I'll make sure to check every day.

0 coins

The waiting game is brutal but hang in there. Most people who have valid appeals do end up winning if they stick with it.

0 coins

Thanks for the reassurance. I really needed to hear that today.

0 coins

Update for anyone still following this thread - I finally got my hearing date! It's scheduled for next month. Used Claimyr again to confirm all the details with Washington ESD and make sure I'm fully prepared. Feeling much more confident now that I have a concrete date.

0 coins

That's great news! I'm still waiting for mine but your update gives me hope that it's coming soon.

0 coins

Hang in there! The wait is tough but once you get that hearing scheduled, things move pretty quickly.
