How long do you have to work before you qualify for unemployment in Washington?

I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington state. I've been working part-time at a retail job for about 8 months now, averaging 25 hours a week. Before that I had a brief stint at a restaurant for like 2 months but got laid off. I'm worried I haven't worked long enough to qualify if I lose my current job. Does anyone know what the minimum work requirements are for Washington ESD unemployment? I've heard different things from coworkers and I'm getting confused about the rules.

In Washington, you need to have worked in at least two quarters during your base period and earned a minimum amount. The base period is typically the first four of the last five completed quarters before you file. You need to earn at least $5,000 total in your base period and have earnings in two different quarters. With 8 months of work, you should be fine as long as you've earned enough.

Thanks! What counts as a quarter though? Is that just 3 month periods?

0 coins

Yes, quarters are Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, and Oct-Dec. Washington ESD looks at your wages reported by employers during those periods.

0 coins

you also need to earn at least $1,005 in your highest earning quarter during the base period. so its not just about time worked but how much you made too

0 coins

Oh wow I didn't know about the $1,005 requirement. I think I should be okay since I've been making around $1,200 a month.

The work history requirements can be confusing but if you've been consistently working part-time for 8 months you're probably good. I had similar hours when I qualified last year. The key thing is that Washington ESD needs to see steady earnings across multiple quarters, not just total time worked. Your restaurant job might actually help since it shows earnings in an earlier quarter.

That's reassuring! I was worried the restaurant job was too short to matter.

Actually if you're having trouble figuring out if you qualify, there's this service called Claimyr that helps people get through to Washington ESD agents faster. I used it when I had questions about my base period earnings. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works.

Wait, I thought you needed to work full time for a whole year before you could get unemployment? That's what my manager told me when I asked about it.

0 coins

No, that's not correct. Part-time work counts toward your qualification as long as you meet the wage requirements. Your manager might be thinking of other benefit programs.

0 coins

Oh man, I've been stressing about this for months thinking I needed a full-time job first!

The Washington ESD website has a benefit calculator where you can check if you qualify. You'll need your wage information from all employers during your base period. It's under the 'File a Claim' section on their site. Much easier than trying to calculate it yourself.

0 coins

Perfect, I'll check that out. Do I need pay stubs or will they have my wage info already?

0 coins

Washington ESD should have your wage records from employers who properly reported your earnings. But it's good to have your pay stubs as backup in case there are any discrepancies.

I qualified with just 6 months of work but I was full-time making decent money. The dollar amounts matter more than the time worked honestly.

0 coins

exactly! i had a friend who worked for like a year but only made minimum wage part time and barely qualified

0 coins

This is really helpful everyone. One more question - if I do qualify, how much would I get per week? Is there a formula for that too?

0 coins

Your weekly benefit amount is based on your earnings in your highest quarter. It's roughly 3.85% of those earnings, with a maximum of $929 per week in 2025. So if you made $6,000 in your best quarter, you'd get around $231 per week.

0 coins

Thanks! That actually sounds pretty reasonable for my situation.

0 coins

Don't forget you also have to be able and available for work and actively looking for a job to keep getting benefits. It's not just about qualifying initially.

0 coins

Yeah I figured there would be ongoing requirements. Do they make you prove you're job searching?

0 coins

You have to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. Washington ESD can audit you and ask for proof anytime.

THE SYSTEM IS SO COMPLICATED FOR NO REASON!! Why can't they just say 'worked 6 months, you qualify' instead of all this quarters and wage calculation nonsense?? Makes it impossible for regular people to understand their rights.

0 coins

I get the frustration but the wage requirements make sense. Someone working 5 hours a week shouldn't get the same benefits as someone working 30 hours a week.

0 coins

I guess but they could still make it clearer! Half the people I know don't even know they might qualify.

When I was figuring out my eligibility last year, I couldn't get through to Washington ESD on the phone to ask questions. Kept getting busy signals or hung up on. Finally found Claimyr which got me connected to an actual agent in like 10 minutes. Way better than spending hours trying to call myself.

0 coins

How much does that cost? Sounds too good to be true.

0 coins

It's worth it when you need answers fast. Check their site claimyr.com for details. They have a demo video that shows exactly how it works.

Just want to add that if you don't qualify under the regular base period, there's something called the alternate base period that uses more recent quarters. So even if your math doesn't work out with the standard calculation, you might still have options.

0 coins

Good to know! This whole thing seems way more flexible than I thought.

0 coins

make sure when you file that you report ALL your employers from the last 18 months. even short term jobs matter for the calculation

0 coins

Will do! I still have all my W-2s from last year so I should be covered.

0 coins

I was in almost the exact same situation last year - part time retail job, worried I hadn't worked long enough. Turned out I qualified just fine and got benefits for 4 months while I looked for something better. The process was actually smoother than I expected once I got past the initial application.

0 coins

That's encouraging! Did you have any issues with the weekly claims or job search requirements?

0 coins

The weekly claims are pretty straightforward, just report any work and wages. Job search was the bigger hassle - had to document everything carefully.

0 coins

One thing to watch out for - if you quit your job you might not qualify even if you meet the work requirements. You generally need to be laid off or lose your job through no fault of your own.

0 coins

Right, I'm not planning to quit. Just want to know my options in case something happens.

0 coins

The restaurant job you mentioned could actually be really helpful. If that was in a different quarter than your current job, it shows you have earnings spread across multiple quarters which is exactly what Washington ESD wants to see.

0 coins

Yeah it was early last year so definitely a different quarter. Glad I didn't dismiss it as irrelevant!

0 coins

For what it's worth, I think you're overthinking this. 8 months of steady part-time work at retail wages should easily meet the requirements. The system is designed to help people who've been working and paying into it.

0 coins

You're probably right. I tend to worry about these things more than I should.

0 coins

If you do end up needing to file a claim and have trouble reaching Washington ESD, I second the Claimyr recommendation. Used it myself when my claim got stuck in adjudication and needed to talk to someone. Much better than the phone tree nightmare.

0 coins

Good to know there are options if I run into problems. Hopefully won't need any of this but better to be prepared.

0 coins

Just remember that even if you qualify, you still need to file your weekly claims on time and follow all the rules. Missing deadlines can mess up your benefits even if you're totally eligible.

0 coins

Noted! Sounds like the key is staying on top of everything once you're in the system.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the help! This thread has been super informative. I feel much more confident about understanding the requirements now. Hopefully I won't need to use this info but it's good to know I have options if something happens with my job.

0 coins

Glad we could help! Just remember to keep good records of your earnings and employment history.

0 coins

good luck! sounds like you should be fine if you ever need to file
