How long does an employee have to work to get unemployment in Washington?

I'm trying to figure out if I qualify for unemployment benefits in Washington state. I've been working at my current job for about 8 months but before that I had a few part-time jobs. Does anyone know the minimum work requirements to be eligible for Washington ESD unemployment? I'm worried I haven't worked long enough to qualify.

In Washington, you need to have earned wages in at least two quarters of your base period to qualify for unemployment benefits. Your base period is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file your claim.

Thanks! What's considered enough wages though? Is there a minimum dollar amount?

Luca Russo

•

Yes, you need to have earned at least $1,650 in your highest quarter and total wages of at least 1.25 times your high quarter wages during your entire base period.

i think its like 680 hours or something like that but not sure

Mateo Sanchez

•

That's not quite right. Washington ESD goes by wages earned, not hours worked. The hours requirement is for job search activities after you start receiving benefits.

oh ok my bad, got confused with the weekly job search stuff

I had trouble figuring this out too when I first applied. Washington ESD's website has a benefits calculator that can help you determine if you qualify based on your work history. You'll need your wage information from all employers during your base period.

That sounds helpful! Do you remember where on their site the calculator is?

It should be on the main Washington ESD website under the unemployment benefits section. You can also call them directly but good luck getting through - I was on hold for hours.

Actually, if you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an agent much faster. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's even a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

ugh the Washington ESD system is so confusing! why cant they just say you need to work X months like normal people understand

Mateo Sanchez

•

I get the frustration, but they use quarters because people's income can vary so much. Someone might work full-time for 3 months and earn more than someone working part-time for 6 months.

i guess that makes sense but still annoying when youre trying to figure out if you qualify

Just to clarify the exact requirements for 2025: You need wages in at least 2 quarters of your base period, minimum $1,650 in your highest quarter, and total base period wages of at least 1.25 times your high quarter amount. So if you earned $2,000 in your best quarter, you'd need at least $2,500 total.

This is really helpful, thank you! I think I might actually qualify then. My highest quarter was around $3,200 and I've probably earned close to $4,500 total.

Make sure you have all your wage records before you apply. Washington ESD will verify everything anyway but it speeds up the process.

Wait, what if you worked for employers who didn't report your wages correctly? I think one of my old jobs might have messed up my W-2.

0 coins

Mateo Sanchez

•

If there are wage discrepancies, you can provide your own wage records like pay stubs or W-2s to Washington ESD. They'll investigate and correct the records if needed.

Carmen Vega

•

Good to know, thanks! I was worried I'd be stuck if their records were wrong.

One thing to keep in mind is that the work has to be covered employment. Most regular jobs are covered but some types of work like independent contractor work might not count toward your eligibility.

NebulaNinja

•

All my jobs have been regular W-2 employment so I think I'm good on that front.

0 coins

Zoe Stavros

•

Yeah, if you got W-2s then you should be fine. It's the 1099 contractor work that usually doesn't count.

I remember being really stressed about this when I got laid off last year. Turns out I qualified even though I'd only been at my job for 6 months because I had worked other jobs during my base period. Don't stress too much if you've been working steadily.

That's reassuring! I've been working pretty consistently for the past year and a half, just at different places.

That's exactly the kind of situation where the quarters system works in your favor. Multiple jobs can add up to meet the requirements.

pro tip: if youre close to qualifying but not quite there, you might want to wait a few weeks if a new quarter is starting soon. sometimes that extra quarter of wages can put you over the threshold

0 coins

Mateo Sanchez

•

Good point! Though keep in mind that if you're unemployed, you generally want to file as soon as possible since benefits don't backdate to when you became unemployed, only to when you filed.

Mei Wong

•

true, its a balancing act. better to file and find out than wait too long

Does anyone know if there are different requirements for seasonal workers? I work in tourism and my income is really uneven throughout the year.

0 coins

Luca Russo

•

The basic wage requirements are the same for seasonal workers, but there might be some special considerations. You should definitely talk to Washington ESD about your specific situation.

Amara Okafor

I do seasonal work too and qualified for benefits during my off-season. As long as you meet the wage requirements it should work out.

This whole thread has been super helpful! I was worried I hadn't worked long enough but it sounds like I probably qualify. Going to gather my wage records and apply this week.

Same here! Thanks everyone for the helpful info.

Good luck with your applications! The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits if you qualify.

Just wanted to add that if you're denied initially, don't give up. Sometimes Washington ESD makes mistakes or doesn't have all your wage information. You can appeal the decision.

0 coins

Dylan Campbell

•

Absolutely! I got denied at first because they were missing wages from one of my employers. After I provided the missing information, my claim was approved.

NebulaNinja

•

Good to know there's an appeals process if something goes wrong.

Another thing - make sure you understand the difference between your base period and alternate base period. If you don't qualify under the regular base period, Washington ESD will automatically check your alternate base period.

0 coins

Dmitry Sokolov

•

What's the difference between those two base periods?

0 coins

Sofia Torres

•

The regular base period is the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters. The alternate base period is the last 4 completed quarters. So it includes more recent work.

I tried calling Washington ESD to ask about this exact question last month and could never get through. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and got connected to an agent within 20 minutes. Really saved me a lot of frustration.

Miguel Ramos

•

Was it worth it? I've been trying to call for weeks about my claim status.

0 coins

Ava Martinez

•

Definitely worth it for me. The agent was able to review my wage history and confirm I qualified before I even submitted my application.

QuantumQuasar

•

One more tip: keep detailed records of all your employment and wages. Even if you think you qualify, Washington ESD might ask for additional documentation during the claims process.

NebulaNinja

•

Great advice! I'll make sure to keep everything organized before I apply.

Zainab Omar

•

Yeah, having your ducks in a row from the start can prevent delays later on.

For anyone still confused about the math, here's a simple way to think about it: you need to have earned enough wages in at least 2 quarters during your base period, with your highest quarter being at least $1,650 and your total wages being at least 25% more than your highest quarter.

0 coins

Yara Sayegh

•

Thanks for breaking it down simply! The 25% more part is what I was missing.

0 coins

NebulaNinja

•

This helps a lot. I think I definitely meet these requirements based on my work history.

0 coins

Keisha Johnson

•

remember that you also have to be able and available for work and actively seeking employment to keep receiving benefits. the work requirements are just for initial eligibility

0 coins

Paolo Longo

•

Right, and you have to do at least 3 job search activities per week and log them in WorkSourceWA.

0 coins

NebulaNinja

•

Good point about the ongoing requirements. I'll make sure I understand all of that before I apply.

0 coins

CosmicCowboy

•

I wish Washington ESD made this information clearer on their website. It shouldn't take a forum discussion to understand basic eligibility requirements.

0 coins

Amina Diallo

•

Agreed! Though this thread has been really helpful for understanding the details.

0 coins

Oliver Schulz

•

At least there are resources like this forum and services like Claimyr to help people navigate the system when the official resources aren't clear enough.

0 coins

Natasha Orlova

•

Final thoughts: if you think you might qualify, just apply. The worst they can say is no, and then you'll know for sure. Washington ESD will review your wage history and make the determination.

0 coins

NebulaNinja

•

You're right. I've been overthinking this. I'm going to apply this week and see what happens.

That's the spirit! Better to try and know than to wonder forever.
