How long after paying ESD overpayment until weekly benefits resume?
Just finally managed to pay off a $2,800 overpayment from ESD after they determined I underreported some freelance income last winter. I've continued filing my weekly claims during this whole mess (going on 7 weeks now), but haven't received any benefits since the overpayment notice. My eServices account shows my claim is active and weekly claims are 'pending' status. It's been 5 days since I made the payment - how long should I expect to wait before my benefits start flowing again? My landlord is getting impatient and I'm down to eating ramen for every meal. Anyone dealt with this before?

In my experience, it can take 2-3 weeks for ESD to process your payment and release your pending benefits. Their systems don't automatically update when you make a payment - some poor soul has to manually review your account and flip the switch to release funds. I was in the same boat back in January (had a $1,900 overpayment) and it took exactly 18 days from payment to getting my benefits again. Keep filing those weekly claims though!

•18 days?! Seriously? I can't wait that long... do you know if there's any way to speed up the process?

•Same. I waited 3+ weeks after paying my overpayment. No explanation, no timeline, just suddenly money appeared one day. ESD is the worst.

The official processing time is 7-10 business days after they receive your payment, but in reality it often takes 2-3 weeks. I would recommend calling ESD directly to confirm they've received your payment and ask them to expedite processing if you're experiencing financial hardship. They may be able to prioritize your case. Make sure you continue filing your weekly claims on time, even though payments are suspended. Also, document your payment with screenshots or confirmation numbers in case you need to prove you paid the overpayment. If you wait 15 business days and still don't see your benefits resume, you should definitely contact them again. The main ESD number is nearly impossible to reach, but there's a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that can help you get through to an agent without waiting on hold for hours. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Hope this helps!

•Thank you for the detailed response! I've been trying to call ESD every day this week with no luck - just endless busy signals or getting disconnected. I'll check out that Claimyr service - at this point I'd try anything to get through to a real person.

When I had this situation in 2024, it took exactly 12 calendar days from when my payment posted until my benefits resumed. However, I had to make multiple calls to verify they received my payment. Here's what worked for me: 1. Call first thing in the morning (7:30am) when the lines open 2. Select the option for overpayment questions specifically 3. Ask them to notate in your file that payment has been received 4. Request they escalate to a supervisor for review The system doesn't automatically recognize payments sometimes, especially if you paid through their online portal instead of mailing a check. The key is getting someone to manually update your file.

IT DEPENDS!!! I had 2 overpayments (not my fault, THEIR mistake both times!!!) and the first time it took 3 days after I paid and the second time it took 25 DAYS!!! When I asked why so different they said "it depends on staff workload" which is RIDICULOUS when people are starving and can't pay bills!! The second time I had to borrow money from my sister to avoid eviction while waiting for them to "process" a payment they already received!!! THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!

•Ugh, that's what I'm afraid of. I literally can't wait 25 days - I'll be evicted by then. Did you find any way to speed up the process the second time?

Try calling your state representative's office! I was stuck in limbo for weeks after paying my overpayment, and nothing was happening. I finally called my state rep's office and explained the situation. They have special contacts at ESD and can often get things resolved quickly. My benefits started again 3 days after they intervened.

•That's a great idea I hadn't thought of! Do you just look up who your representative is and call their office? Did you have to provide any special documentation?

•Yep! Just Google "[your area] state representative" and call their office. I just explained my situation, gave them my claim ID number, and told them when I paid the overpayment. They took care of the rest. They deal with ESD issues all the time.

dont they have a phone number specifically for overpayments? might be easier to get through on that line than the main number

•Yes, the ESD Collections Office has a separate number: (360) 486-5817. They handle overpayment questions specifically and might have shorter wait times than the main UI claims line. Good suggestion!

i honestly gave up on ever getting through to esd and just went to my local worksource office in person. took about an hour waiting but they were able to check on my claim status and confirm they received my payment. didn't speed anything up but at least i knew they had the money and it was being processed. my benefits started again about 2 weeks after payment.

•THIS!!!! WorkSource offices can sometimes see things in the system even if they can't fix them directly. At least you get ANSWERS instead of being IGNORED!!!
