How do you receive unemployment benefits in Washington state?

I just got laid off from my job at a restaurant and I'm completely lost on how to actually get unemployment benefits. I know Washington ESD handles it but I have no idea where to start or what the process looks like. Do I apply online? What documents do I need? How long does it take to start getting payments? Any help would be appreciated because I'm pretty stressed about paying rent next month.

First step is filing your initial claim on the Washington ESD website. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the last 18 months, and reason for separation. The process is mostly online now through SecureAccess Washington (SAW). After you file, you'll need to file weekly claims to continue receiving benefits.

Thanks! Do I need to wait until my last day of work or can I file right away?

0 coins

You can file the Sunday after your last day of work. Don't wait too long though - there's a waiting week before benefits start.

0 coins

the whole process is pretty straightforward once you get started. just make sure you have all your employer info ready - company names, addresses, dates of employment, and why you left each job. restaurant work can be tricky if you had multiple employers

0 coins

I worked at two different places in the last year, so I'll need info for both?

0 coins

yep, all employers from the last 18 months. washington esd uses that to calculate your benefit amount

0 coins

After you file your initial claim, Washington ESD will send you information about your weekly benefit amount and instructions for filing weekly claims. You have to file every week to keep getting paid, even weeks when you don't receive money. The job search requirement is 3 job contacts per week, so keep track of where you apply.

0 coins

What counts as a job contact? Just applying online or do I need to do more?

0 coins

Online applications count, but you can also include networking contacts, job fairs, or contacting employers directly. Keep detailed records in your job search log.

0 coins

Make sure you're using WorkSourceWA too - they have job search tools and some of your contacts can come from there.

One thing to watch out for - if there's any issue with your claim, it might go into adjudication which can delay payments for weeks. Common issues are things like quit vs layoff disputes or if you worked part-time while filing. If you can't get through to Washington ESD by phone to check on issues, there's actually a service called Claimyr that helps people get through to agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

What kind of issues would cause adjudication? I was definitely laid off, not quit.

0 coins

Even with layoffs, sometimes employers dispute the reason or there might be questions about your availability for work. It's not always your fault when claims get delayed in adjudication.

0 coins

I've heard about Claimyr but never tried it. Does it actually work for getting through to Washington ESD?

0 coins

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been trying to get through to someone at Washington ESD for THREE WEEKS and the phone just hangs up on me every time. How are we supposed to get help when they won't even answer the phone??

0 coins

I feel your frustration. The call volume is insane and their system can't handle it.

0 coins

This is exactly why services like Claimyr exist - they handle the calling frustration for you and get you connected to actual agents.

0 coins

At this point I'm willing to try anything. I'll check out that Claimyr thing.

For the original poster - here's the step by step process: 1) File initial claim online through SAW, 2) Wait for determination letter with your benefit amount, 3) File weekly claims every week, 4) Complete job search activities and keep records, 5) Report any work or income on weekly claims. Most people start receiving payments 2-3 weeks after filing if there are no issues.

0 coins

This is super helpful! What if I get a part-time job while collecting? Do I have to report that?

0 coins

Yes, always report any work and earnings on your weekly claim. You might still be eligible for partial benefits depending on how much you earn.

0 coins

just wanted to add that you should set up direct deposit right away. getting paper checks takes forever and they get lost in the mail sometimes. also make sure your address is correct in the system

0 coins

Good point about direct deposit. Where do I set that up?

0 coins

you can do it online in your eServices account or there should be a form they send you

0 coins

One more thing - if your claim gets denied or you disagree with a decision, you can appeal within 30 days. Don't just give up if something seems wrong. The appeals process exists for a reason and lots of initial denials get overturned.

0 coins

How would I know if I need to appeal something?

0 coins

You'll get determination letters explaining any decisions. If you disagree with the reason for denial or the benefit amount, that's when you'd want to appeal.

I actually used Claimyr a few months ago when my claim was stuck in adjudication. Honestly wasn't sure if it would work but they got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. Way better than spending hours calling myself. The agent was able to explain exactly what was holding up my claim.

0 coins

That sounds amazing compared to trying to call myself. How does their service work exactly?

0 coins

You just give them your info and they handle all the calling and waiting. When they get an agent on the line, they connect you. Super simple and saved me so much frustration.

0 coins

make sure you keep copies of everything - your initial application, weekly claims, job search records, any correspondence from washington esd. if there are ever issues you'll need those documents

0 coins

Should I print everything out or are digital copies okay?

0 coins

digital is fine as long as you back it up somewhere safe. i keep screenshots of all my weekly claims just in case

0 coins

The job search requirement is no joke - they do audit people and if you can't prove you did your 3 contacts per week, they'll make you pay back benefits. Keep detailed records with dates, company names, and how you contacted them.

0 coins

Yikes, I didn't realize they actually check up on that. I'll make sure to keep good records.

0 coins

It's not super common but it happens. Better safe than sorry when it comes to job search documentation.

0 coins

Does anyone know if you can collect unemployment if you were working as an independent contractor? I did some gig work before my restaurant job and I'm not sure if that affects anything.

0 coins

Independent contractor work usually doesn't count toward your base period wages since no unemployment taxes were paid on that income. It's your W-2 employment that matters for eligibility.

0 coins

Got it, thanks for clarifying that.

0 coins

timing is important too - there's a specific base period they use to calculate your benefits. it's usually the first four of the last five completed quarters before you file. so if you just started working recently you might not have enough wages to qualify

0 coins

I've been working for about 8 months, hopefully that's enough?

0 coins

should be fine as long as you earned enough in covered employment. the system will tell you when you file your claim

0 coins

Just want to echo what others said about Claimyr - I was skeptical at first but when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD for over a week, I tried their service. Worth every penny to actually talk to someone who could help with my claim status.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost though?

0 coins

I'd rather not get into specific costs but for me it was worth it to avoid the endless calling and busy signals. Check their website for current pricing.

0 coins

also remember that unemployment benefits are taxable income so you might want to have taxes withheld or set money aside for tax time. you can request withholding when you file your weekly claims

0 coins

I hadn't thought about taxes - thanks for mentioning that!

0 coins

yeah it's easy to forget but you don't want a surprise tax bill later

0 coins

The restaurant industry can be tricky for unemployment because of tip reporting and varying hours. Make sure Washington ESD has accurate information about your total earnings including tips if you reported them on your taxes.

0 coins

Good point about tips. I did report them so hopefully that helps with my benefit amount.

0 coins

It should - every dollar of reported wages helps determine your weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

Don't forget about the waiting week - even if your claim is approved right away, there's usually a one-week waiting period before you start receiving payments. Plan your finances accordingly.

0 coins

So even if everything goes smoothly, it's at least 2-3 weeks before I see any money?

0 coins

Pretty much, yeah. That's why it's important to file as soon as possible after your last day of work.

0 coins

been through this process twice and the key is just staying on top of everything. file your weekly claims on time, do your job searches, report any income honestly. if you follow the rules it usually works out fine

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the advice! I feel much more confident about starting this process now.

0 coins

good luck! hope everything goes smoothly for you

0 coins

Last tip - if you have any issues or questions that can't wait for the phone lines, sometimes the local WorkSource offices can help with basic unemployment questions. Not everything, but they might be able to point you in the right direction.

0 coins

That's good to know there are other options besides just calling Washington ESD directly.

0 coins

Though honestly, for anything complicated with your actual claim, you really need to talk to Washington ESD directly. That's where Claimyr becomes really valuable.
