How to claim unemployment benefits - Washington ESD process confusing me
I just got laid off from my restaurant job last week and I'm totally lost on how to file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD. I've been working for 2 years but never had to deal with this before. I went to the website but there's so much information and I don't know where to start. Do I need to create an account first? What documents do I need? How long does it take to get approved? I'm really stressed about paying rent next month and could use some guidance from anyone who's been through this process.

Start by going to esd.wa.gov and creating your SecureAccess Washington (SAW) account if you don't have one already. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation. The initial application takes about 30-45 minutes to complete thoroughly.

•Thanks! Do I need pay stubs or just the basic info about where I worked?

Chloe Green
•Just the basic employment info for the application. Washington ESD will verify wages with your employers directly through their records.

Make sure you apply as soon as possible because there's a waiting week before benefits start. I made the mistake of waiting two weeks thinking I'd find another job quickly and it just delayed everything.

•Oh no, I already waited a week! Should I file today then?

Lucas Adams
•Yes definitely file today! The sooner the better.

The whole process was pretty straightforward for me but getting through to someone at Washington ESD when I had questions was nearly impossible. I tried calling dozens of times and either got busy signals or got disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. If you run into issues, there's a service called Claimyr that helped me get through - check out claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does that service cost? I'm already strapped for cash.

•It's worth it when you consider how much time and frustration it saves trying to reach Washington ESD on your own. Much better than spending entire days redialing.

After you submit your initial application, you'll need to file weekly claims every week to continue receiving benefits. Don't forget to do this even if your claim is still pending - you can backdate but it's easier to stay current.

•What happens in the weekly claims? Do I have to prove I'm looking for work?
0 coins
Avery Flores
•Yes, you'll need to report any work you did that week, any money earned, and job search activities. Keep a log of where you apply.

•The job search requirement is 3 activities per week minimum. Applications, networking, interviews all count.

ugh the washington esd website is so confusing!! i tried to start my application yesterday and got stuck on the part about my last employer. they went out of business so i dont have all their info

•If your employer went out of business, just put down what information you have. Washington ESD can work with incomplete employer info in those situations.

•ok thank you! i was worried id get denied for not having everything

Quick update: I started the application and it's asking about my 'base period' - what does that mean exactly?

Chloe Green
•Your base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed. So if you filed in January 2025, your base period would be January 2024 through December 2024.

•That makes sense, thanks for explaining it simply!

Be prepared for your claim to possibly go into adjudication if there are any questions about your separation. Mine took 3 weeks to resolve because my employer contested it initially.

Logan Scott
•What's adjudication? That sounds scary.

Alexis Robinson
•It's just when Washington ESD needs to investigate something about your claim before approving it. Common for contested separations or if there's missing information.

•I had the same thing happen. Took forever to get through to explain my side. Ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and finally got to talk to an adjudicator.

Don't panic if your claim shows pending for a while. The system is usually backlogged and it can take 2-3 weeks for processing even without issues.

•How will I know when it's approved? Do they email or call?

Chloe Mitchell
•You'll get a determination letter in your online account and they'll mail a copy too. Check your account regularly.

Pro tip: when you're doing your weekly claims, make sure you answer the questions exactly as they're asked. I accidentally marked that I was unavailable for work one week when I meant I didn't work, and it flagged my whole claim.

•Yeah those questions are tricky! 'Able and available' doesn't mean the same thing as just being unemployed.

Michael Adams
•Exactly! You have to be ready and willing to accept suitable work immediately.

I'm going through this process right now too and it's so stressful! The worst part is not knowing how long everything will take. At least we're all figuring it out together.

•Right? I feel better knowing I'm not the only one who finds this confusing.

•Same here, just got laid off from retail. We should update each other on how our claims go!

Make sure you understand the difference between regular UI and standby status if you think you might be recalled to your job. Standby has different requirements.

Logan Scott
•My manager said they might reopen in a few months but nothing definite. Should I apply for standby?
0 coins
Ryan Young
•If there's no definite recall date, regular UI is probably better. Standby is more restrictive about job search requirements.

The Washington ESD customer service is absolutely terrible. I've been trying to get through for weeks about an issue with my claim. Finally broke down and tried that Claimyr thing and got connected to someone the same day. Wish I'd known about it sooner.

•How does Claimyr work exactly? Do they just call for you?
0 coins
Sophia Clark
•They handle the calling and waiting on hold, then connect you when they get through to an agent. Saves you from sitting on hold for hours.

Don't forget you'll need to register with WorkSource too for the job search requirement. That's a separate system from your unemployment claim.

Logan Scott
•Another website to deal with? This is getting overwhelming.

Madison Allen
•I know it seems like a lot but once you get everything set up it becomes routine. The WorkSource registration is pretty quick.

Been collecting UI for 2 months now and the key is staying organized. Keep copies of everything - your application, weekly claims, job search log, any correspondence. You never know when you'll need to reference something.

•Good advice! Should I print everything out or is digital okay?

Joshua Wood
•Digital is fine as long as you back it up. I keep screenshots of my weekly claims in case there are ever questions.

One thing that helped me was calling the Washington ESD automated line first to check my claim status before trying to reach a person. Sometimes you can get the info you need without waiting on hold.

Logan Scott
•What's the automated line number?

Justin Evans
•It's the same main number but you can navigate through the menu options for automated services.

Just want to say thanks to everyone sharing their experiences. This thread has been more helpful than anything I found on the official Washington ESD website!

•Agreed! I feel so much more confident about starting my application now.
